I would like to address a problem with the modified version of Gangles Grand MIS which is apparently experiencing issues with the multi item sorter, I don't have time to look at it currently but this is just a heads up that you may experience issues with that variant specifically.

The real greatest storage system: dozens of chests and shulkers randomly strewn all over the place, each with completely random items inside.

for the minecart filters problem: you could insert 20 items in the chest for the filter: you send 4 at the beginning of the operation to be assigned to the filters, and 16 at the end in order to clean up any extra items. Finally, clean the filters as normal.

The first Concept is a great one and impressive. The nice thing is a player can adapt this concept with compromise. Etho's Storage system from HC S8, "The Googler" as he called it, had the same shulker box sorting system with automatic assignment and Un-assigning of sorted items. The compromise with the googler was speed, He didn't have to place the sorting items himself, but it wasn't as fast as these; though for many players individually that's probably the way to go.

Correction: My system does merge boxes. Just doesn't wait for ss15 only makes sure it gets all like items in an input cycle. Can also throw the smaller boxes from separate cycles back through to consolidate.

This is a great compilation of all the different approaches to item sorting. What is missing, in my opinion, is a menion of the "robustness" of each design. Over the past three years I have built and used many different storage and sorting systems. And some systems have turned out to be more prone to breaking than others. This can of course also come from mistakes I made, but in my opinion this also deserves to be discussed. I myself build these storages to mainly function, without having to be fixed over and over. Which is why I have now opted for a more simple design, like the brute force dolphin sorting, as it has turned out to be least likely to break for me.

Gangles MIS remains one of my favourite storage systems, along with the Parallel Cart Multi Item Sorter from Metamilo - it’s fast, small and just visually mesmerising

I had the same issue with Gangles Grand MIS and I was not advanced in storage tech to resolve it myself. Love that you addressed this! Don't care about not having access to partial shulkers for bulk.

It’s definitely important to choose the storage system that works best for you… I think a lot of players would actually find a purely manual system to work best for them but are caught up in making everything in their world redstone-y. Great video!!

I've seen gangles MIS and bulk storage layout before, and I've made some modifications myself. I made it so that each bulk item has their own shulker box sorter, and the input could detect the difference between full shulker and a partially filled shulker, so that it doesn't waste time sorting full shulker boxes of items. It's not the fastest sorter out there, it only sorts items at single hopper speed, but if you play single player with carpet mod, you can speed it up using tick warp, and it works fantastically.

I made a recycling system that splits the item stream into 4 loops that then continues to rotate the items once all the items in that particular loop doesn't match. In essence it's the same as the brute force method but the overflow system leads into another loop. The item stream is split using hoppers with items being yeeted at super speeds over the top. Unfortunately its not great at sorting small amounts of items but large chest minecart full works perfectly.

I did try out Gangles Grand MIS but I found that the odd item was going into the wrong chests at random - not sure what went wrong. Cass's Categorizer is my personal favourite. Edit - my bad on Grand MIS must have been an issue with V1.

Meanwhile my storage just consists of single wide sorters followed by single wide shulker loaders below all in a long row

Storage tech before hoppers were introduced: just a bunch of people with full inventories of a single item and standing next to a water stream.

at 12:00 you mention that you hold the i key to scan hoppers inventories. litematica has a keybind for toggle gui overlay which isnt set to anything by default, saves you from stretching over to the i key while scanning

You could have the boxes checked for their fill level, and then just use a different system to unload them, or just dump them into a separate chest

After spending some time with all the systems I realized that your version of gengles full system had some trouble with the item filters… everything seemed to be going to the same chest. I looked at some of the item filters and found that one of them had 18 instead of 19 filters and that some of the chests were missing items as well. Am I just unfamiliar with this type of item filtering or was there an issue

I noticed the Dolphin Sorter 2.0 showcased in the video is not the same as the world download. Most notably, there seems to be a red stained glass preventing any items from the shulker box unloader to enter the water stream (same with the leftover shulker boxes). Overall the shulker box unloader is quite different (world download version uses composters for example). I removed the glass and it seems to be working fine. I'm confused nobody else has mentioned this, am I missing something?

