Pneumatic Ratchet Replacement - Milwaukee has made M12 Ratchets since 2011, but with the introduction of the Milwaukee M12 FUEL Ratchets, they now offer the power and size to replace pneumatic ratchets. There is no doubt, our favorite tool in the Milwaukee M12 line is the ratchets, they are now improved for more torque, longer runtime and longer motor life. The largest model, the 1/2" ratchet delivers 60ft-lbs of torque!
Milwaukee Tool has always said they are striving for the cordless jobsite. In this case, with no hoses, compressors, or cords, mechanics can enjoy the freedom to work where they please with solid powerful tools. These ratchets are very balanced and have a very compact head design to access more limited space applications. Ever looked under the hood of your new car. There is not much room in the engine compartment anymore! Each ratchet has a rubber over-mold to withstand corrosive materials and provide comfort when in use.
Noticeable Difference - We use our Milwaukee M12 ratchets daily and there is no doubt there is a significant power increase in the FUEL models. That does not mean that the old ratchets are bad as we enjoy them very much. The power difference will mean that the new FUEL models will break many more of the nuts or bolts loose on its own power rather than us doing it manually before the using the power of the tool. The amount of metal and the overall construction seems a lot beefier on the new FUEL model. If you were to pick up a standard model and a new FUEL model, you will notice a fair weight difference. That tells us the construction materials are a bit better in the new models.
Milwaukee states that the new FUEL models will fit into tighter places, and in some cases, they will. we have to say that overall, the head and the tool, in general, is slightly larger than the older model. How this would impact someone would be purely dependant on the situation. Overall, we believe that these will still get into similarly tight areas and work very well.
Must-Have Tools! - If you do not already have a set M12 ratchets, we highly suggest you try them out. No matter if you are working on a car or assembling a new tool, these tools are worth their weight in gold. Thier ability to speed up a job and take some repetitive movement away from your forearms is amazing. Now with more power, they will be able to work better without a small help to bust the nut or bolt loose.
If you are a mechanic, the new 1/2" model will be appealing for the power and its ability to fit into tight areas in the engine bay. The new FUEL ratchets compliment other M18 and M12 impact wrenches! The M12 line is a large platform and Milwaukee is proving that they will continue to further develop the line as new tools keep coming.

Nice review! I have both Fuel and standard on the 3/8" models and the old model I was underwhelmed on the power, but was disappointed on the size increase of the fuel model, so now I have both and pick the one I need depending on the job, if space isn't an issue I grab the fuel, if I need a smaller footprint I go with the old model.

I have the old ones. They’re some of my most used tools. I do have the new 3/8” one ordered, but I’m rethinking it based on this video as the new one looks significantly larger. The additional power isn’t a big deal either because they aren’t meant to break or tighten a bolt. You still do that by hand. They just make getting the bolt on and off faster, which they do amazingly.
@WorkshopAddict
@WorkshopAddict 6 жыл бұрын
Just throwing this out there, maybe just buy the 1/2" model and use it for the extra power. There is not much of a size difference between the new 1/2" and new 3/8", and the smaller 1/2" sockets work and fit in the same space as the 3/8". Glad we could help you out!

WorkshopAddict If there’s one thing I could possibly ding the brushless versions on, it was that when you did have to hand torque for breaking a bolt, there’d be some flex to the body and battery. How’s the new versions in that instance? Thanks!

roguegeek We have not noticed that in our old models and we do not see it in the new models. The new models are built to be stronger in that sense for sure.

I looked at the new ratchets today and they definitely have a better feel. I am sticking with my old 3/8, because I don't use it that often, but if I were a mechanic, I would upgrade, because these are nice ratchets now. I suppose what I mean is the old ones were super handy if you were in the m12 line, but you weren't buying into the m12 line because you just had to have the ratchet. The new ones are really very nice, and I think they are a true competitor now. I might get the 1/2 inch because I don't have one yet...

I was at HD today and checked out the new 3/8 brushless ratchet. It definitely looks strong. I think it might be too heavy for me to use all day. It is also a lot bulkier than their previous model. the bulk probably wouldn’t be a factor if you were not working under the hood. If I were using this on an engine on a stand, I might try to rig up some kind of tool balancer like my pneumatic drivers. Milwaukee might even come out with a setup in red.😁

I have been using the 2557 everyday for the last to weeks. The battery may last a week at home but at work it cant even get through the day. Once I knock two bars off the battery a power loss is noticeable. I ordered a 6 amp battery to see if that will improve how long it can go before needing to recharge. Other than that no real complaints. The ratchet is bigger than the first gen but I haven't found that to be a issue yet. They really need to make these so that you can grease the heads like on the Snap On 14.4 ratchets. I also did not hear you mention that the 2557 square drive stops when you let off the trigger where the first gen kept spinning, sort of a brake.

