If you watch the video, the exhaust was hitting the side of the fuel can. Too close for my comfort.

Allen reminds me so much of my sadly late father in law. He was an engineer, apprenticed in the RAF in the forties..he worked on Spiftires, the Red Arrows and so on. For many years he laboured to maintain the various cars my wife and I bought while I passed him spanners and watched in disbelief. On countless occasions he would fix things I thought were beyond repair. No special tool? Make one. Part not in stock? Create one from scratch. Its a joy to see the creative mind at work like this.

Capcatrei as an airplane mechanic, I know that if this guy used the same kind of crank shaft setup as a radial engine that v twin would shake itself to prices in short order, much like a certain popular motorcycle company’s engines did untill the 90’s or so.😂. On an engine like that an odd cylinder is needed to cancel out the worst of the vibrations.

So, to sum up, it isn’t practical. Big surprise. Most of the more interesting and enjoyable things, aren’t. It’s already in a frame and performing, sans the “odd” cylinder. I would think the more befuddling aspect of all this is that it can actually be kick-started, by a _human_ !

Two cylinders off a Wright R1300 (a 7 cylinder radial) would be 6086cc... even better still! But the Wright R1300 (or R2600 14cyl brother) is probably as rare as hen's teeth.

I would say those jugs are off a Pratt and Whitney R1340, a 9 cyl radial of 1340 cu ins. 1340÷9×2 = 298 cu ins.

Yep. Basically, a 302 stuffed into two cylinders. I can't believe that 2 plugs per cylinder are all that is required to get an even burn. Wow.

@@fohdmoco I get what you're saying, Zack. But when you consider the surface area above a 2.5-liter piston, to get an even burn with only two plugs, it is rather surprising. That is what I was referring to. To my way of thinking, the 5-liter twin system might be better served with three plugs per cylinder, but far be it from me to insist on this. Regardless, a radially-configured (airplane) engine, (from which an HD V-Twin is a "slice") there are typically 5-9 concentric cylinders sharing a complex crank so, generally speaking, more than one cylinder would have to fail to actually bring a plane down. It would just sound like a motor with a hellacious skip, but shouldn't really be a problem to land. Thus, I believe the dual-plug configuration was designed to assure even burn across the surface of each piston/combustion chamber, (which on airplane engines were/are quite large) as both plugs, if/when there were two, likely fired off the same set of contact points and would fail in unison, anyway. I could be wrong, as I worked this out in my head rather than actually look anything up, which has, at times, ended embarrassingly for me. But I'm what you would call a "risk-taker." ;-)

Maekong Mike Aircraft engines have two of everything (fuel pump, oil pump, magneto, spark plugs, etc.), each perfectly capable of running the engine as designed individually, for redundancy in case of a part failure, so that the engine will still run properly until it can land and have the part replaced. One plug will do the job. Some of those crazy big old Rolls Royce aviation engines had even bigger cylinders and were built the same way. Compressed gasoline vapor burns fast, and these were low-rpm engines in an era when no one gave a tinker's damn about efficiency or emissions, one plug is plenty so long as it sparks.

Those beautiful sensual aircraft heads and cylinders....I I've dreamed about someone (me), building such an engine ever since I calculated displacement of two of those radial cyls and a modest stroke! Alas, I become disabled and...well too much info! Still I am enthralled to see you have built my dream. Massively fantastic!

That's what I was thinking. Aircraft engine, high compression, reduced cooling capability, atmospheric density at ground level; all of these things surely contribute to some high heat!

Convection around cooling fins is often enough at idle and low speed, low load conditions to keep air cooled engines happy.

Well, you start at the age of 2 yrs.; making engine sounds with your Tonka trucks in the sandbox ... and it just kind of takes its own course from there. Eventually, you find yourself playing in your own Garage / Machine Shop ... and you build whatever crazy idea comes to mind. 😉

+Don Hill The creator claims he used R-1340 cylinder heads, but they're way too big and don't match the cooling fin pattern or layout of R-1340 cylinder heads. I think they're R-1830 cylinder heads as they closer match the size and the cooling fin patterns and the painting scheme. Take a look and compare: R-1430: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Pratt_and_Whitney_Wasp.jpg R-1830: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:R-1830_IWM.JPG If we do calculations based on an R-1830, this engine could put out anywhere from 114 HP to 192 HP depending on the compression ratio and timing. I think it'd make a great dune buggy engine, it'd be a bit scary in a motorcycle from the crazy torque.
