NightFlyyer

15 жыл бұрын

I can catapult and launch Mini Helis, Avions, Sukhois and other light planes from my Miniature Aircraft Catapult Prototype.
When Jeff showed up at my door with this "Dollar Store" boat and challenged me to put a motor on it, I decided to make it much more than a motorboat!
Here (with trials and errors, to reach success) is my USS NightFlyyer.
Stay tuned for more fun and unique rc equipment from Mr. Herbert's Science Class.

Self-inflating locator for sinkings. About 55 years ago, I had a model sailboat, about 2' long with a main and jib. The rudder could be fixed before launching, but some way or other (I was 7 or 8) I took an old toy walkie-talkie receiver - the kind that had a "beep" sounder - and used the 9V from the "beep" in the receiver to run a little toy motor, rigged to move the rudder. Primitive, but it actually worked. One day, I took the sailboat to a real lake, and promptly sank it when I tried to tack - conditions were not ideal. I did eventually find it, but wading in the lake was cold, even in summer. Then I had an idea. I knew from kitchen-chemistry experiments that adding water to baking powder (not baking soda) would produce gas with some pressure behind it, if done in a container with a narrow neck. So, I built a locator buoy. I took a small plastic medicine bottle, filled it about 1/2 full of baking powder, and put a balloon over the neck, wrapped tight with a rubber band. The other of the bottle had a hole to let water in. When water came in and mixed with the powder, the balloon would inflate somewhat. The thing would float to the water's surface, trailing a thin string. The problem was how to keep the water _out_ unless the bottle was submerged. The answer was to put a salt tablet over the hole, held in place with with LePage's Rubber Cement around the edges. The string was wrapped loosly around the bottle, with one end tied to the boat's bow (out of the way). When the boat sank again, it was well off shore and out of sight. However, the salt tablet dissolved, water entered the plastic bottle, mixed with the baking powder, which generated gas (CO2, I think) and inflated the balloon. The balloon rose to the surface, trailing the string tied to the bow. And *presto* - there was the marker showing where the model had sunk. It was simple to row out in a dinghy with a weighted hook and line, and retrieve the sailboat. This crude system worked well several times. Later on, an adult told me the idea could never work. Well, I'd already recovered the boat from several sinkings with the improvised marker, so I shut up, but concluded experiment trumped opinion. The balloon didn't blow up hard, but it didn't need to. All it had to do was inflate enough to rise to the surface, trailing a bit of string. None of the lakes were very deep out to 150-200 yards from shore. I'm sure there are much better, more expensive and easier to use locators available now for model boats, 55 years on. But at age 8, I thought it was a good invention. It used household materials and it worked, and so did the job.
