I just took delivery of the new Milwaukee Rear Handle Circular Saw and give you my thoughts on how good is it!! I feel like so many people have been waiting for Milwaukee to make a rear handle circular saw and it is finally here! I was able to test it shortly at Milwaukee's NPS 2019, but that is never the same as using it in your own environment.
The one thing I noticed about the milwaukee rear handle is how smooth it is in and out of materials and how powerful it is. Run time and longevity will be determined as time goes by, but it is definitely good and I am glad that the rear handle is finally here!!
Stay tuned to my Instagram feed @rrbuildings for more info on the saw and my thoughts as I use it on site for framing and other tasks!

Work took me to Fargo, ND this week. So, I couldn't resist a trip to Acme Tools store there. If you're a tool geek like me, it's unbelievable. Tool guy heaven! So much in stock. If you're used to the meager selections at the big box home stores like me, your jaw will drop when you walk in the door. Picked up the rear handle Milwaukee while I was there this morning and had to leave before I spent my next two paychecks! Can't wait to use it. If you have had a similar experience at another tool store somewhere, give us the rundown. I'm chomping at the bit to put this saw through it's paces.

Great test and review. Both seem to be great saws. I own the dewalt and love it. I agree that the paddle safety release could be preferable if it’s required to hold it during the cut. I don’t find the button on my dewalt to be at all awkward though. The most important note being that once you’ve pulled the trigger, you can take your thumb off the safety. You can just hold the trigger and the saw will run until the trigger is released.

I love the thermal overload protection on the Milwaukee batteries, even though it may be an inconvenience at times, it does protect your investment for those apes out there pushing and abusing their tools at times. I'm guilty of that :) Thanks for video review! And nice 4K quality. Excellent!

Great video as always. Glad Milwaukee finally made a blade left 7 1/4. I returned the older style 7 1/4 gen1 and use the 6 1/2 for that reason. Would definitely buy this saw and stay on the platform, but my 6 1/2 has been fine so far. Having the extra depth though is a great thing.

Milwaukee's Red Lithium/Fuel technology is supposed to shut the battery down if the demand is past a certain threshold regardless of temperature. It's protecting the cells from possible damage due to excessive discharge too quickly. Great test and thanks for sharing.

My Skill 77 worm drive is 26 years old. Purchased when I was 32 years old. Used daily and never any maintenance. I love my corded saw. These new cordless saws are costly and battery life and replacement expensive. Not a good investment in my opinion . Way too much plastic also. Glad you find them good for your situation. Them old skill saw's probably did serve you well for the 32 years, but since then the technology of the saw has changed so much. The power, functionality, durability, speed, and convenience of these saws has changed the way construction crews work. Having to no source power on a job site is priceless on it's own. Don't get me wrong my Mag 77 I bought 15 years ago has worked strong, and hard for me. Though I wouldn't pull that thing out now unless my newer cordless saws were broken. Regardless I will never tell a worker what tool he has to use, but every single person that get's their hands on the newer cordless technology never looks back at all. At the end of the day I appreciate the older tech, cause without it we wouldn't have the tools we have today.

I bought the dewalt last year & run time was horrible. Plenty of power for sure but I was swapping batteries more then I was cutting. I have had the first Milwaukee 7 1/4 blade right for 4 years now & that cuts almost to a T on the amp hr for whatever battery I put on it & I have all the sizes . I sold the dewalt rear handle & bought gen 2 Milwaukee that came out last year. That saw has tons of power !! Just to be clear I’m framing all day with these saws cutting everything from 2X material to LVL to stacks of sheeting. My opinion Milwaukee batteries are longer run time by a lot over flex volt . I have plenty of both platforms. Just my opinion. Great video Kyle . Thanks bro 👍🏻🛠

The 6ah FlexVolt isn’t all that but they are cheap and I use them for projects at home or back ups for my 20v tools. The 9ah and 12ah batteries are what you should be using. While obviously you will swap batteries framing all day I have zero complaints about my dcs 570, 575, or 577 dewalts. The Milwaukee’s are nice but the price premium isn’t worth it IMHO. I got all my saws on sale for about 30-50% of list price and batteries about 30-40% of list price. For 12v tools Milwaukee all the way. For 18v tools Milwaukee has a better selection than Dewalt. I like the dewalts lite weight on their impacts and the FlexVolt tools deliver on power. I’m a sparky and sometimes equipment operator. I don’t run my saws like a dedicated carpenter would; however, I’m not a stranger to framing or modifications to structures. If you are just getting into the trades and have zero tools... Milwaukee on sale.

