Mingus Mill | Mingus Creek Trail and Cemetery | Great Smoky Mountains

Mingus Mill and Mingus Creek Trail are located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Not far from Cherokee, NC this hike will take you to an old cemetery and back down to the Mingus Grist Mill. This is a great day hike in the Smokies, and it is not too difficult. The terrain is relatively tame but there is some elevation gain as you get closer to the cemetery.

Thanks. It is a nice trail to escape the crowds. Not any major majestic views of the mountains, just a tranquil walk in the woods.

The first cemetery sign is now missing. Keep to the right at the split (12.21.21).of the Land and Sea trail.The first graves date back to 1815. This grave site has a very interesting history as those buried were slaves owned by Mingus. We counted 42 grave markers. There are coins on top of each marker to pat the ferrymen to take the deceased to the promised land. Also along the way you will see the US Park Rangers gun range. Your correct a very private hike and beautiful country. We saw only a single hiker and a fly fisherman along the way.

You are correct bill . I'm a direct desendant of the Mingus family. One of my grandfather's that was a slave had a child with Mr minguses daughter. His name was Charles Mingus and that's basically all I know as of right now.
