In "Double Play II", Uncle Andy returns from prison to re-open another sports collectibles shop in Taryl's shop. After the intro and before the ending, Taryl goes over what it takes to get this Echo mini rototiller running again. This is a small 2-stroke tiller with a Zama carburetor. So sit back, laugh and learn a thing or 2 with the master himself, Mr. Taryl Dactal. And as always, There's Your Dinner!!

I love this channel, always great information, and procedures. I get a few easy cases, but more than my fair share of bigger problems. A gentleman gave me a power washer, he said he thought it had bad gas. When I checked it out, it had no compression, I checked the valve adjustment, fine. Pulled the head (OHV) needed a valve job. I see guys get mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, and just need a few adjustments and they work fine. I get the stuff that needs coils, and carburetor work. I enjoy working on them though, and when I get done they run great. However, I have a good many that just needed minor adjustments. So I'm good.

Worked great and results were so much better than just throwing seed and covering w/ soil. I guess it aerated the ground too. If you're on the fence w/ buying one of these cultivators.... pull the trigger!! You'll be glad ya did. ✌️👍 Thx Taryl. Good info.

It is so easy and cheap to find a knock off carb on Amazon these days, but I really prefer to rebuild the originals when possible. Just look at the casting marks and machining on the ZAMA carbs, it is far an above the ones I have gotten from Amazon. Thanks for all the tips Taryl!

I had a herd of Volkswagens in the 1990s. Yeah, had a lot of fun. Learned everything about them. Hey, they were all junk when I got them... Already half buried in the grave. But i resurrected all of them. I learned how to keep them alive, road worthy, and even stepped to building a few "race" motors: custom casted pro-modified heads, Engel Cams, 4-Tuned exhaust, Weber 48IDAs, high performance Demello cranks, yadda-yadda... It didn't happen in two steps. More like a 3 years journey. Because I started from scratch: I just returned from 4 years of hut-two-three--four...US Army. So i got good at tuning(stock) engines... Pretty much mastered the Solex, Weber, Dellorto, and Kadron induction systems. Well, I learned that them 25-30 year old engines and carbs(especially) get old and wore out. But they still run! And after you have the cases remachined, rebuilt and even replace a bunch of stuff with NEW parts, you have a great vehicle. Nothing else like dumping the throttle on two 48IDAs! DaaaaWooosh! You could hear them toilet bowls flush. Then i purchased a '89 IROC-Z, with the L98(350-V8, Bosch TPI Fuel Injection...). Gobbs of torque! ...But now I had to learn fuel injection...! "Just because ." Well, after 3 years of owning the IROC...I only had to have the injectors flushed ONE TIME! IT NEVER BROKE DOWN! So I have a small stable of Stihls now. Learning about them Zama carbs... an entirely different mode of carburetion. It's all about setting the "base idle": rpm, idle mixture and timing. And cleaning that dang spark arrestor screen. Them yard machines work in a dusty dirty environment!

Thanks, Taryl for education to ALL VIEWERS, for 2-cycle carb knowledge. Same atmospheric pressure, gravity logic as 4 cycle engine carbs, but a bit different methodology of using them. We all need this, folks, as the world is full on sitting, non-working small motor 'stuff'. I redo generators, all aspects. BE safe, folks !.

I had to rebuild the carburetor on my Mom's Mantis tiller with the Zama carb and had the check valve in the main jet leaking and you have to pull the main jet out to replace the check valve. The guy at the lawn mower shop didn't carry it and I had to order it from Zama. The guy said the carb would never be right if I replaced the check valve but I managed to change it and the tiller ran smooth when I finished. If the check valve in the main jet is leaking you won't be able to get the tiller to idle properly. Zama had a good description on their web page on how the carb works and how to check things.

I've pulled those check valves out before with a wood screw, and the bigger main jet check valve can be driven straight through into the carb throat and removed... but it's still usually better off to replace the carb by the time you figure in shop rate, especially if the carb still doesn't work right and end up being replaced anyway.
