@@nicolefischer1504 Because all of the comparator functions work on redstone signal strength you can can use one comparator instead of building a 4 bit subtractor or magnitude comparator (without A = B) so in those cases comparators can cut down on a lot of gates. 3:13 I remember making a similar circuit, but it used XOR gates to detect where the boundary between the powered and unpowered redstone was. (The point at which the signal strength ends would be the only point where there would be a powered and unpowered signal directly next to each other). I had no idea what the circuit was called nor how to build a better one.

weirdly enough it's easier to understand what a comparator does after learning electronics. Op amps actually are mirrors of this. For the first function, obviously there is no analog. Second function: Op amps can be constructed into "voltage buffers/ followers". These essentially keep the signal strength. Third function: Op amps can be used as comparators, and the + - pins can be used to do this. Op amps "want" a null difference between both terminals, and if there is not, the maximum / minium voltage will be outputted. Therefore, appling the first voltage to the + and the second to the - is equivalent. Fourth function: Merge inverting mode and non-inverting mode to make a subtractor In summary, comparators are like op amps.
