The intro attacks Pruitt. The guys discuss why mimics may not be what they seem to a DM at first glance. Instead of being overlooked, they should be utilized to keep players on their toes. With crafted objects and natural formations possible enemies, the dungeon itself becomes an adversary. Pruitt interjects obligatory movie reference, in this case Aliens, to capture the mood of the seemingly empty environment.
This leads to a discussion on dungeon design. When to throw the mimics at the party. Pruitt posits a new origin for the 10 ft. pole. The phrase “Bomb Squad D&D” is envoked. Jim wonders if dungeons deserve respect. Pruitt tries to get philosophical. Typical. Jim continues with uses on mimics in mega dungeons to change up rooms when players revisit them. Jim gets all natural with a dim scenario of party walking into a cave ambush. Piercers, Ropers, Dark Mantles joining to descend on a hapless party. But what should the party do? Kill all the monsters. Or retreat and keep that room for use against future enemies. A tangent ensues of picking the right dungeon for your campaign.
Time for the Big Monster Breakdown! Starting with mimics, they’re sticky but could use a little help hanging on. Think about boosting that athletics check. Cloakers have the mirror image your wizard should have, and they can cause you to hit your allies if they grab ahold. On to the natural “mimics” Piercers are the dodo birds. Ropers can challenge a party, especially with the action economy. The use of small natural hindrances like mushrooms, and shriekers to help create a rave of death. RP out those hallucinations. Dark Mantles are also there. They can cast darkness. The guys were really running out of things to say, so Jim brings up the “tree stump bunny lure monster”, called the ‘ Wolf in sheeps clothes’. Pruitt’s mind is blown. In summary, mimics were created to shake up the game for players who had seen it all.
Stinger
The guys worry their show is too short. It happens to every show! Trav recalls a character from a Final Fantasy game. Jim counters with dopplegangers. We tease the next few shows. And talk about stretching.

I always wanted to use a gargantuan mimic that poses as a boat with ghosts of its victims on it. When you get deeper inside it removes exits, manifests mouths and tentacles, splits the party into different rooms and can flood rooms if its having a hard time with a party.

I'm actually already running this. I stole Kefka Polazzo from FFIII, who's a flaming narcissist psychopath already. I decided he wanted to be able to go anywhere, do anything, and multiple things at once, but instead of hiding he walks about with tons of dopplegangers. The players responded well to his initial outing, so I've created a network of Polazzo's. He's playing as a bard-warlock though, with an emphasis on illusion. Here's a list of his current dopplegangers. 1) No-face. A leper illusionist whom he forces to make look like him - he sends this character when he needs very delicate work done and needs someone who can make decisions on his behalf. 2) Iron Maidens. Doppleganger monsters that have been subjugated into having iron spikes riddle their body so their sneak attack is even worse - they are meant to terrorize, not to kill, their targets. They pretend to be Polazzo and track down his enemies then assail them doggedly to dissuade them from further actions. THey attack and retreat though, as they are too valuable to die - just scare the daylights out of anything that crosses polazzo. 3) Terrorizers. Iron Golems slimmed down and powered by magic, that are basically Terminator's in every way, shape and form. They take directions literally and often have to be accompanied by creatures that command them, he sends them on boring missions that he doesn't need to be there for, or major public outings to show face. They don't have the breath ability of Iron Golems, instead I've given them special grapple checks that, when successful, they immediately toss a creature 15 feet and they take fall damage. They, also, do not necessarily kill, they are designed to shame people who attack polazzo by showing feats of immeasurable strength, tossing his enemies aside during assassination attempts - these are clunky and prone to misinformed orders. The first one was attacked by the party, it survived but was sucked into the sands of Figaro, where it's slowly crawling its way out, having stripped most of its "skin" away trying to dig its way through sand. Yes, it will have creepy red-terminator eyes. 4) Kefka himself. Occasionally he just shows up - basically he arrives for the most opportune moments - for instance, the poisoning of Doma Castle, the gallows hanging of Celes Chere (a ruse), the really dark twisted stuff. 5) The Harbinger. He brainwashed a special-made dragonborne warlock into pretending to be him, under the guise that it would protect the dragonborne. He basically wanted to do this to subvert a cult that worshipped the dragonborne, and split its ranks, and to use his dopplegangers to protect him because he considered him his "ultimate stand-in" to the point where he'd send in dragonborne women to sleep with him under the guise, but they didn't know he was actually a dragonborne - he just liked watching them be terrorized. He forced them into these situations and the dragonborne, being only 14 at the time, had no idea. That's a player in this campaign's backstory, it's messed up, but it works so well. 6) Shapeshifter's brainwashed by the cult. These are more delicate agents, sent on missions according to their skillsets. They are brainwashed so thoroughly they actually believe themselves to be polazzo - this has been done by repeated castings of Modify Memory and feeblemind. This allows him to be anywhere and everywhere, his normal days are filled with horrific activities - he's currently torturing some wizards in an attempt to get them to cast "gate" on one of the main members, he has no idea that person is immune to that spell, so he's just torturing them for fun really. I've got more planned, that's just what's happened. It got so bad a PC actually decided to go to Vector personally and assassinate him, guessing (correctly) he'll be right next to the king at all times. She charisma checked a natural 20 and got perfect insight into Polazzo - and she found a way to determine the *real* polazzo because all his dopplegangers carry a deadly morningstar - which she deduced was there to hide his real one, which is heavily magical. She found a custom item that determines the true value of any item she looks at, and when she see's the real mace.... bingo bango. She even spec'd into assassin Rogue from Ranger JUST for this moment. I'm gonna let her ace him if she lands her hits.

