Milwaukee Demo Gloves and Impact Demolition Gloves
www.toolboxbuzz.com/safety-wo...
5 Years ago I was working in my yard
and decided to cut up an old lacrosse goal and toss it in my dumpster.
While holding the vertical pipe with my left hand and cutting the upper horizontal pipe with my right something happened….
the overhead weight of the recip saw must have caused me to lower the saw just enough ...
for the recip blade to exit the pipe kerf and the blade "hit" the pipe.
That punching action caused the recip saw to come back at me, and also drop!
While dropping, the blade “punched” my left hand once, puncturing and severed my thumb tendon. I was out of work a month, worked one-handed for another month and PT lasted at least 3 months….. it took awhile to come back to 100%
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 1 million workers go to the emergency room each year because of serious hand injuries.
Like me, the vast majority of those injured were not wearing gloves.
The #1 (63%) listed injury for hands is from lacerations - like mine. After this my injury I did NOT start wearing gloves. But after reviewing the Milwaukee Demo gloves on my remodeling projects - Im now looking at gloves differently.
There are two styles of work gloves that I tested out including: The regular Demolition gloves - came out in 2016 and the Impact Demolition gloves were introduced in late 2019.
I've never been a glove guy, except in cold weather, when I only wore gloves to keep my hands warm.I wore theses Demo gloves on a recent two-month gut / remodel project to see how they felt. Wearing them every day.
There are things I like and dislike but either way, I'm SOLD on these gloves. I don't think I'll do any demo or framing again without them. . . Why? No more splinters, cuts, busted up knuckles, and my hands and fingernails are way cleaner at the end of the day. I use to pride myself in having rough working hands, but the reality was I was constantly living with micro-cuts,
festering splinters, and tears all in various stages of healing. My hands - were sore more than they weren't.
The Demolition Work Gloves I wore sell for $ 22.00
The gloves have a fingertip, palm and thumb grip material that grip well and a fabric material on the backside that is breathable. I found my hand never got hot.Milwaukee uses a material called Armortex to reinforce the PALM grip material. Armortex is a specially selected fabric, that includes Kevlar thread, [like whats used in ballistic vests] This fabric yields high tensile strength and superb surface resistance performance.
Since we're talking about the grip material, the grippy palm area is padded. A knuckle protection pad provides ultimate knuckle protection from scrapes and impact without limiting movement. This is an area that is constantly getting banged up, especially when performing demo, or rebuilding and sistering floor joists or rafters.
The Impact Demolition Work Gloves look like an heavily-armored version of the gloves I wore or to put it another way - gloves on steroids!! They sell for $29.00. The impact demolition gloves are set up similar, only with much thicker padding in the grip area.
I would not wear these daily, but if your doing masonry you might. I kinda wish I was wearing these the day I had my accident. The outer hand over-mold rubber protection on these gloved has a larger coverage area that extends across and protects the metacarpal ligaments. Additional rubber strips extend the outer length of each finger and thumb. This glove has WAY more robust protection.
As a remodeling contractor, I'm working in the field, but also constantly fielding phone calls, from clients and other trades-people. I found the velcro wrist strap holding the glove on incredibly annoying, every time I tried to peel a glove off to deal with a call or text, I had to fumble with the strap.
The gloves have a feature that Milwaukee calls a Smart Swipe, allowing you to navigate your phone while wearing the gloves. This is a great idea in theory but is useless in the field, and it doesn't work with the iPhone fingerprint unlock.
It literally took one day of constantly dealing with that Velcro strap before I cut it off. Once the strap was gone, I found I could quickly take off or put on the glove to navigate the phone or reach into a pocket. Problem solved! The gloves also designed have a webbing pull-loop so you can easily pull them on or attach them to a tool bag for storage.
Overall - Milwaukee did a real nice job with these gloves. They focused on maneuverability, performance, durability, and protection.

Safety protection like this cant be overlooked.. I had a similar hand injury 4 years ago where I almost lost my left hand completely in a chop saw accident! Had I been wearing gloves like these. I would have saved not only my hand but about a year of my life going through physical therapy... Great video Rob!

Kyle Stencel gloves can actually cause more injury when using any tool with a rotating blade. All it takes is for the material to snag in the tooth of the saw and your whole hand/arm will wrap around it like a piece of bacon

@@FIN4L_BOSS yeah, I wasn't allowed to wear gloves around the saws it was common knowledge where I was at. The table saws needed a saw stop sensing by sending electrical current through the blade and any good conductive contact to it would shut off the blade minimizing injury. These gloves probably should only be used for warmth and demo work only.

When I was in deck division in the Navy we only wore gloves when handling wire lines because the fish hooks could do extreme damage to your hands. The problem with gloves was that they removed the tactile sense that was needed to feel the line moving through your fingers. If you weren't aware the line was moving, you could find yourself over the side in a heart beat. In itself, going over the side could be bad. But, going overboard between 2 ships that are only 90' apart and doing 12 knots is almost guaranteed to be fatal.

Gloves have come a long way when it comes to tactile feeling. While probably not durable enough for the application you described, some tight fitting nitrile working gloves provide often sufficient tactile feedback.

