Million Dollar Highway, Sights and History

The Million Dollar Highway runs 24 miles between Silverton and Ouray, Colorado. It reaches an elevation of 11,000 feet over Red Mountain Pass.

The million dollar hiway got its name because they used the tailing pile from the mines in the area as it's road base. They figured that in the tailings had silver left in them that amounted to a million dollars per mile. This is from a 63 year old Colorado native.

I've heard all your tales from other oldies, on paper it was because of the cost per mile at the time of a certain Denver news papers printing...believe me I've refined those so called road tailings. Also just to pay you back for trying to shed light, there is still one private active GOLD mine just past bear creak falls or as the local 1950 locals would say, ottos tol road.

How was it? On the game I mean. I drove this pass close to 500 time (457x as of this post) This video is of the Silverton side, I've only ever almost died on the Ouray side.

D’oh! I’ve been over Wolf Creek Pass several times and somehow I missed that. One of My sources said that this was the only snow shed in Colorado. Thanks!