I made a happy house mimic once. It produced food from nowhere, gave the players soft and cushy beds. Before the players left it shut the doors and it produced a paper that said, "20 gold, please" right next to a earthen bowl. They put 20 gold in and left the mysterious house without even knowing what the fuck just happened.

Once you realize Mimics have normal intelligence, they become a lot more fun. I'm running a Spelljammer campaign where Mimics can have class abilities so we have Mimic Martial Artists (Hinge-a's), Wizards (Mimicgicians), and fighters (Boxers). We're having a lot of fun with some of the moral elements of whether wizards can keep them as slaves or if they have to negotiate wages and whatnot.

I designed a PC that had managed to convince a Cloaker to act as his ACTUAL cloak, thus granting a resistance to all damage, which is a thing that could feasably happen as a cloaker is an intelligent creature, that would understand the symbiotic relationship of joining forces with an adventurer, however my DM said that he wouldn't allow a PC to have such a thing but that he might steal the idea for an NPC.

A while back in my high level campaign, we did a break with our B Team which consists of a bunch of 5th level characters who sorta work for our main characters. During the dungeon crawl the DM decided we were curbstomping too many things and threw in a roper as a road block and it ROYALLY fucked us up. No one died, but we came really close. When we beat the hell out of the Dungeon Boss in the next fight our DM found it endlessly amusing that we took down two Umber Hulks in a couple rounds but were one bad roll away from a TPK against a roper. Since then it's become a running joke that anything we're unsure about is hiding an army of ropers.

I once designed a town where mimics were kept as pets. The PCs come to this town, and are invited to the mayor's house for dinner, unaware of the town's quirk. They sit down with the mayor's family, which is ready to devour the large turkey at the center of the table. Suddenly, a large, toothy hole opens up in the table, swallowing the turkey whole. After several cries of "Aww, Gloopy!" (Gloopy was the name of the mimic), the mayor finds the real table, and shoos Gloopy out of the house. After explaining to the startled players how his great-great grandfather learned to tame mimics, the mayor et. al. go to see what's on the menu at the local tavern.