For future reference, the XC6.0 High Output, and then the XC8.0 HO or HD9.0, in that order, would be the next best choice after the HD12.0 HO to run high-powered tools. Regarding the saw stalling on the CP3.0 HO - that battery can only produce 1/3 or less of the current (power) of the HD12.0 HO continuously, primarily due to having 1/3 the number of cells (5 instead of 15) internally, and less heatsink material. The limiting factor for lots of these batteries is heat output, as you saw with the thermal overload warning. You may not feel the heat on the outside of the battery, but the cells inside probably exceeded 80C or 90C (design limit). Over the next 5 or 10 minutes you may feel the packs' outside temperature increase to some fraction of the cell's internal temperature. The glass fiber reinforced nylon pack casing has slightly better thermal conductivity than something like ABS plastic, but significantly lower than the battery metal touching the temperature sensor. Milwaukee decided to stick with 18V, and as you noticed, the saw does "work" on the CP3.0. In a pinch, you could finish up a job on whatever spare batteries you had lying around, which is not the case for the 60V only Dewalt tools (Flexvolt Advantage yada yada). But in order to keep pace with other tool manufacturers, the tool powers had to be increased, which meant increased current, and only the largest batteries put out anywhere near what the big saw motors can use. I was pretty surprised you managed to push the Milwaukee saw as fast as you did without stalling. If you'd treated it like a lower power saw given that you put a lower power battery in it, you may have been able to complete the cut. The High Output batteries are "high output" relative to the original M18 RedLithium battery series, but they do not each put out the _same_ power. All High Output batteries to date use 21700 cells (probably Samsung SDI). The HD12.0 HO uses 15 cells, the XC6.0 HO & XC8.0 HO use 10, and CP3.0 HO uses 5. The XC8.0 HO use a variation of the cell in the XC6.0 HO designed for improved runtime over highest power, and the HD9.0 uses 3 sets of 18650 cells which come out to about the same performance as the XC8.0 HO. Each set of 5 cells gets you around 600-800 Watts peak for short durations, limited by internal temperature. If the saw wants say 1500W to cut at a reasonable speed on a 45 bevel, then a 5 cell battery would be loaded to about 200% rated power and immediately overheats, as you experienced. The 10 cell on the other hand is loaded to about 100% rated power and lasts a while, but pushing any harder also leads to thermal shutdown. On the other hand, that 15 cell battery, with 3x 600W cell banks to get 4Ah capacity per bank, is only operating at 85% rated power and continues to chug along until the low voltage protection kicks in.

Ever seen the Roofus 10 in 1 square? It’s pretty handy & really like it. The Martinez square is nice too. Get the same thing from having the Roofus cuz of price etc....but the tools we use help make us money & if they can also speed up the work, along w/ feeling good in the hand f using them over & over; well worth the money, in my opinion. Just like circ saws. Some ppl would never spend $300-$500 on a Saw, but others do & enjoy using the tool. Nothing wrong with that if you like it, can afford it, & it works for you & gets the job done😉 The only complaints I have w/ Milwaukee circ saw(which are not deal breakers at all for me): there is no stops on bevel adjust, & the sawdust shoot isn’t always ideal.....hoping they make different accessories that can be attached to it to direct flow of dust in different directions, besides the hose attachment they have. Other than those....happy w/ what Milwaukee made(still can’t believe they didn’t do bevel stops....really 😉) & just might replace my corded Skil Circ Saw full time🤔 Great vid, glad I found your channel from watching Essential Craftsman (recommend to me long ago). Yep, it’s not a thermal shutdown, it’s current sensing circuitry. I wonder if they’ve made the over-voltage shutoff so sensitive without accounting for the fact that these are AC not DC like everyone thinks, eventually the circuitry will get fast enough to detect a single cycle and voltage passing below zero etc will need to be considered if they haven’t already.

Great Video. People complain that DeWalt introduced a new battery platform and with Makita you need 2 for some of their tools. But, Milwaukee essentially has 2 battery platforms as well, hidden within the same voltage category. A lot of their new tools require High Output batteries and will not work properly on almost all of their other M18 batteries. With some tools you are limited to 1 or 2 battery choices, both above 200$. Just Saying.

Thermal overload is basically due to how much power your drawing (in this case we will use amps) vs how large the battery is, 3ah vs 12ah. In battery terms it's call the discharge rate, I'm going to guess your high output 3ah battery is 30c rating, might be 20c. The saw is rated around 2400watts, so 20v would be 120amp draw, and divide that by the c discharge rating at 30c would be 4amps, over the 3ah rating, so it is not ideal for the battery and causing max tempature increase. On the 12ah battery, we will say it's 20c for large capactiy but lower draw (the tradeoff with batterys, large draws or long life), and we get 6ah being drawn out of that 12ah battery, so it shouldn't be getting hot. The second part would be the mass of the batteries themselves. The 12ah battery has more mass than the 3ah battery, so the 12ah will be harder to cool, as it also took longer to get hot. As for your last test, it shouldn't have been using the full power draw to do those cuts, so it was likely sliding in under 3ah draw instead of 4ah at the 30c rating.

Thermal overload tolerance lowered maybe due to battery chemistry or design? Batteries can't handle as much heat?

