In this video I make a miniature abandoned hallway that’s been flooded with water. To create the reflections I use mirrors as the floor!

Wonderful stuff! If that were a modern horror movie, the camera would crawl along the corridor, and just as it got to the end room with the chair, the door to that room would be slammed shut by invisible hands. It's a beautiful model. I used to go urbexing, and I know exactly what you are talking about.

Stories are the way to go and you did a nice job with it in this video! I've been working on a similar thing, but occasionally will break away from the story to call out a few items or techniques, or I'll sometimes just point out the crafting materials with text so that the dialog doesn't break stride. The mirrors really look great and totally sell the water effect. Excellent leap of imagination on that. I too have been playing around with moving lights in my final glamour shots, but nothing as bold as what you did here. The light and shadow effect through the doors is beautiful. I need to get my hands on some of those little lights! Tres cool! Excellent work, Nic!

At first I thought this was going to be the famous chair scene from Session 9. Have you been to places that weren't fully abandoned? I heard stories of urban explorers who found evidence that homeless people were living in those places but didn't actually encounter them. Have you ever spent a night in one of those places? I once read a story about a group who spent the night at some creepy hospital while exploring. I don't think I'd have the guts to do it...

Yes that happens! I spent the night at an abandoned asylum once when filming my documentary. It was cold!

I completely agree with your notion of 'beauty in decay' :) one thing that is missing with the implementation of the mirror is that the mirror's reflection of the area is TOO perfect. Even with still water the reflection loses a degree of detail and color due to some light passing through the surface. I know it would be tougher to pull off and likely more pricey but building a plexy or thick masking tape "dam" around the area and pouring a few mililiters of clear resin across the entirety of the hall would work wonders for that film like realism. As well it will better show the mud/particles strewn around slightly submerged rather than all looking like they are resting on a solid surface. Heck you could even make/use tiny leaves strewn in and floating/sinking in the "water". Also, for a bit of fun, using that new light, doing silouette cut outs of "something" off cam in the doorways would be right fun and intrigueing. especially if it shows just for a few split seconds.. hehe.

The problem with the mirror is the gap in the reflection caused by the thickness of the glass. But it did out great anyways! This set has so many possibilities of lighting combinations. The red room with the chair looked kind of evil!

I explored a very similar place in St. Louis, City Hospital, when it was still up and felt the same way. The mirrors are nice for reflectivity but want a bit of floor to show through. I wonder if a scrim suspended out of shot from the roof would dull the reflection and create that effect. Alternatively it might not be as noticeable if the debris on the floor had color variation and staining from rising and falling water, especially where it touches the mirror. Still very amazing with the simple approach.

You always do fantastic work. I've seen all of your videos.. This is the first criticism I've had for you. The mirrors are cool, but only resin is going to give you the water affect you want. Probably a base thin layer of resin, then lay in debris, and a top layer. You are so talented though. I hope you know I mean it with love. 💜

Like always, great job and storytelling, but I have to be honest, I didn't like using the mirrors to reflect the water. We could see dust resting on the glass, which took away the illusion of water. Could you photograph it twice more, one time with water and another time using a water effect product, to compare which way looks better for future projects?

Six days ago, a water main under repair broke in my underground condo parking garage . Dumped 380,000 gallons of water that took two fire engines hours to pump back out. My car was against the down grade far wall, which acted as a backstop to steer the torrent over and into my 2019 Honda with 6800 miles on it. I couldn`t come downstairs from the 12th floor for a look see for two days because the elevators instantly went out when the lobby filled with 18 inches of water.. Could you possibly build a diorama of THAT for my insurance company?!? Thanks in advance...