@CHRLPTRSN we reskined one for our wizard to act like the luggage, however it has planer warping to allow it to follow its master everywhere (though it needs to roll pretty decent to use it so it can't be abused) & we allow any clothing it spits out to smell of lavender - if you can get it to eat the wizard's dirty laundry in the first place. it's been an utter treat to see it run amok in our game (it's part PC, part DM controlled so it does get into all sorts of trouble)

Put two identical chests next to one another. Have party hear heavy breathing in the room, and the air is filled with a gas that conducts magic, causing an explosion if a spell is used. SolarFlair Wouldn't that just be a druid for all monster types?
@SolarFlairIsBestPony
@SolarFlairIsBestPony 7 жыл бұрын
Not really. It'd probably be like learning spell like abilities and maybe a few normal spells from monsters. Maybe some immunity / resistance to conditions. Druids can full on turn into various beings, but only of so high a power level and only so often unless they're extremely powerful... and they get their own spells aside from that and all the HP of things they turn into as a bonus. I'm not enough of an expert on D&D to be able to say exactly how you'd form a Blue Mage in it, but it'd definitely be different than a druid. It'd probably be like a ranger of some kind that can mimic monster abilities instead of enhanced martial abilities or companions or whatnot. Or maybe like a strange sorcerer or warlock with a build that can take a few good whacks.

Shared y'all to the group or 30-40 different people I play or have played D&D with (mostly DMed). Y'all have great info and insight into things that has redefined a lot of how I view monsters, different tiers of play, etc. Almost watched all of y'all's stuff and was hoping y'all could do a video on the Tomb of Beasts book. I noticed y'all don't have one on display at least, and it's really nifty if people want to throw more wacky weird monsters (like the old days of D&D) at their players.

Mimic Stupid? Who ever thinks that is the most stupid DM ever, these things are perfect for trolling the overly curious characters. Take for example a overly interested in everything high mysteries warlock, place a book on a shelf that looks promising by its cover, the Warlock picks it up and you have yourself a encounter the group and especially that warlock did not expect.
@SinerAthin

I think it's more "stupid" from a non DND/tabletop perspective :P You know, compare mimic to more mythological creatures, like the ghost, basilisk, meduse etc. Relatively 'normal' supernatural creatures. And then you just have the mimic, which would make any non-DND/gamer player go like "how the f did they come up with this??" xD

Our DM loves these for our resident arcane rogue and party-scout... he plays his Trickster like a crow, if its shiny he steals it. He's been eaten my a mimic twice now and the last time he couldn't resist grabbing a "red" silken cloth in the "chest"... aka the tongue. The whole time we're like,"Dude, really..? Clearly that's a Mimic..." He didn't even hesitate. Great fun.

(Marionette Spider) I created a monster for my Out of the Abyss campaign. It was a spider seemingly made entirely of fungus that used its appearance to blend into the locale of a fungal cavern on the area encounter roll. I added an interesting trait in that it had the ability to manipulate a humanoid corpse with a long thin stand of its webbing that served the function similar to an angler fish. The look on the parties faces when they chased a little Drow girl down a dark mushroom encrusted cavern only for her to dive into the wall and an enormous, foul creature to emerge moment's later literally from the wall with the lifeless body of the Drow hanging from one of its appendages. The stuff of nightmares. Not a single closed mouth.

