As someone that regularly paints armies with hundreds of models, the quick advice I can give you from the limited view we see of your process is to stop worrying so much about going outside the lines. It's a tough hurdle to grasp when you spend years trying to gain better brush control by painting in the lines, but order you operations with the air brush dark to to light and don't be afraid to jump back and forth between stages, and you really should worry less about over spray. Over spray is usually a good thing by the end as it adds additional layers and depth to the model. Nobody recognizes over spray through washes and highlights. Also switch to oil washes and use rattle can varnish for save points.

Hey Scott! Fellow speed painter here, a tip with metals is to use the Vallejo Metal Color series for airbrush and apply them with a brush, they are thin and covers extremely well, it has saved me a ton of time when doing chainmail and guns. They even cover white and yellows quite well. They literally eat your brushes though so use the synthetic cheap brushes.

Really nice to see someone of your skill level showing their limitation so that it shows that beginners, like myself, not to die in a ditch when it feels like it is taking ages or when we run up against bumps in the road. Love the videos where you show how you handle mistakes and slip up as I find that this the most frustrating part; feeling like I should be immediately better after every brush stroke.

Actually I think it was a pretty good effort Scott, considering you tried to paint this to a high standard and even put time into thinking and writing down your process. At the same time, I'd like to make a suggestion for a followup video that may be a bit more in the spirit of real life armypainters; Project: 2400p Infantery-horde, non elite, fantasy army (Empire, Skaven, O&G, Vamps or such...) for 8th ed pre-end times warhammer, so max 25% lords. Prep: No, we don't want to see any moldlines and all gaps get stuffed with greenstuff. Paintlevel: Every part of the model painted with at least base, shade and highligt. All belts, pouches, boots, beards, jewelry and eyes painted with other colors than the uniform/clothes/armor. All units have banners and these are painted with individual unit markings. Consistency: This is an army, not a rag-tag band of mercenary fighters. That means there are uniforms with a common theme throughout all the units. It doesn't have to be identical, but there should at least be a common theme. Bases: Earth, rocks and flock or static grass (flowers are optional). Painted, that means No shortcuts by just dropping natural materials on there. Movement trays: Oh yes, with the edges done in the same style as the bases. Difficulty level increase: Any time you sit down and actually paint, you have to do this as if you had a normal dayjob. That means you keep doing your 8 hours a day with the youtube- and podcast-stuff and only then may you spend time on this project. Further difficulty increase: Not many people have a setup like yours with a dedicated hobby space. All painting must therefore be done at the kitchen table with only a portable lightsource, and if you ever want to use an airbrush you may only do so while your wife is screaming at you to keep the noise down and hitting you with a pillow in the head every 2 minutes. Hard. There is no love while airbrushing. Difficulty level reached: Now, you didn't think you would get to work in peace, did you? To simulate real-life conditions for the average armypainter, every other time you sit down to work on this project, 2,2 small children around the age of 3-6 will be having some sort of meal at the same table you are sitting at. I dont need to give further instructions regarding this. They know what to do... And now for the kicker: Timeframe: Not as such. All you have to do is to finish the army and play 1 game with it before you die from old age. That's it. Good luck, have fun and remeber to post updates!

Its impressive what you got done in such short time and I think its probably for the better that you didnt succeed, after all this epic army will get the time attention to detail it deserves. I get that such challenges are a good motivator to chip away at the pile of shame but hey you got the like a third/half of the painting done and personally I find that even more motivating to finish up than a blank canvas aka fully unpainted model. Keep up the good work, cant wait for the next video!

I think the biggest thing that would have helped you is doing more with your airbrush, and masking. Black hair? Airbrush it? Little piece of cloth? Airbrush it. A little bit of over spray from those details is easy to clean up and it saves you times. Masking your dragon might have then some time, but it’s less time to squish some silly putty in the details than brush paint it and you can airbrush without fear. Also you get the super satisfying feeling of peeling it off and seeing your pretty paint job!

Paint colors from light to darker and end with black or dark brown and even over painting is not an issue. Highlights with a drybrush or quick brushwork using the model texture remives the tedious part and boom, painted model. Great work and humility... now finish that army!
