The problem is in the United States at least 56 mph is essentially a useless speed to test that. It certainly allows you to compare perhaps to other countries. But nobody drives 56 mph. I would prefer to see a highway test at a normal highway speed or do both tests ideally. Out here in Central Texas you better go 85 miles per hour or you're going to get run over. That changes the situation significantly.

@@kens97sto171 Bjorn does a 120kph test too (75mph). 85mph is usual here in France for example with our speed limit 80mph. I could get up to 150miles of range in winter at these speeds with my Model 3 SR+, which is great. Have to stop charging for 20min every 1h45. 55mph is anyhow a good average for a commuter car, which that Mini is.

@@fabriziom Yeah I know the Bjorn does a high-speed test also. Although I tend to see more of the low speed test generally. my point with the mini is that it's not the best overall car for the general public. In the United States generally speaking people want a vehicle that can do everything including a long road trip. Which at this point you could obviously do on the east and west coast north and south as Out of Spec Motoring mentioned. But if you wanted to do cross-country trips east to west you're going to run into some difficulties at least for now. Most of the center of the country the charging stations are about 120 miles apart, and at higher speeds you probably won't make it in the mini. The car is very well priced I will say they got that right, it looks great and has some great features, But right now you can also buy a Chevrolet Bolt EV for even less $25k aprox. Because they are significantly discounted. To me that's the better overall commuter car it's about the same size but has much more interior room a better range and a decent charging curve also at least in the 2020 model.

@@kens97sto171 I agree that for US it may not be the best car that can do it all. I believe this car is a perfect fun to drive commuter, but not much more. It can do road trips but charging every hour is a bit cumbersome. Not for every day . The Bolt EV is a far more capable EV but it's not as fun to drive nor as good looking. So it's actually good news there's more choice in the 25-30k$ range !

I agree, but for me, an EV like this with a range of only 110 miles would only be good enough as a local runabout car for me, limited to the Wasatch Front area. Once you get below 100 miles, I wouldn't even trust the car to be able to leave Salt Lake County and have a high enough state of charge to be able to get me home without running out of power. Aging Wheels did a range test on a 2013 Wheego Life (named as such because it uses a lithium iron phosphate battery) and it claimed a range of 100 miles, with him getting about 85 or so; that was likely because he drove that Wheego Life as any normal sane person would in the middle of summer (air conditioner on at full blast in sport mode). At such a low range, I would begin to have trust issues even getting me to the nearest grocery store. In these insane times with COVID-19 going around, though, that would not be nearly as much of an issue with stay-at-home orders active in many jurisdictions. However, I come away from this video thoroughly impressed at this Mini Cooper SE's performance with an absolute maximum possible range of 132 miles against an EPA estimated 110 miles.

I'm with you on that it needs more range. If you live in the city it's fine but if do hyw miles like these guys did which I do BMW/ Mini needs to get their range up to compete with the Bolt Kona and Niro. Especially on the Mini Countryman SE ALL4 I would love to have that with Bolts 259 mi. range. Just get rid of that hybrid system and give me 259- 300 miles and I'll be in the showroom tomorrow. 😉

I think you need to get to 200 miles. That way, people can drive for two hours comfortably, then recharge. I get that daily commutes aren’t two hours, but I’d like to be able to make a day trip in this thing once/month, and two hours is a nice range before a charge break. Minis are a blast to drive, so I hope BMW gets serious about this electric mini in the next version.

ChitFromChinola My car has similar range to the Mini and short road trips are no problem with fast charging, I can easily do a few hundred miles with minimal planning. In my daily use I rarely ever drop below 50-60% even though I only charge it to 90% every night. Like I said, you guys feel like you need more range but I think it’s likely that you’d realize you don’t. Batteries are expensive, in order to be cheap the range might be what people need instead of what think they want. 100 miles or so is perfect for anyone unless they’re taking cross country trips regularly. Trust me, I used to be in the same boat as you guys until I bought a PHEV. Long range EVs were expensive at the time so I figured I’d wait until their prices came down, but I almost never used the engine in my PHEV with 40 miles or range so I ended up replacing it with a BEV with 100 miles of range, I couldn’t be happier.

