The Greek statesman Demosthenes is credited with saying “I am a citizen of the world,” and the idea that we should take a cosmopolitan view of our common humanity is a compelling one. Not everyone agrees, however; in the words of former British Prime Minister Theresa May, “If you are a citizen of the world, you are a citizen of nowhere.” On the other side of the political spectrum, groups who share a feature of identity - race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and others - find it useful to band together to make political progress. Kwame Anthony Appiah is a leading philosopher and cultural theorist who has thought carefully about the tricky issues of cosmopolitanism and identity. We talk about how identities form, why they matter, and how to negotiate the difficult balance between being human and being your particular self.
Kwame Anthony Appiah received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Cambridge University. He is currently Professor of Philosophy and of Law at New York University. He is the author of numerous academic books as well as several novels. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and is the recipient of a number of major awards, including the National Humanities Medal of the United States. He currently writes the New York Times Magazine column “The Ethicist“, and frequently writes for The New York Review of Books. (Note that in the podcast intro I mistakenly said he was “born and raised” in Ghana; he was actually born in London, moving to Ghana when he was six months old.)

Thanks Sean! I love that you have a great number of guests on your show, that don't do the rest of the podcast circuit and aren’t just pop science/philosophy people.

I don't feel I have an identity , no job , no skills , no beliefs , I walk around the city in a fake suit and empty briefcase to fit in

In a suit and with a briefcase there are few places you'll fit in. Try jeans and a cellphone.

Isn't how you described yourself, your unique identity? Cool

Whether white privilege or any other privileges exist or not, any person should be able to talk about any topic and the identity of the speaker shouldn't be factored into the argument.

Exactly it's a trait that no one has control over. Who you are should be determined by what you do not what you look like.

@@emilylowrance7930 Yes, or woman talking about circumcision or prison rape. Issues are to be discussed by rational argumentation and statistics, not by subjective anecdotal experiences.

@@Sol_Invictus77 i think its pretty cool that my partner and his ex wife agreed to leave their son intact. it is a decision adults make on behalf of those under their care. I've never been in prison but i'm sure its not easy for either sex!

Can't say I agree with the ideas discussed, but it was still a very nice conversation. Always interesting listening to the other side.

I'm white and I live in Japan, and it's not uncommon for non-Japanese who are strangers to greet one-another where we wouldn't greet Japanese strangers. This hold regardless of the race of the non-Japanese.

Is it a kind of Gaijin identification? I guess it is stronger than the fact that in most of Brazil, all foreign people/tourists are "gringos". Even Southeast citizens, from São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro are "gringos" in Northern /Northeast, and, "gingros" may be object of all kinds of schemes and deceitful behavior. That word should fit to USA citizens only... All cultures are changing, one feels the "Nippon effect" lowering its walls. Is that true? Have I ever been a Gaijin? No I haven't, so it's a hear say, or at most, an educated guess.

Seems like most of the discussion is here rather than on the blog, so here I am. I think it was a wonderful conversation with plenty of nuance to be had. (Contrast thos claiming nuance only to replace it with their own simplistic narrative.) It was very enjoyable, although perhaps the prisons in Hong Kong are no longer as good as they were when Appiah did his research. Speaking of Hong Kong, I wonder if the idea of inviting someone involved in the protests onto the podcast has ever crossed your mind?

"Nothing of him that doth fade, But doth suffer a sea-change Into something rich and strange." The Tempest has an unsatisfactory ending, we should turn it into a tragedy.... Joan D. Vinge used it at "World's End" , part of the series The Snow Queen / The Summer Queen. It developed a social prejudice object individual as main character. This comment, apparently is related to this episode and the 189th, about power and more. Cut it or relate to it... Congratulations to both interventions. Thanks for the opportunity.

The question of reparation is simple: we need to suppress money and replace it with sharing according to needs and contributing according to abilities. Since most rich people don’t have practical useful abilities they will dig the earth to plant potatoes.
