Mind the Game Pod w/ LeBron James and JJ Redick

Күн бұрын

Welcome to Episode 6 of Mind the Game with LeBron James and JJ Redick. This episode was recorded a few weeks and it's our favorite one yet. Here we discuss the evolution of shooting in the NBA and how it's completely changed the way basketball is played. First we discuss how purpose of the modern NBA offense is to put two on the ball and the best players at doing that (Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic, James Harden). Then the guys dig into early shot clock three-pointers and self created three-pointers like step-back threes and how those have also expanded the modern NBA offense. Which leads us into how difficult it is for defenses today to stop these offenses covering so much space. And finally, JJ and LeBron tough on the catch-and-shoot three-pointers and play a thought experiment where LeBron has to draw up his favorite ATOs for JJ - plays like "Victory", "Oklahoma", and "Clippers Down."
Again this is one of the nerdiest episodes of Mind the Game we'll ever do and we can't wait for you all to see it!
Subscribe to Mind the Game podcast with LeBron James and JJ Redick today for more NBA insight, analysis, highlights and more.

One thing I can think to improve even more is that after JJ explains a play at the start to play a clip of an NBA game example, I feel like that would make it much easier to understand and remember EDIT: I know they already doing that when he's talking with LeBron. I meant at the start when he's explaining the terms, it would be easier to memorize and visualize seeing an actual example right after instead of being shown much later on in the video

The 2016 Cleveland Cavs beat a best record Warriors with a full squad. No injuries that playoffs. In a 3-1 deficit. One of the most incredible Finals. I don't think most people understand how incredibly challenging that was to do. Till this day, people still downplay that historic Finals comeback.

Yeah after a bs suspension and ejection. Followed by 2 more finals losses. Then a couple sweeps and first round exits. Y’all can have that little 3-1 run. Which actually isn’t that big of an accomplishment. So many teams have been up 2-0 then lose 4 games in a row compared to 3 in a row with 3-1

Not sure if you'd consider a Q&A section but here's two: 1. What percentage of NBA possessions involve a formal 'play'? 2. How are play calls shared without telling the the other team? Particularly in the playoffs where they likely have studied your sets

there are stats that track how much of the time a team runs set plays in a game, its usually 40ish% in the half court from what i see

This is cause and effect basketball. Too many players in the league think athletic ability trumps everything so they refuse to think the game thru. I was a victim of this early on in my football days. You’ll see DBs getting burned because they take the bait not realizing they are being played the whole time. The moment you bring your brain to the game everything changes.

Just came here to say in 2016 Lebron led that series in EVERY stat possible . Points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks. He led both teams in those stats. If you still wanna say Jordan the goat. Lebron HAS to be second as long as we acknowledge that.

The thing about those strategies, they only worked if u had one guy who could keep up with scoring but mainly could lockdown all 5 positions like Shawn Marion did. Teams now play this up tempo and offense with either no one on the floor with defensive game or the ones that do play defense are lackluster on offense

Loveeee the hammer play. There's been many occasions where the low man on the side where the shooter will eventually receive the ball, they don't call out that back screen so that shooter's defender is blindsided by that. I remember being at a Raptors Coaches clinic where the Raptors ran exclusively this hammer action for like 5 mins straight. I really appreciate this pod and the insight. It really opens things up in terms of how we see the game and that's regardless of what level anyone plays at. Amazing stuff.
