I love how the world of audio engineering is so similar to the world of RF engineering. If it exists in the world of RF, there is probably an audio equivalent out there (waveguides, horns, anechoic chambers , etc...). Just goes to show how a wave is a wave, and whether its electromagnetic or pressure wave, they still obey physics in much the same way!

Love your channel. The 90's was my heyday for car audio. For some time I played with horn loaded compression drivers for front stage, and they could be made to work to pretty good affect, providing good staging and imaging, and carrying the range from about 800Hz to 20Khz. It took a lot of tuning, both physical and signal, to get good performance. Would love to see you take a crack at modeling something new and maybe reviving or reintroducing the concept with your own twist.

Hey man i love your videos and im just geting into car audio because of you, i was wondering how sound travels through the box and if it matters where you place the sub, like the top of the box or side, im wondering if the sub perpendicular to the port will sound better or will one parallel to the port, will it cause the sound to bounce around the box or will it still find its way into the port?

Hexi, I would love to see a video talking about omni-directional speakers since they are very rarely used and even talked about these days but they can sound amazing given the right engineer, drivers, enclosure, and design. It really bugs me that there is no market for Omnis, even for surround applications. You only see them on $10-20 tiny bluetooth speaker, old ones from the 70s, or on the really high end. But, there is this company OHM who makes the OHM Walshes that make incredible omnies that are very nice but extremely expensive. I never even see omnies in the low-mid budget range if at all, even ones with just 1 full range driver firing up into a cone that would be great for surround speakers or stereo to fill a room. These speaker manufacturers usually tend to do the Triangular shaped Dipole/Bipole design with a driver on each side fired 90' degrees from each other and a tweeter to try and spread the sound. Id like to see a video on your take on omni-directionals. Maybe a DIY with a 4-6' Coaxial full range driver, or a 2 way with Woofer and tweeter design for a stereo setup. Something to that nature? Especially since you 3D print, you could create the nice coned shape, "I dont know the correct name for it" that reflects the sound that are so hard for DIY builders to make. Maybe an idea for a future vid? That's my issue, I could make an enclosure, get the driver, etc) but get that cone shape its hard to make and source. I dont know all the math to design and choose all the right parts but again, your thoughts on them would be awesome. Thanks. I this love the channel!

How does this compare to the Dayton audio omnimic v2? Also when I look at the specs of the umik v2 I can’t find it’s frequency range. Does it go below 20hz?

I love watching your videos and some of the comments make me lol. Have you seen or heard of the new range of Yamaha sub boxes. Is there much effect in a shaped port with twists to change air flow. Is this something you could further test or dismiss ? Obviously the smooth flow of air makes all the difference. so size and shape matters. But does adding flutting and twists (like threads) do anything

Question, just found your channel and my first impression is that you are an authority in your field. Recently I’ve been upgrading my audio setup and one new features for me is Dirac Live. Do you recommend the UMIK-1 or UMIK-2, price is not that important, just what is the best practically (using MacOS)? Also I need to take multiple measurements, how do I orientate the microphone to the speaker?

Does anyone know the best place to buy this mic in the UK? Also, the best/simplest software to use this mic to tune the frequency response of the speakers I am building? (preferably free). I am not a pro, but an enthusiastic amateur.

Duuuude, now you mention the words that matter about differences in mics to an extent. YOU made me spend money I got reserved for other things in order to get a clearer (if possible) picture of how sound behaves in my car, my living room, then a few years in roll you say THIS. Your videos made me buy the DATS v3 and 1st gen UMIK and learned REW. I'm already 1 calendar year in testing 4th and 6th order bandpass prototypes in 8" and 10" subs. I did scavenge all existing vintage equipment for parts my family had. My parents want to throw me out of the apartment, that I inherited, since in their words "we gave you a home and want grand kids, but you turned this place into a science lab". Great work....and here's the real question - Is it worth it to upgrade from UMIK 1 to REV 2, given that I'm making some side money on car audio calibration (don't ask how I accomplished that with half analog signal and what-not) and some mid range clients in home audio who have more options but are stingy AF? ;) I'm still dreaming of a mini dsp medium to major unit, even the large ones, but I also have to pay bills. :) This is still not my profession, but I have invested 16 years of trial and error and several thousands $$$ already, just because I love music! .....and seek perfection without selling body parts! ;) Holla from Eastern Europe. :)

This is again a question for you, if my understanding is correct these measurement mics are great at recording sound with minimal distortion. But nobody recommend a measurement mic for voice recording, what may be the reason?

With Same settings on master Volume and mic gain in Dirac,the Umik one is at -18db and the Umik 2 at around -30db . Is that normal? I feel,that the Umik 2 measures better (Levels are more balanced) in my Atmos Setup of Speakers and Overall it sounds little "clearer" after calibration.

there may be an error in your math. theoretically ideal 32 bits analog to digital converter may give you up to 1.76 + 32*6.02 = 194 dB of dynamic range. this excludes any noise or non-linearity of the microphone or its analog front end. the ADC itself usually has less effective bits than its ideal bits due to thermal and flicker noise. 194 dB DR may seem like a lot, but any smallest impairment may greatly decrease it. maybe they use a sigma-delta and reshape the noise floor somehow - need to check the exact ADC to know for sure. anyway, that floating point notation and 1200 dB DR is missing the point

ill press X to doubt the 32bit, bit depth on the ADC. Getting true 32 bit dynamic range on an ADC is very very difficult. It can be done, but usually requires metrology grade voltage references, and chips costing as much as some cars.

Wait a sec. I hear people hyping 32-bit gear, but... i struggle to see how it can work and be useful, if real mic preamps massively struggle to deliver more than 20 bits worth of dynamic range? As do microphones of any kind.

I'm all about resolution but honestly things are getting out of control IMO. Phone screens with 4k resolutions? Is it a genuine benefit or a marketing ploy to sell sell sell. High bit depth and sampling has it's place where a signal is going to be processed later in the chain but for this application it's as you say - overkill.

32 bit 192 khz will do nicely on paper with impressive numbers so what. Compared to that, an analog Studer A820 studio master recorder looks terrible. But no person will ever say that a Studer sounds bad. So numbers don't say much.

I can see sbir and standing waves in your "anechoic" measurements. There's reasons why professionals and experts in psychoacoustics tell you not to eq above the Schrodinger frequency. But you do you.

Your "anechoic" chamber isn't anechoic at all. The foam you have on your walls affects only the very high frequencies. So you're better off doing your measurements outside, in the open, far from any walls or surfaces than in that room for low frequency measurements.

I'm not sure where you are getting this notion of 32-bit floating point but it's incorrect. There is no FP audio standard. The mic transmits 32-bit linear PCM (integer quantization).
