A hearty, comforting one-pan dish perfect for any family meal. This cobbler features a savory minced beef filling, rich with flavours of onions, garlic, carrots, celery, and potatoes, all simmered together in a robust tomato and beef stock base. The filling is seasoned with Worcestershire sauce and thyme, giving it a deep, satisfying flavor.
The crowning glory of this dish is the delightful cheddar cheese suet dumplings. Made from self-raising flour, Atora suet, and a generous helping of grated cheddar cheese, these dumplings are soft and fluffy on the inside and slightly crisp on the outside. Their cheesy richness perfectly complements the savoury beef filling.
Cooked entirely on the stovetop, the dish is finished by steaming the dumplings on top of the beef filling, ensuring they soak up all the delicious flavors. Served hot, this minced beef and potato cheddar cheese cobbler is the epitome of comfort food, offering a deliciously warm and satisfying meal for any occasion.

Taking Cooking food back to basics.
Ingredients:
For the Minced Beef Filling:
- 500g minced beef
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 carrots, diced
- 2 celery sticks, diced
- 200g mushrooms, sliced
- 1 tbsp tomato puree
- 400g canned chopped tomatoes
- 300ml beef stock
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tsp dried thyme or a few sprigs of fresh thyme
For the Cheese Suet Dumplings:
- 100g self-raising flour
- 50g Atora suet - use the butter to 50g if you have no suet
- 50g grated cheese (cheddar works well)
- A pinch of salt - optional
- A pinch of pepper - optional
-A Pinch of dried Thyme
- Cold water (about 75ml)
NOTE: As I said in the video, if you cannot get suet, you can make the same type of dumpling with Butter. They will be a tad heavier.

Young kids miss this nowadays it all junk food they eat ready meals and the like. It doesn't take too much time or effort to make something like this and it is reasonably economical plus it gives near enough your five-a-day minerals proteins and above all a laid back stuffed contentment.

Love the one pot, stovetop meal! Great for someone with limited mobility and limited ability to lift/carry heavy hot items to/from the oven. This has now become my style of cooking, unless someone is visiting who can manage the lifting. Love the idea of the cheddar cobbler topping. Never would have thought of that. Great way to slightly alter my typical fare (Italian-style ragu) with a couple of starch and herb substitutions to mix it up a bit. Thanks, Rik!

It’s strange Rik,as I watch all these minced meat dishes from the UK,I just don’t remember my Mother making them, and she cooked all the time as it was the late ‘40s,’50s,and the early ‘60s when I grew up.I remember she made keema curry with mince, that I loved, but that’s all I remember.I remember the Sunday joints, and eating the left overs cold with pickles, because I didn’t like the taste of reheated meat,I remember lots of fish, not fish, and chips,I remember stews, just not mince type dishes, yet they seem to be so popular,I wonder if my Mom just didn’t like mince.

Lovely Rik. My Mother never used suet in her dumplings. It was always SR Flour and Stork, and they were light as a fiddle. For a minute there when you were saying "a little bit of this", I thought you were going to burst into song. Keep well and stay safe

Rik, this looks so good and I found some suet the other day, I actually got the last packet there. I grabbed it quick. I’ll be definitely making this when I get home from my daughters house. This will be my first time using suet. I haven’t had it since I lost my parents so I’m looking forward to it. I always have cravings for steak and kidney pudding, the way mum used to make it but I’ve never tried it, maybe it’s time I did try it. Thanks for the great video.

Switched on utube and what do I find. Delicious receipe. Was going to make cottage pie tommorow now it is your receipe cheesey dumpling tops mince beef. Happy days. Even purchased carrots making carrot cake midweek treat. Really enjoy the many surprises you bring. The don't stress is the best. My husband now say 'look at that' as he tucks into lunches and dinners. Thank you.

This is real cooking. This is how my old Mom used to do it. Good one Rik. For those of us in the States, "Bizquik" makes a nice fluffy dumpling if you can't find suet. To me, fluffy dumplings are the way, those gummy chewy kind they like in the south, sucks in my opinion, but hey...whatever you like :) We always called this 'Hamburger Soup'...easier to say than your version Bud :) It is delicious and this is a good version. It probably should have been called "hamburger and let's see what else we got soup". Make this folks, it's gud fud.

Cheers, mate - I was going to make Hamburger gravy - however a mum came on a couple of days ago and said her disabled daughter watches and makes the dishes off the channel. She asked if I could make a minced beef cobbler - I hope she see's it. Thank you. Best, Rik

My mom used to make a "chopped beef stew" with hamburger meat. Basically everything that would go in a regular beef stew, but a quick version using minced beef. Pretty similar to this recipe, but in a more vertical soup pot and no dumpling/cobbler topping. I haven't made it in a while. Thanks for reminding me.
