trench along your swale line with a trencher like this and backfill with dolomite or cat litter to form a impermeable subteranian wall and it will help your ground retain the water it absorbs reducing your irrigation needs and adding to your wells water table; fabulous.

I saw a guy cutting surface roots that cracked a driveway. I’ve used a gas powered edger with a new blade to cut narrow trenches. I cut one path, used a long handle triangle to clear loosened dirt, and cut a second time a bit deeper. The PVC pipe safety cover is a smart idea.

cool invention, but that looks like it would only work in the sandiest of soil. even small rocks would stop you dead in your tracks. i do alot of trenching so i like the concept, and might try it, but the majority of trench jobs i do, end up hitting rocks, bricks, roots, bicycles, glass bottles, and everything else under the sun.. maybe thats just Massachusetts? and also, Cat5E cable is NOT rated for direct burial.

Did they say the chains were expensive and they supposedly wear-out fast? Is it cost effective, that’s the real question...I need to burry 1-1/4” PE Gas Line down 8”. I’m using a Veneer Mini-Skid Track with a purpose built Trencher, it does 4” wide, 4’ deep. Too much equipment for most jobs. Tracks love grass, homeowners don’t.

Direct burial? It might be, until the frost punctures or cuts the cable with sharp stones. After all the trouble to make a 12 inch deep slot in the lawn, put in a plastic well pipe as a protective conduit and include a pull string so you can put more wires in later if you need to. The hardest part is cutting the sod. That is really tough going with a shovel. I did this to run a line to my backyard satellite dish 20 years ago. Used a 120 volt Craftsman 7-1/2" circular saw to cut the sod. Lifted out with a flat shovel and then trenched 3" wide with a hand trowel. Sucked a string the 100 feet of 1-1/2" well pipe with a golf ball sized chunk of mattress foam tied to the end with a shop vac on the other end. Took about 1/2 a second to install the string. That was used to pull in a strong pulling twine which then pulled in a number of cables. Have had no troubles with this run in 20 years.
