turns out this was all a bug & its getting fixed in minecraft 1.17.1! in todays 1.17.1 pre release 2 the bug was fixed. hope ya enjoy the video anyways 💫

I noticed that there's an absurd amount of Redstone in the caves, but personally I thought that diamond is more common in the new update because in both of my worlds I somehow found diamonds(8 vein in the first world and 4 vein in the second one) pretty easily. In the first world I found diamonds just by strip mining a little bit, so I have no idea how you guys are having trouble finding diamonds, but I think I'm just lucky lol...

As a veteran of Minecraft, I have been mining diamonds still on Y 12, so I hope I get more diamonds…

Aren't diamonds back to normal? I had an update that said they were, and I've tried the y5 thing. Totally not worth imo. I've been finding plenty on y11, and there's no way getting lava dumped on my head on y5 is worth it when I am finding more diamonds at the normal spot Edit: like a true noob I commented before reading Wattles disclaimer comment so yeah. Diamonds have been fixed.

If anyone is interested, if you find lapis and head 4 blocks north then there should be diamonds straight down from there. If not, you’ve hit a chunk border so just head south to the start of the chunk and keep counting the 4 (e.g. if you find lapis, dig 2 blocks north and hit a chunk border, head south and then north again at the chunk border by mining 2 more blocks before down) hope that makes sense!

The video was helpful to me and thanks for that wattles. I will be looking for diamonds at y5 and y6 now and I haven't done that yet and I didn't know that until now. Happy minecrafting!

First, great video. Both you and X did admirable jobs on the mathematics and mechanics. Having said that, both of you omit two important factors in mining at y=5: Time and risk. Yes, you can chew through stone with an efficiency 5 pick, but if you are just starting off with stone or iron, it takes FOREVER to mine grimstone, not to mention getting stopped by huge gravel pockets. And then there's the increased chance of having lava to the face which means diverting or changing direction entirely, so whatever time you are gaining at y=5, those factors still make y=11 a more attractive proposition IMHO.

I've seen many tests measuring the actual diamond counts on massive scales so I knew this was a thing but it's good to see merit to it also actually being faster. Would need to see a sample size of like 2 orders of magnitude higher to call it representative at all but this is very suggestive that lava at least deepslate isn't a large issue for the mining speed compared to the extra diamonds you find. Haven't seen much lava factored in so feel like you did get incredibly lucky on the y=5 and it may very well be a closer call realistically on large mining sessions but I very much doubt it'll ever be slower looking at this.

Hey wattles, I heard the reason for the change is because diamonds are now coded to spawn much lower, like in the negative levels, but negative levels obviously are not in the game yet, so diamonds are very rare.

In caves and cliffs 2: electric chilliger they should make diamond level random for each world, somewhere between 10 and -40. That would add a new sub-game to the game of trying to dial in the best level.

I mined for 3 hours on Y11 and found 6 diamonds, after that I went down to Y6 and I found half a stack in less than an hour

Really good info mate, have you tried creating a world, checking the location of diamonds where you cleared out all the blocks etc and then delete the world and do the same seed again and check the same location. does that give you dimonds in different places ?

in bedrock i mined for over 3 hours and only found 1 diamond. its really annoying but ill try mining at Y5 next time

I'd say mining on Y6 is the best idea, since it would let you see Y5, Y6, Y7, and Y8, all at once. Just like how prior to 1.17, the best was to mine at Y10, as it let you see Y9, Y10, Y11, and Y12.

Wouldn't the test be more effective if he continued to mine straight to see how long it would take to find more diamonds rather than finding some and changing the location since people mainly will mine straight for awhile.

wouldn't it be easier to just get a 1.17 x-ray texture pack, and just write down the coordinates of al the diamond clusters when going around in spectator mode? then compare the y levels

Even though this has been fixed now, this video should help me find diamonds in all the areas I already loaded in... where I wasn't finding crap at y11. I will branch below those spaces now and hopefully find all the juicy missed diamonds before moving to a new location 👌👌

You have to do at least 100 mining sessions for Y5 and Y11 and count time for all of them and divide by 100. That would be the right decision. Sometimes after 5 blocks you cant find diamonds but sometimes it takes 10 minutes

