Impressive work from the hammer drills but another advantage of SDS is it doesn't burn out drill bits so quickly. Also when you hit a concrete lintel the standard drill really struggles but the SDS goes through it like butter.

Was a bit shocked at how well the m12 hammer drill did. You could see it struggling as the hole got deep though. Good for an odd bit where you need a hole in masonry, but if you are going to do it on the regular or need to go deep, then the rotary hammer is the way to go.

I recently bought a Gen 3 M13 Hammer Drill and had to drill a couple of 1/4” holes in a concrete wall, it performed perfectly. I had later wandered how much faster would it have been with the M18 SDS. You guys made this amazing video answering exactly that! I am astonished by the lack of different between the two when it comes time to use the smaller diameter masonry bits.

The biggest differences are all in favour of the SDS. The drill bits last much longer, the batteries last much longer, the SDS doesn't lose much power/speed when drilling a more difficult surface (the chuck drill loses a significant amount of speed when doing this) and the SDS does all of the work for you. Notice how hard the guy with the chuck drill had to work/push to make the drill even come close to the SDS. Image having to drill holes all day long, that would be a horrible day if you had the chuck drill.

I think the larger the diameter bit, the more the SDS will shine. I've been using the regular hammerdrill for years for my tapcon installs, and it does perfect. But for sinking 3/8" anchors, I reach for the SDS every time. Also, the SDS can do demo work.

This is the 5th tile project we've done where we've removed the old tile before installing new tile, and the first one with this tool kzfaq.infoUgkxqqoaX03nrziKwF7Bjjcc71YzLEleMvOS . I want to cry for all the unnecessary work we've done in the past. With this tool, we removed tile surrounding a fireplace, as well as the hearth tile, set in loads of cement, in less than an hour. I highly recommend this tool. It was easy to use, and very satisfying watching the tile literally fall off the wall.

I agree with some of the other commenters that the two tools can be quite comparable in some basic stuff but when it comes to the weird situation where you’re going through steel decking with concrete and there’s rebar + a hard spot of aggregate, the drill will struggle but the hammer drill will handle it just fine.
