It is my understanding that Dimash did not agree with the idea of competing against children, and there apparently had been some misunderstanding. The last time he performed for the judges and experts, he told them he appreciated the opportunity and that it had been a great honor, however he felt compelled to bow out to give the children a chance to progress. Imagine, no 12 year old was going to out-sing Dimash! With a sharp intake of breath, one of the experts there said softly, “He’s going to sacrifice himself.” You see, he would have won the prize of $1 million dollars. Thanks to honorable Dimash, one of the 12 year olds won the prize. Rupaul talked to Dimash is such a rude horrible way, it embarrassed me to be an American. That’s one of the reasons we dears love Dimash!

He is so awesome, isn’t he? Stranger is one of my absolute favorite songs. I get goosebumps every time I hear it. I’m a real fan of movies that have such a mystical or oriental atmosphere. And it was such a great idea by Dimash to use the Qobyz for that. The Qobyz is a very old two stringed Kazakh folk instrument and it’s wide spread among Kazakhs. The man who often is playing the kobyz in Dimash’s performance (also here in Stranger) is the best on this instrument and a good friend of Dimash. His name is Olzhas Qurmanbek. You often can hear this instrument when Dimash sings in his native tongue like Samaltau, Qairan Elim or Òmir Òter. In the end of Stranger he introduced him to the audience and he thanked them. As a Kazakh he speaks Kazakh and Russian fluently. He sang Stranger for the first time at New Wave in Sochi, Russia in 2021. This is an international competition for young artists, founded in 2002 by Igor Krutoy. Dimash sang here as a guest and was also a member of the jury. Igor Krutoy, like so many other masterpieces, wrote this song specifically for Dimash and his incredible vocal range (in this song alone he sings 5 octaves F1-F6 I think). And the last note he held for 20 seconds. The way he switchs so affortlessly between the different registers and octaves in one song is so mesmerizing and unbelievable. Stranger was written by the famous Russian/Ukrainian composer, producer and songwriter Igor Krutoy. His and Dimash's collaboration created true masterpieces. He writes songs that only Dimash could sing with his vocal range, such as Olimpico, Stranger or Ave Maria. You’ll often see him accompanying Dimash on the piano. Stranger is a favorite! Try his December 2023 duet with Placido Domingo, at the latter's request. For power and range try his Olimpico performance of Ogni Pietra (lightstick opening vs. fancam). The female choir answers his low notes and the male singers complement his high notes. The 2017 version of Adagio is one of his most emotional performances on the Chinese competition that made him an international star - his English then was pretty much phonetic but still brings tears. All of the performances from that show should be seen - some clips have backstage pieces that show him before and after a performance. In one, his father has flown in to surprise him. After the song he sees his father and in all earnestness asks, 'Was I good?' I love his video of 'Screaming' - completely different from his live performance. He supplies his own back-up; truly angelic.

That was the first time Stranger was performed. It was written by the guy at the piano, Igor Krutoy, just for Dimash. At 4 octaves and 5 semitones, who else could sing it?

That instrument is called a Kobyz. It is a common instrument used in his homeland of Kazakhstan. When Maestro Krutoy was composing this song it was dimash's idea to incorporate that instrument into this performance which made it the Masterpiece that it is