I made an encounter long ago for a group that were treasure hunters. With a little enticing they stole a treasure map off of the adventurer after getting him drunk. Then they ran off straight to the location which was an abandon hero's den that was cover in a mud slide. The only way in was through the now top so they needed to climb down. When they got in they fought a a few dire bats and did find some good finds but didn't know how to get it out of there. While exploring they came to a room that was labeled "Room of a Thousands Mouths" when they walking in they saw an entire room packed with strange collation items. The first thing they notice was the value of the items range from priceless to worthless. Such as a gold lined chest incrusted in gems wile next to it was a simple rickety wooden chair. Others were platinum staffs, a simple broomstick, cloths woven with gold, one old chewed out boot, a red turban speckled with diamonds and a peacock feathers, a barrel of wine, ruby slippers, a coat hanger, an ornate dagger, rusty iron beat trap, a jade stature, a rag doll, a scale cover book, well dress pants, a empty burlap sack, etc. The second thing they notice was that all the items were all placed in a chalk line sigil. Note the group I had was nothing but rouges and fighters with one arcane trickster being their only magic user they had and he failed the arcane toss. One of them suggested if all the roguish thieves pull in there all their knowledge on traps to help there friend and I allow it but before any of them could role the fighter went over to the wine barrel and opened it... Yah, he just did that and as he looked inside it all around the rim grew sharp teeth and the barrel jumped up biting own around his head. Then he stared freaking-out screaming for his friends to help save him and what did his friends do? They just ask if they could finish their role. I asked if they were sure they want to do that pointing to their friend? They simply shrugged and said he can handle himself. The role was good and I told them that anything placed in the sigil wasn't able to move unless the sigil was broken or the item inside was touch. Just as I returned to the fighter on him getting out on his own he grabbed the dagger he saw earlier to stable the barrel mimic but the dagger transformed into a the shape of a scorpion stabbing at his hand. He still used it though making it on the side of the barrel mimic doing damage to both of them and himself. His mates were still calmly discussing about the sigils and whether or not al the items were dangerous mimics when the fighter came back after finally defining both of his mimics. Covered in bite marks and scratches he exhaustingly returned to his mates saying "That was close."' then with his herculean lungs let out a sigh that blew the sigil surrounding the the chest the group was in front of. The chest sprout two long arms grabbing one of the rogues opening the lid to show rows of sharp teeth and one slimy tung. His armor just barely protected him but it was chomping down on him hard. Two rogues held him by the feet while the other two were trying to cut the lid mouth on the mimic off. The fighter the just fought the barrel mimic tells his friends he'll use the coat hanger and before anyone could tell him no he grab it. Though he may play dumb he's not stupid before it can fully transform he jams it halfway deep into the chest mimics mouth. The Coat hanger comes to life and desperately try's to claw out of the mouth of the chest but is grabbed by the chess that try to pull it in as well. Now only having one hand on the rouge his friends were able to pull him out. Then barrel fighter punches the chest mimic alway. Yet that only makes things worst as the chess bumps into several other items and breaks more sigils as it stumbles around. The room now filling with more and more mimics coming to life the gang all then agreed it was time to get the hell out.

In our setting wizards use dungeons like magic batteries since the environment is soaked in magic from magic ores. They put magical elements in barrels and crates and leave them down there to 'age' magic items. Mimics have evolved naturally and evil magic users train them to guard their dungeons. My character is a bard who rescues and retrains mimics to be pets. They then function much like the luggage in Terry Pratchett's books. In exchange for being fed old magic items and offal (trash is good for them) they're able to carry around with them or store treasure in their multiple stomachs. He basically takes them from bad mages and gives them to good mages. Instead of killing those who sneak into the dungeon they're trained to capture them alive.

Random Intern's hand in frame when the video starts is hilarious, but does give me an idea. Having some kind of tell when an object is a mimic, sort of like dark souls when the chests breath or have decorations in a certain orientation, is a good way to reward players who take the time to look at the chests. You know, rather than just say "it looks like a normal chest" on a bad roll or "its salivating" on a good one. Once a player recognizes the pattern and they say they're looking for that specific detail, either give advantage (whether its a mimic or not) or forgo the roll all together and just give the correct information.

I've run a "haunted house" one-shot with all the mimic-type monsters - the idea being, an empty mansion suddenly seems to be populated again, but the house hasn't been bought by anyone and the last guy who went to go greet the new neighbors hasn't come back. In reality, literally all the furniture is mimics, there's animated objects all over the place, and there's something in the attic that's summoning/creating more.

I feel like video games have absolutely stolen any thunder from treasure chest mimics they could possibly have. Strikes me a little weird you guys didn't really acknowledge that at all. Using other forms is great, heck, using treasure chest ones is great too, but the amount of actual surprise you will get is low. It's more like people will be wondering if and when it's coming. The real surprise for those people though might be the adhesive, that's not video gamey. Crank that up like you said and now you've got some panic. Maybe put a few of them in a treasury and add some durability to them as they cling on.