I mined for maybe an hour or 2 and found 3 patches that added up to 6 ore total

I think it might be about previous explored chunks. My friends and I have a world that was made before the emergency diamond update. Out of the 7 of us playing only 2 of us have found diamonds, each found 2 single diamonds. After that little update we managed to find more but we had to travel a bit far from where we played

Personaly in my world i find that using a respiration 3 and aqua affinity helmet and then going into underwater caves and ravines you will find with this method that you get a ton of gold iron coal and redstone aswell

I've still been struggling hard to find diamonds, I've branch mined in multiple chunks pre and post update and 1k blocks on 1 direction at y 11 and none in sight, I might try going lower at this point

I had an idea Step 1 Copy survival world Step 2 Activate cheats in said world Step 3 Creative Step 4 Look around for diamonds Step 5 Find and record the coordinates of the diamonds and enjoy Step 6 Repeat for any ore.

When I saw the 2 netherite pickaxes, I thought you were going to mine at each height until the picks broke and count total diamonds.

I have strip mined in my survival world for 15 hours at y-11 and found no diamonds. I'm so mad about this.

Doing 3x2 branch mines with the bottom block being Y10 (so mining Y10-Y12) I feel like I’m finding veins of diamonds left and right. Way more than I ever did in previous versions plus at that depth you don’t really have to worry about lava pools since they generate at 10 and below

Hey I had a thought of a great way to not only have an area that would be relatively safe from mobs but would get you the resources needed to get a steady supply of torches and the answer is warped/crimson nyluim blocks, nether rack and bone meal as you could make your own forest underground with literally just those three things: need light sources to stop mobs from spawning near your base? Just use bone meal on warped fungus that is sitting on warped nylium or on crimson fungus that is on crimson nylium and boom mushroom tree that will have one to three shroomlights in it, need to make a ton of torches for a long exploration session keep your warped or crimson forest properly maintained and you can burn the logs to get charcoal which can be used for torches. If I’m honest the easiest to get without silk touch would be warped nylium blocks because the endermen that populate the warped forests commonly pick them up

That explains why I am having such a hard time finding diamonds in this release.

if anyone wants to know, the diamond generation change was due to the ore generation changes before the update split. Diamonds were supposed to generate as low as possible in the world before the update split. The devs forgot to remove the change in ore generation when the split the update

i dug straight down and found a network of connected caverns around y -25 and found loads of diamonds literally ended up with two stacks (64) so i’ve also been wondering if they’re more common? all that was down there was gold and diamonds , more diamonds than coal and iron!

Ive had some weird stuff happen since 1.17 man, first my iron farm stopped spawning golems as soon as 1.17 released, and they just started spawning again a day or two ago, with no changes made. Then today most of the villagers in the closest village have stopped sleeping. They path to their beds just before sundown as usual but then spend all night standing on a bed going hmmm.

Last time I checked for the most common level with diamonds several months ago it suggested the Y-5 through Y-7/8 height, if I recall. I thought that's the been the idea for quite a while now. Interesting. Hadn't even heard of any differences since the update.

Good video but like you said it is a small sample size so i don't think i can draw any conclusions. Also i think that if you measured how long it took you to find them it would just be luck alot of the time but if you measured how many diamonds you found in a long time of mining that might be more reliable but that's just an idea.

The best y lvl is actually the swamp.

Just ran a two-sample t-test for the mean time to find diamonds. For the alternative hypothesis that the mean time is greater at y=11 (against the null hypothesis that they’re equal), I got a p-value of 0.1273, which means that if the mean times are actually equal at both levels, there’s a 12.73% chance of y=11 being this much slower or more. Generally that’s not considered statistically significant, so it doesn’t provide what a statistician would call convincing evidence that y=11 mining is slower. Like you said this mostly comes from the small sample size- it gives us a smaller t-score (a number that we use to find the p-value; larger t implies lower p) and fewer degrees of freedom (fewer degrees of freedom means higher p).

In bedrock I have dug 3 tunnels at y5, one is 150 or so blocks, the other 2 are over 400, I found 3 diamonds. I dug a tunnel 5 or 6 hundred blocks at y11 and found 4 diamonds. All the tunnels are 3x3.
