As owner of Sony X900h ("55" 2020) 4k 120Hz model (FALD).. which costs $1200 back in early 2021 I can say Sony TVs are superior overall, especially for 90 series & above.. But their price is outragoues.. X90L (65 in) is $1800 in middle east, while TCL 745C (65 in) is like $900 Videos always show cheap U.S prices.. while Euro, Asia, Africa..etc have always have higher prices for Sony I don't care what Sony could bring to the table as long their prcices are 2x, I won't buy from them again

Great video, I thought you explained the misconception of Mini LED always being better than regular FALD TVs quite well, I saw this first hand when the QN90A and Q90T were placed next to each other the Q90T showed more detail and slightly more blooming but the QN90A crushed details to hide blooming and get closer to acting like an OLED in most scenes I thought the Q90T held up better because important details got lost on the QN90A. Also its more about the algorithm than the the amount of zones and you covered that very well.

Q90T was d BEST. Its like ART. QN90A was nice tho. I did NOT have issue with it when I saw in store. Maybe u could try to tweak it. Seeing something in store is never accurate!!! I saw Hisense U8G 65” beside QN90A, LG CX, SONY A90J….the CX A90J looked AWEFUL AWEFUL AWEFUL, but Hisense LOOKED WORSE--at fisrt. I had to hunt down the employee to ask him to change to --STandard mode. He had on --Energy Saving mode. N back light on 💯, black level(brightness) set to 50%. And then i found d Samsung QN90A. I moved around its setting, it looked Great. N d doughy guy in store they were --really agreesive so bitchy that I went straight asking for U8G n QN90A. He kept berating the technology n brand, n kept trying to pulllme to look at OLED, n LG QNED. Ughhhhhh. 😮 U might want to re visit the store, get remotes first. Cuz they really are trying to promote LG QNED(cuz they a re not selling). N some other OLED (they get much higher commission).

If TV manufacturers were serious about producing LCD TVs that catch up with OLED displays, they would be implementing and improving the "Dual Cell" technology that Hisense introduced in 2021. In the Hisense U9DG Dual Cell TV, a 1080p black and white panel was placed behind the 4K RGB panel. This functionally provided the TV with over 2 MILLION "local dimming zones", and as the tests in the RTINGS review demonstrated, the results were spectacular. The Dual Cell TV nearly equaled OLED displays in Contrast, Black Uniformity, Blooming, and Wide Viewing Angle. The Dual Cell TV was discontinued (probably because it cost more than other Hisense models) but this LCD technology has the potential to be a highly competitive rival to OLED TVs.

QUESTION: There is a a comparison between the Hisense UK7 model vs the Sony X90L online. In this comparison, there is a Starfield test. The UK7 model does not suffer from the "Too Black" problems the TCL QM8 suffers from in the FOMO video. In fact, the U7K actually has superior blacks that are deeper than the Sony X90L while simultaneously displaying more of the white stars - similar to the way an OLED is superior to the X90L. Can you confirm this, Fomo in the specific test you show here at the end of your video?

Mini LED can tend to crush a lot of detail in favor of getting an inky image. Sony's approach is subtle. Sony isn't the brightest or blackest, but there's more information in the image, so the result is an image that stands out and has more depth.
@michaelbeckerman7532

Exactly correct. And, just as Sony will always tell you, they make their design decisions with the creator's intent in mind. They want you to see everything that the creator of the content wanted you to see. This is one reason why Sony's consistently provide a much better overall viewing experience than their competitors - regardless of the content you are watching.
@michaelzoran
@michaelzoran 10 ай бұрын
@@michaelbeckerman7532 Sony needs to start making decisions based on the fact that it is the intent of the creator for people to be able to see their content without being forced to take out a loan on their home in order to buy a TV. Sony's products are ridiculously overpriced - the point that it represents price gouging. TCL and Hisense offer similar performance for prices that are much better. This is the benefit of competition in sales. Sony is no longer a sales leader, because of the terrible prices of Sony's TV sets.
@lancealex382

Honestly oleds have the same issue, there's still crushed blacks too often but with certain content the black contrast can look stunning and you don't get that with the balanced 'sony' approach you allude to'. That said, there is absolutely a place for this balance and I can understand why people opt for it.

@michaelzoran
@michaelzoran 10 ай бұрын
@@lancealex382 OLEDs have a couple problems. First, the "Burn-In" risk is very real - regardless of what anyone says. If you watch a lot of CNN or Fox News all day, you will eventually end up with "Burn-In" from those colors always being in the same spot. Second, the "Fast Response Times" of OLED helps the videogames with "High Framerates," such as First-Person Shooters and Racing games. However, the "Fast Response Times" of OLED actually has the inverse effect that HURTS the low-framerate movies on Blu-ray, which run at only 24 frames per second. This creates problems with Stuttering, Juddering, and Shimmery in high-speed "Movement" scenes.

