Look back video on the Milwaukee Gen 1 and Gen 2 Recip Saws
Do you remember your first cordless reciprocating saw?
We've all had our FAVS over the years - early on my favorite corded reciprocating saw
was the Porter-Cable Tiger-Saw - what a beast!
My FAV cordless saw was the Gen 1 cordless sawzall - until Gen 2 came along!!!
The Gen 1 has been running on our job sites for 4-5 years and was a workhorse and money maker for a long, long tie.
About 2 years into using the Gen 1 the blade clamp started sticking - requiring frequent lubrication and 4 years into this tool, the blade guard lever broke...
A year ago, I transitioned to the Gen 2 recip saw for all the reasons why they upgraded it.
• Lighter
• Increased Stoke length
• Improved Longevity
• Anti-Corrosion Blade Clamp
Ok let’s discuss those four in more detail:
Lighter
-------------
Milwaukee shaved a ½ pound off the tool [6.9 lbs. bare tool] but still beefed up common wear areas, while reducing weight in other areas.
Its ½ lb lighter, and has more rubber over-mold on the saw which helps with vibration dampening, and a more comfortable, long-term grip.
Increased Stroke Length
------------------------------------
The Gen 2 Sawzall still has a brushless motor that provides the same 3,000 SPM but Milwaukee increased the stroke length to 1-1/4 inches.
While a 1/8-inch stroke increase doesn’t seem like much this saw does cuts nail embedded wood, black pipe, and conduit faster.
Improved Longevity
---------------------
Internally they improved the longevity of the tool by improving the slider-crank mechanism better protecting it from water and dust ingress.
This improvement was a result of direct feedback from users complaining that when cutting water-filled pipes their saw clamp and crank mechanism would get wet and the mechanism would eventually rust or seize.
Water ingress and corrosion is common to the reciprocating saw landscape
The battery connection also has been reinforced with metal for improved durability and battery retention over the life of the tool. This improvement eliminated battery slop and connection issues.
The Extendable shoe got a HUGE upgrade and is both easier to actuate and more durable.
One change you may or may not immediately notice is that the extendable shoe actuator button is recessed and covered by think rubber over-mold - protecting it from damage.
Anti-Corrosion Blade Clamp
------------------------------------------
On my Gen 1 saw -
I can attest that on my older Sawzall the blade clamp sticks and
is difficult to actuate, and the blade guard lever has broken off.
Milwaukee replaced key parts of the blade clamp with stainless steel, for better wear and corrosion resistance.
So……did we get it right?
On the Gen 1 - I think so. We didn’t predict the rust issues but we were able to run our Gen 1 saw for 4-5 years, so I’m calling this a win.
The Gen 2 - well that sure seems like a win to me as well! We're into it now for about a year and it's going strong.
69 years ago Milwaukee released the first SAWZALL and a legend was born today, this saw still dominates the job site, I guess some things get better with age!

I still own my original corded Milwaukee Sawzall, could use a freshen up but still works and doesn't owe me a dime! I just bought then gen II and a bunch of other cordless tools. I like the effort you put into your tests and comparisons.

I am a plumber that loves his cordless Milwaukee tools but I have to say I have been beating the crap out of one of those porter cable tiger saws For going on two decades and it still says yes every time I touch it.

I’m a plumber and it’s good to know they fixed that problem. I loved mine but I had to buy two so I could get it fixed under warranty because it would lock up on me all the time.

Love the Tiger Claw, and all the old high quality PC stuff. Makita AVT probably my favorite corded sawzall though.

My Sawzall that I bought new in 1976 came with a steel case and it may not be as refined as new models with quick change blades, etc., and it may weep grease occasionally, but it is still going strong. It was a spurge at the time, but looking back, it was money well spent!!!

I owned both the corded Milwaukee Super Sawzall and the Porter cable Tiger Saw. Both were great saws and I still have them both. But you just can't beat the convenience of a cordless sawzall nowadays. I currently own the Gen 1 Milwaukee cordless Sawzall along with their cordless Super Sawzall which is a beast! But I also own a Makita and just recently got a great deal on the Metabo 36/18 volt reciprocating saw. Love them both too. I think the Metabo might give my Milwaukee Super Sawzall a run for its money! It's a beast too!

Hey Rob, hope all is well there.. Yes my number one complaint with the gen 1 was the blade clamp mechanism!! Definitely needed to be improved!

I found a Gen 1 at the dump yesterday. It's in amazing physical condition. Unfortunately no signs of life. The LED doesn't even come on when the trigger is pulled. But I just noticed after the battery has been connected for 5 minutes that the connection at the battery terminals gets incredibly hot. I can't find any info on this but at least your video's helped me identify that it's a Generation 1 :) Looks like another try to fix video is on the way lol. Thanks for showing me it's worth investigating, looks like a beast.

I have the gen 1 and all the flaws you've pointed out are the same issues I have. I have to constantly lube up the blade clamp and it can't get a drop of water inside it or it shuts down. I may look into the gen 2 if these issues have been addressed.

How do you like the Gen2 compared to the Super Sawzall? I currently have the Fuel M18 Super, and I would be hard pressed to switch to anything else. Oh, and I used to have a Porter Cable Tiger Saw----loved that thing.

Do you run mostly Milwaukee for your cordless tools? I’m pretty new to carpentry/remodeling and I’m looking to invest in hopefully only one platform. M18 fuel is my top choice at the moment. But I am very interested in Makitas new XGT. Do you see XGT coming out with more woodworking/carpentry focused tools like routers, jigsaws, multitools etc? I’m excited for the potential of that platform but I don’t want to buy into something that won’t have everything I need. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

IF I HAVE THE GEN 2 FUEL DO THE SUPERSAWALL IS A GREAT OPTION FOR HEAVY DEMOLITION DOES IT CUT FASTER ?
@JoeZasada
@JoeZasada 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you are cutting. Most of the time, yes. The adjustable orbital action allows you to cut wood faster. the adjustable speed limiter dial helps for metal cutting jobs where you want to limit the blade speed. It is a big bigger and heavier than the Fuel Gen2 though. FOr overhead use, the weight difference is a bit noticeable. I would suggest having both in your toolbox :-)

Honestly both them are weak in comparision to the Super Sawzall 2722 with the old stronger blade clamp and a much hardier shoe. I had the corded super sawzall and those both of the super version has orbital action and kick the other saws butt. .