I'm with you oisiaa. My model 3 lights are some of the brightest I've used. But I did just get an X7 loaner and was blown away. I'm more than happy with the Tesla lights, except the auto high beams, they are more like strobe lights

@@OutofSpecMotoring KZfaqr Eric White Tesla Secrets has a Long range S (373 miles of original range) but not the most recent Plus version. He was able to get 258 Wh/Mi on his way to work and back, about 190 miles. I would imagine Long range Plus will be even more efficient.

Obviously it’s not an exclusive city slicker as we made it to NC and could have gone to Miami however I agree if you road trip often having a larger battery is nice. Also stops should be closer to 25 minutes. It definitely wouldn’t work for me as an only car but that’s because I do 80k+ per year

I’m happy to see the competitions in the sector and it’s good for people that seldom ever leave the home range area but I couldn’t imagine driving from North Jersey to South Jersey for summer trips to the shore on the weekends and have to charge on the way. Every weekend. Every leg of the trip. That would get old quick! Honestly I’d like to see more of a collaborative effort to get the CCS chargers working with Teslas so you don’t have to buy the crazy expensive and out of stock Chademo ones. Either way thanks for the video, always excited to watch them... Now if the Mini had a ~200 mile range option, that would be enough to make me look at it seriously.

With massive reliability costs and fails.. and have high maintenance costs. Mini is always bottom of the list on our reliability ratings.. along with a BMW and Mecedes.

Spark EV is fantastic for what it is. I’ve owned a 2015 for just over a year and put about 9000 miles on it in the Denver area. Below 45F, expect around 50 mi of range if using HVAC. With warmer weather 70+ miles is easily achievable. Even crazier, because the gear ratio is low at 3.87:1, it still gets over 5 mi/kWh at 60-70 mph. The torque is amazing and you can get wheel spin at 45 mph...but, GM’s traction control steps in hard when it does detect spin. I still need to instrument it, but I’m pretty sure it’s quicker to 60 than the 7.2s GM claims now that it’s on something better than the hockey pucks they called tires. The interior is pretty spartan...a big reason I have a MINI SE on order. I use the Spark as my daily driver and have other cars for long distance cruising. I’d originally bought it as a test to see if I enjoyed driving EV as it was so inexpensive...I paid around $8k out the door.

You need to watch the Spark review on the channel TRY to HELP you. He does an extremely good job. Its way better than the one done by Alex on Autos or anybody else for that matter!

You have to understand that the car tapers hard up top. 80% was only like $4-5 charging by the minute encourages drivers to leave once their vehicle has tapered. Although I do believe in charging by the kWh

I do long shifts at work and could drive for free most of the time, even on 110 (but only with really efficient ones). Would cost me less than 2 dollars to juice up the Mini at home b/w Nov and May.

Also i do like the car but its kind of insane how a model 3 dual motor can get 350 miles going 90km/h while being 1000lbs heavier and making double the power but getting equal efficiency to the mini. Goes to show how impressive the tesla is. I wish they'd put a better battery in this, my mom would love it but the closest fast chargers are 200 miles away and winter obviously decimates the range too.

Don’t the older bolts only charge at 55kW? Plus it’s not a premium car. I agree the bolt is great and has way more range and space - but I would rather live with the MINI everyday than the bolt, a much nicer place to be.

@@OutofSpecMotoring 55kw to 56%. If you want a premium car but most people with a EV just want it to work and work well and cost as little as possible to own. A 4 door car that holds 4 adults comfortably and is more efficient seems like a better option. On that Test you just did the Bolt would have gotten well over 300 miles likely closer to 320-330 miles on 60kw battery.

That’s a stretch and everyone will be miserable. I’ll happily be burning electrons as fast as I can - and then finding sustainable sources to charge from when convenient. Few people buy these cars to save the planet, it’s just a nice by product.

Totally disagree on going back - I’ve owned many R5x MINIs and the F chassis cars are a massive improvement. If they put a big battery and really good tech in this it would have been at least $50k and went only ~200-230 miles probably. Not worth it at that point. I love the price tag on this thing.