Ship I was on got Kevlar mooring lines instead of either PolyPro or Nylon/Dacron, all 8-strand hollow-core multiplait. Kevlar was expensive but considerably lighter (we used 3" and 4" diameter lines) and were stronger, so we could use thinner lines. Had to abandon them because they had no wear life to abrasion - going through the chocks or around the bollards to slow the ship, then keep it moored, they wore out. They were too slippery and we needed non-slick to grip the bollards. You say these gloves have wear resistance. In the past, on construction sites, I've had a tendency to wear glove too worn for safety. Wire rope is one thing - you NEED these. I'd cut off the securing strap for that. There is a dispute over handing fiber-lines. Some maritime employers forbid gloves for that (including the navy), some don't. Even leather or cloth glove will catch on fiber lines and pull your hand into danger. I don't miss handling lines, except for the challenge. One ship had 9" lines for winter. In the rain, talk about heavy! Nothing like a frozen line, either. Good video.

I’ve had multiple pairs of each of these gloves and while i love them, man they wear out quick. The “armor” was breaking apart one the first stuff i picked up with these. Other than that they were great and I’ve had many brands over the years. Besides demo i use them moving pretty much anything as it’s just easier on your palms and fingers and getting pinched or cut or splinters. I never demo anything without them.

I wear gloves a lot, big reason is my grip is not what it once was. Also I think more about safety than I did when I was younger. After 40+ years in building and remodeling my hands have taken a beating.

I'm in infrastructure setup and breakdown. These look like the perfect glove to protect my crew👍 Just one tip another viewer commented on. Remove you gloves when using any rotational tools. A week back my left glove got taken up by my small cordless bosch drill almost leading to a twisted snapped thumb. Never considred the danger and if it was a higher powered drill i think the result would be have been catastrophic. Be warned and stay safe.

I'm not really a glove guy either but for demo, it's a must. I did the same thing to my hand last fall with a hatchet. I was wearing the cheap black harbor freight glove and yes it went through. I sharpened the hatchet shaving sharp didn't help. I have all sorts of gloves. Lately I've been using Stihl mesh back gloves since I picked up an MS261 a few weeks ago. Love them and the goat skin feels nice. I think best bargain would be the red harbor freight gloves. They last pretty long and much more robust than the black ones. When you go through as many gloves as I do, its hard to spend $25-$30 a pop. We'll see how long these Stihl gloves last.

So, as the person responsible for safety of employees and subs on commercial jobsites I often kept gloves on the jobsite but never enforced wearing them. As the years went on and I had to be responsible for injuries and blood around more workers I changed my view. By the way, do not wear gloves (at least on your off hand) when using rotating power tools like drills.

Rob I've been wearing them for years. They are great. They remind me of the original high end work gloves, ironclad. I wore those for years. Husky makes good gloves also. Maybe consider doing a comparison test between all the high end gloves? Also there are many other types of gloves. The butyl rubber gloves. I like Milwaukee light weight butyl for light tasks. They give protection and excellent grip.

I didn't think to remove the Velcro strap. That's a a really good idea. It is the worst part of them. I think These should be used for demo work almost exclusively. Or just with any hand tool work sheet metal work. They can be a safety hazard doing certain tasks like using saws. The material can get caught on a power tool's rotation or material can get embedded inside the injury and have to be removed at the doctors/hospital.

Dewalt have the same kind of gloves with padded palm and fingers and they are great they are thick so don't try holding pins or nails you will drop them but they can't come off your hand easy because they have a valcro strap I like that but I will never use a drill impact driver or a hammer without them because they have vibration reduction money well spent in my oppion in the winter they are warm in the summer I use the thinner kind of gloves they are good

Safety glasses, masks, gloves, hearing protection. Used to be thought of as protection from a major "event" like the recip v. Robs thumb. Long term wear and tear over your working life can destroy the quality of daily life long after you stop working. A few bucks to buy and a few seconds to put on so you can work hard and retire well.

I've been wearing woven sythetic palm dipped gloves for a few years now. They last a lot longer than leather or stiched synthetic gloves. But this is a complicated issue and id like to see some testing done rather than anecdotal observations. I read something ages ago that safety rating had to be changed in europe when cut resistent polymers came onto the market. Any interest in the channel setting up some testing to compare glove types? Or does anyone know of anywhere i could look this up.

@@ConcordCarpenter it ranges between 30 and 60+ depending on features of the glove. They last 1-3 months depends on the season for me. Once it warms and we do 3 service lines a day they degrade faster. But if I'm working on Main line which is more machine work they will last for a bit. I keep 4 pairs in my truck and rotate they get soaked with sweat pretty fast

These work gloves don't last for shit. I don't care what brand they are. They can put all the protective material they want on, the thing that goes first is the stitching around the finger tips when your grabbing and moving stuff. Once you get a finger blow out they're done. You cant have dexterity and durability together. You sacrifice dexterity for a glove that'll last, and it makes working with tools horrible, or you get a good fitting flexible glove with some protection and it doesnt last.

If your gloves only last a week or two then your not using the right gloves for the job ....I got some leather palmed mechanix impacts that have lasted for months on some job types and would only last a week in others ....point is use the right gloves type for fucks sake and if your job still tears up gloves like that then maybe you should make your boss or company provide you compensation to pay for having to constantly burn through them .......common sense
