Welcome back to our engaging metal detecting series with Scott from Crawfords Metal Detectors. As we approach the penultimate episode, we delve into one of the most scientifically complex aspects of metal detecting: Ground Balance. This crucial episode features insights from Minelab experts Mark Lawrie and Phil Beck, along with the seasoned perspective of detectorist Paul Cee, exploring the intricate science and essential techniques of ground balancing.
Ground balance is a foundational concept that can significantly impact the effectiveness of your metal detecting. By understanding and adjusting your detector's ground balance, you can enhance its sensitivity to desired targets while minimizing the interference from mineralized soil. This episode is packed with technical explanations, practical advice, and expert tips to help you navigate the challenges of various ground conditions.
In this fourth instalment, we cover:
*The scientific principles behind ground balance and why it's vital for successful detecting
*How ground mineralization affects detection depth and accuracy
Prepare to enhance your detecting prowess by mastering ground balance. This episode is a must-watch for anyone looking to unlock the full potential of their metal detector and unearth treasures that others might miss.
Subscribe to Crawfords Metal Detectors on KZfaq and don't miss this deep dive into the science of metal detecting. Stay tuned for our final episode, where we'll tie everything together and prepare you for your most rewarding treasure hunting adventures yet.

When are we going to get some good noise canceling headphones for are Minelab detectors? I have a Manticore a Nox 900 and Xterra and have put them in the tool shed because I can’t stand the stock headphones.

When doing a manual ground balance do you need to find a clean bit of ground to ground balance on or does it not matter where you do it

Great question. The answer is not really. If you have a large piece of ground, and one patch is 'clean' upon which you ground balance, but then you go and detect on the 'unclean' patch then you're not really helping yourself. Ground balance for the environment you are in. If the ground is all 'unclean' then that's the environment that your detector needs to be balanced for.

Seek a clean piece of land with no targets below. I use All metal mode to do this. Once found do the Ground balance.

What Keith said. You don’t want to balance out real signals. Just the soil.

Let’s make an ‘expert’ series of videos hosted by a guy who knows nothing about detecting. 🤦‍♂️

We asked Scott to present this series exactly for that reason. We have a good balance of knowledge and experience from the team on these videos, from beginners, to experienced users and engineers, and that's what we wanted. Many of our audience are complete beginners and we believe Scott is asking the questions that many want to know. The experienced users amongst the audience will most likely remember what it was like not to know what a ground balance does etc, and we think they'll still learn a lot from the experts in the series.

@@crawfordsmetaldetectors maybe you could look at doing a series for individual machines perhaps? I’ve recently bought a Manticore, it’s my second Minelab machine, but I have to say, the advice given by many on KZfaq, is conflicting at best. Something that addresses this misinformation would be useful to a lot of detectorists looking to take things to the next level. 🤷‍♂️

@@adamclaxton8622 Hey Adam, we're currently working on some stuff for the Manticore so please ensure you're subscribed. And you are right, there is a lot of conflicting information out there. The main thing we would say about the Manticore, or any detector for that matter, is that there is no, 'one size fits all' setting. Many on KZfaq state they have the 'best settings' and it's a load of old tosh. The machine needs setting for each different environment. Keep poised, it might be a month or so, but we have something coming.