I bought the 1/2 inch one today from Craig's list at a good price. I would have preferred the 3/8 one because as a few users have said theres really not much need for the 1/2 inch if they can both handle a claimed 60 foot lbs equally. I paid 100 dollars for a brand new fuel one and don't really care because I have a 1/2 inch and 3/8 set with adapters for vise versa. Next purchase will probably be the 3/8 compact impact wrench. The guy who sold me the ratchet said he had the 3/8 version at home and wanted to keep It lol..

They seem pretty nice but I think it’s fare to say that most auto techs would rather the smaller (older) style because of how small it is. That’s was a huge factor in buying Milwaukee over the Snap On and Matco counterparts. Maybe I just love me old 3/8 too much lol
@WorkshopAddict
@WorkshopAddict 6 жыл бұрын
The 1/4" model has more power than the old 3/8" and it is about the same size as the old 3/8", so that is nice. that is all you need in 1/4" drive and it will handle a lot of what your 3/8" will. I fully agree, the size of them is a bit larger, but at the same point, you can tell the quality difference. Hard to say. We wont be getting rid of our old models, but will use the helk out of our new models.

yea i never under stood the 1/2 in pneumatic or electric ratchet. 3/8 is my go to and i can get alot with that. if its too tight out comes the breaker bar and then back to the power tools when its broken loose. 1/2 in sockets are too big to fit in a lot of places as well.

You won't get even close to 60ft lbs with the half inch model. I've got the 3/8 model and it only outputs 30 ft lbs of tq in forward and about 35-45 in reverse. Wouldn't take off a 1/2" bolt torqued to 50 ft lbs.

Adding an adapter to the 1/2" might make it useless in certain situations when it is tight. But i have found that my short and deep well 1/2" are working the same as my 3/8" in most areas. The reason why I am trying this is because i believe most could buy the 1/4" and the 1/2" and have a tools that would work for everything they need. titan371 Look at your sockets and compare the sizes you have in 1/2" and in 3/8" and compare the sizes. If you are buying just one, I would go with the 3/8". If you are buying two, I would do 1/4" and 1/2". But again, in my situation, I think I could get by with just the 1/2", but I have a boat load of sockets from the last 30 years of wrenching.

you guys know if it is possible that you can remove car seats and seat belt screws?
@WorkshopAddict
@WorkshopAddict 5 жыл бұрын
Rear car seats are no issue, but many seat belt bolts are very tight. You would have to break them loose before using this.

I have a 3/8 chrome socket set already. Do I have to buy a impact socket to use with them? Or will my chrome be good enough
@brycelund7155
@brycelund7155 4 жыл бұрын
BtownOG You don’t “need” impact sockets even if you do use them on an impact. The difference between the two is chrome sockets are made from chrome-vanadium vs impact sockets which are made (most of the time) out of chrome-molybdenum. Chrome moly is just a bit stronger so they can hold up on an impact. Chrome sockets are just more likely to crack when used on an impact, but still can be. You definitely do not need to buy a new set of impact sockets to use with this ratchet. I would recommend getting impact sockets if you are going to be upgrading to a high torque impact.

Do they need to be lubricated? If so what do y’all recommend
@WorkshopAddict
@WorkshopAddict 5 жыл бұрын
They do not, but in our case they are always full of grease and oil, so ours get a bath in 15W40 pretty often. I would use a clean diesel oil to soak them and clean them. Diesel oil has a lot of cleaners and will help with lube.

I love milwaukee, but making the head on the ratchet bigger dosent help in tight places.... I understand they are trying to beef it up but better quality metal over a large head would b a great.. improvement... still gonna buy new model cuz it as powerful as or stronger than snapon for 1/3 the cost ...

I have the old style, and honestly I'm gonna hang on to them as long as possible because the 3/8 and 1/4 ratchet heads are the exact same size. With the work I have to do I need a tool as small as possible. I'll buy the fuel when only if I can't find a replacement that is the old style.

4:00 They all use the same M12 battery system, it's a little bit confusing what you're saying at this point in the video...you should have just said the 3/8's have an extended life M12 battery on them, and that's why they look bigger.

The previous model's head was made of hardened steel, the new model is not, which is why it us so bulky and far larger. Run a file over ieach, you'll hear a hard scraping screech sound on the previous model and this new one will barely make a sound.

These are cool. But not nearly enough power for what I need in AG working on heavy equipment. Besides there's not very many spots I can't get a impact with a universal socket into. Now the m18 1/2" fuel might be a different story. We shall see.
