How I make a sinamay bias brim using the power of steam and invisible stitches. Watch how a hat maker applies vintage styling to a modern sustainable sinamay material. Did you know it comes from a banana tree?
There are many ways how to make sinamay bias brims - just remember, this is my preferred method, there is no right or wrong way, just whatever works for you 😊

favourite2023 The rotation of the sinamay for the fascinator base is EXTREMELY useful! I am starting with already made fascinators, but when I get some experience, this will be helpful when I make my own. The elastic attachment hints are also useful, as I don't want to use combs and I find headbands cause me headaches.

Hi Ilona! Very cool instructions video. Thank you! ❤️ I have a question though. When you are ironing sinamay, it's melting together cause of the stiffner. Have you prestiffen it yourself or you got it that way already? And if not treated with stiffner by manufacturer, will this work if I use diluted PVA before, let it dry as plain fabric and then cut, fold steam and iron?

Can you make a 50's style half hat from Sinamay? Very interesting to watch.

Hello Helga! yes of course you can! You can treat it in a similar way to buckram or straw - I have videos on how to block with these here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z8dgZbKHlb6bhpc.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iuBmjaZ_1a_DkXk.html As I said at the beginning of this video though, keep in mind that it is not an accurate material to the 50s, as it was only beginning to be used in hats in the 80s and 90s, so it will not be "historically accurate" 😅 But you can certainly emulate the styles. I plan to working a little more with sinamay soon, so I hope you join me for that! ❤ 😊

This has been pointed out to me 🤣 if only the captions were true 😂 in my newer videos I am trying to provide proper captions rather than relying on KZfaq's auto caption 😊

What fabrics do you use for a hat making other than sinamay ?
@ByIlonaMillinery
@ByIlonaMillinery Жыл бұрын
Hello Sandra! Thank you for your question 😊 I would call sinamay a "foundation material" rather than a fabric, as it is very stiff and its use is structural. As for fabrics, you can use anything and only your imagination is the limit. I tend to use silk dupion and silk velvet when I make fabric covered hats. I suggest you don't use polyester because it does not lend itself to draping well (and is a polluting plastic) If you are interested in fabric covered hats I suggest this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gJuUaLqVq620hJs.html OR if you want to learn more about millinery foundation materials, then I've got this video here on working with buckram: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z8dgZbKHlb6bhpc.html Another traditional millinery material is felt, I have a video here on using wool felt: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jNCAY9Vy0tKakp8.html I hope you enjoy these videos!