I rock both Platforms but got much more deWalt than Milwaukee. I do own the DeWalt with 9AH and use the Milwaukee with HO 12 AH daily and the only difference is the deWalt feels a tiny bit more power on straight cuts. Both are great saws with tons of power and nearly even feel the same. The DeWalt guard does get caught up much more on 45 cuts than the Milwaukee. Actually, i dont think the Milwaukee has ever got caught up. Great Vid!

I'm impressed by what that little 3AH HO pack could do. The cells in both M18 HO packs are impressive but the 12AH has a huge advantage on constant current ratings over the little 3AH. I don't know exactly what cells are in each but if we're talking Samsung 40T vs 30T, then the 12AH would have ~3x more constant current discharge rating.

@@BRNKoINSANITY Sorry, but you're wrong. The HO packs all contain 21700 cells where the previous packs contain 18650 cells. The 9ah High Demand pack specifically contains 3ah cells which are *probably* Samsung 30Q cells.

Great presentation and review. It's real world relevant. Comes down to "feel," "visibility," and battery options. The Dewalt is definitely louder with a more compact design. I doubt power/blade or whatever makes a difference. These are jobsite tools. Match your batteries and supply to one color (red or yellow). Bottom line- pro-grade, no b/s full disclosure reviewer with a real world layout and badass barn.

Great Vid Kyle! I love my m18 Fuel tools and my flexvolt tools. I like the new milwaukee better already. Just like you said, it's soooo smooth and really easy to see what's going on during the cut. On the subject of the HO cp3.0 battery. What happened was the motor was reaching for more current, and the battery didn't have it to offer. Because the redlink technology and the tool communicate, it shut it down to not over draw the battery or underpower the motor. For light duty you can get by with a couple of cuts on a small battery. But I think in all reality, that saw should never be ran on a 1p pack. I think at least a 2p pack like the HO xc6.0 is the smallest I'd run on the saw for ripping hard material at a long distance. That saw draws some current for sure. The best choice for it in all scenarios is clearly the 3p pack (the HO 12.0hd) but I haven't stalled mine out on the 2p HO xc8.0 either. Hey Thanks for the content man! 👍

Nice review Kyle! First off 70% of my work is done with M12, the best platform out there! And all my cutting is done with M18. I run m12/M18 at work, Makita 18 and adapters to run a few ridgid/Ryobi @ home for woodworking. I've never used blade left, east coast bias I guess. Everyone says having multiple brands isn't a big deal, financially however it is for batteries and chargers. Since I buy my own as an employee. On to these saws. I've picked up the makita 100's of times at stores and it is very heavy, compared to blade right. Almost all of my cuts are hidden inside posts, or side channels (think viny U channels). For ripping my gen 1 Fuel 7 1/4 has the best markings for finger rips. It's brighter then the typical dull magnesium slash marks, that you need to do mental math to know what they mean. I do love the led, even though I thought it a gimmick when they came out for low lighted areas. Regarding the paddle safety, vs push button. I'm always trying for a scratch free cut, (powdercoated aluminum/extruded vinyl get scratches when cutting on a flat surface), so I'm always cutting with extreme end on the ground. Maybe because I have small hands, but the paddle always makes me contort my saw hand, or ^? I own and have tried the subcompact, and regular 6.5 Makita saws for my job. Fence and handrails can be thin vinyl (harmonics of both Makita's shatter on every rip), vinyl with aluminum inside, aluminum only, wood, and vinyl with wood inside. For steel I do love my Makita 5 7/8 saw! In the end your unique job, will determine your battery platform, which influences which saw you will pick. I think I'm right in saying a 12 ahr is roughly 8x the storage of a 3ahr, it's not as simple as dividing.. Although 60amp is a different level. I've thermaled every M18 battery I've had, but have not had to replace any in 4 years. Thanks again stomping horses!

Watching your hands, it looks like you are much more comfortable with the Milwaukee, especially in the miter and plywood rip. The Milwaukee pulls power out of the small battery faster than it is designed to put out so it overheats. The extra cells in the big battery, some in parallel, some in series, means no cell gets overworked. Cross cutting 2x's with the 3ah battery is probably good.

Kyle, the 18 volt verses 20 volt battery is marketing hype. The nominal voltage of the internal cells is either 3.6 volts. Milwaukee uses nominal voltage, De Walt uses charged voltage. 10 cells wired 5P or parallel in a 2S or series configuration gives you 18 volts, which is how Milwaukee rates their battery packs. De Walt uses charged voltage of 4.2 volts per cell, or actually 21 volts. If you take a multimeter and check the voltage on the De Walt and the Milwaukee battery pack, you'll get the same voltage results.

The 12.0 is 15 cells. Which is 5s3p. It's 5s2p for 4.0/5.0 XC and 6.0/8.0 HO SAV-PAC. Series Adds Voltage. Parallel adds current. So 3.6V x 5s = 18v.