You got a litematic of your modified version of boyenn's Parallel Entity Item sorter? Been wanting to mess around with it to implement with your ultimate storage system, but some of the hopper/dropper/dispenser inventories seem to be bugged out in the WDL (might just be an issue with me opening the wdl in 1.20.1)

I wonder how well would allay shulker filter with "normal" item filter work. My idea is to have 15 different colored shulker boxes color coded for farms that get items in extreme emounts - like cobble, basalt, wood, sugar cane, etc. To combat limited number of colors, you could have colors assigned to similar item types, like grey box would containt cobble, stone, basalt for example, then after allay takes that grey box, it would go then into a separator for contained items, so cobble shulker boxes would land in one chest, stone in other etc. I imagine fast shulker loader/unloaders would work here with hopper minecarts assigned filters. That way we could potentially sort out all items produced automatically while afk and others if we would make some sort of system to pack processed items into color coded boxes. The one shulker without assigned color (could be default one) would then go into different type of sorter of your choice, maybe single item double hopper speed sorter, multi item sorter, dolphin or whatever else you would want. Just thought about this watching this video, no idea how practical, fast, reliable etc. it would be, but it seems like an interesting concept to me. Unfortunately I am not very knowledgable about redstone and other game mechanics, so I could maybe make just a proof of concept and see if it works, but if it sounds like a good idea, maybe someone will explore it further. Edit: I think it would be good idea to add some sorters into last stage to filter out items from non-color-coded boxes, box them and return to allay filter. Also you could choose to only keep full boxes in bulk shulker storage and send any overflow of empty boxes into loaders mentioned above. Would be wise to keep a buffer of boxes in bulk part so it doesn't break or something. I made all this in like 10 min so don't take anything in this comment as finished concept.

What I like about Minecraft storage systems, is that after building an elaborate item sorting system, you will still have overflow chests with random crap in them like before haha.

Watching such advanced sorting systems like this makes me question why I bother to try to design my own systems lmao. My ones are so much slower, old-school, and way more convoluted with 1-item ordering (which returns a stack for every item thrown in, if it's assigned... Sick of running through storage halls) overflow protection, indication lights, and all this other anti-tamper stuff... But it's so massive, inefficient, and doesn't support shulkers lol. Worst of all worlds, but I guess it'd suit my needs if I were ever brave enough to build it in survival.

I guess a theoretical solution to the sorters at the beginning would be to empty the filter carts completely and sort out the filter items. Next step would be to inject a dummy item into each minecart to reserve slot 1. Next replace the filter items and then finally take out the dummy items. This way you could guarantee that there are no left over items in the filter carts. Disclaimer, I have no idea how this would be accomplished for I am not a redstone genius.

Well I tested Dolphin sorting system 2.0 and found that 1. Sometimes it does not fullfill the entire doublechest with the item and redirect the flow of all items to the overflow stream 2. I couldn't find the shulker boxes I accidentaly put into the chest minecart (designed for the items). They just disapear ???? 3. right Dolphin died in several minutes after I entered the world :( I didn't move any block by that time

you know... if multi-item sorting is any faster per block of item travel, then you could just use multi-item sorting to split the stream of items for single-item sorters to sort, gaining the water stream compactness of multi-item sorting, and the specificity of single-item sorting. This is a trick old buildcraft players will be all too familiar with, as in buildcraft the diamond pipes can split an item stream (and in pipes, items can flow arbitrarily densely, just like in a water stream) into five parts based on category (9 slots per direction), so the common buildcraft sorting machine would look like a series of diamond pipes splitting off 36 item types per junction, and each steam of 9 would then be sorted by two more diamond pipes. It's really such a shame buildcraft was only really a thing long long long before shulker boxes