I have an LG C8 and a G2, and will probably keep OLED for myself for the foreseeable future. However, I just convinced my parents to upgrade their Panasonic plasma's (one of them is from 2008!) to a set of 75" and 65" X90L's and for them I feel like they will be thrilled. For them I prioritized motion and dark scene details over true blacks, especially since they'll be streaming 100% of their content, to find a budget that made them comfortable. Hopefully they'll be happy, will find out later this week.

Anyway, this and a couple of other videos saying similar things is why the 98" X90L is in my top 3 TVs Im considering, along with the 85" X95l and the 85" Hisense UX which I hope you'll test. So putting price aside, if you were buying a TV for a room with a lot of ambient light (large windows), but no direct sun, would you be more excited to get the 98" x90 because its more than good enough and you get that unbelievable size, or would you want to close the gap even more with the superior, but smaller sized 85" x95l? 🙂

@@birdtj82 LOL let's get this cleared up. I bought the Sony X90L from Best Buy and most importantly, Sony has hated me ever since I posted the X900H VRR fiasco three years ago. Sony has never EVER sent me a TV for review - I've had to buy them all myself. The only TVs ever sent to me for review have been TCL (but not recently, I've also had to buy the QM8 and R646 from Best Buy) and Hisense loaned me the U8K, U7K (both returned). Believe me when I say that I have been Sony's harshest critic (or did you miss my scathing review of the X95K last year, which I also bought) and this is the first time I've liked the entry level X90 model! As far as LG, they definitely don't like me and like Sony, they also do not send me any TVs for review - I've had to buy those too. I welcome loaner TV units for sure, but I always say it as it is because I don't mind buying TVs when I need to.

The issue is cost, it gets exponentially more expensive to up the dimming zone counts supposedly. I doubt we'll ever see an LCD TV with over 900,000 dimming zones tbh. It would either cost more than OLED by a wide margin, or by the time we'd get there, MicroLED TV's would probably be getting cost competitive and readily available, and superior to LCD in every way.
@badpuppy3
@badpuppy3 10 ай бұрын
@@shugo7337 I'm saying it would be a cheaper option to manufacture than direct view MicroLED, especially for future 8K resolutions in TV's 65" or smaller, because they wouldn't have to get the individual LED's so small, but still have a near perceptible contrast. Having 900,000 individual LED's will be a lot easier to achieve than 33 million.

I've been watching a few other channels that have also discussed Sony's X90L as well as their top tier mini LED the X95L and how they out perform most other mini LED TVs even though they both have less dimming zones than most of the competition and it all comes down to their processing and dimming algorithm. Sony revealed just before CES this year that they use their own proprietary tech to better focus their dimming zones as well as better control the gradient of light each zone needs rather than simply being on or off. It's actually pretty cool seeing how it works and because of it they don't need as many dimming zones. Apparently their 2024 mini LED TVs will have an even better version of this tech and some tech reporters that have seen pre-production TVs in action say it rivals current OLEDs in terms of picture quality and deep black levels.

I tried out an LCD TCL and I did the simple white page black text test, and then black page with white text test and it was really bad, as in, it was unusable as a PC monitor. This is the main reason why I splurged and got the OLED, because the white page and black text actually look right, so maybe if you could spare like 5 mins for those two tests and also describe the maximum refresh rate it would be totally awesome!

Great video, and point. But if the Sony had the mini led and dimming zones of the qm8, I would get it in a heartbeat. Yeah, it would be interesting to see how a Sony with 1,000 dimming zones would perform. The X95L seemed to be very close to Sony's reference monitor and it has 480 dimming zones. Doubling that would certainly improve it but I do wonder if you'd be able to see a difference. On the other hand, I do suspect that tripling the X90L's to 240 would produce very similar results to the X95L which is very important for subtitles.

A recent poll found that 50% use subtitles, and I'm not surprised as there are so many articles explaining why dialogue is not clear either by design (looking at you Nolan) or by choice in many movies (looking at all the crappy directors). Also, I would be very curious to see a direct lit or even edge-lit QLED TV compared to one of the new FALDs like the QM8 to see how TVs have progressed over time especially for folks using older TVs, especially a Sony or LG.

@@user-oq4rm5ci9p not with a Sony and an XR Cognitive processor it isn't. Remember, the XR is the most advanced processor of ANY TV you can buy today. A big part of that is because of the software running inside that processor. The better the software, the more accurately you can control the backlighting. What makes Sony so much better at what it does is really its ability to not only bring superior image processing to the table, but also to bring superior backlight control as well. This is why, just like the video shows, Sony is able to "do more with less". Now, if you need more than that, they offer the mini-LED based X93L. And, as you can imagine, with mini-LED's and its approximately 800 local dimming zones (along with the XR processor) it does everything even better still. That TV is almost indistinguishable from OLED displays in many cases.

Samsung miniLED is definitely not "better" - having reviewed the QN90A, QN90B, QN900B, QN95C, I can say that the additional miniLED did not make the Samsung "better". The QN90B had worst contrast and slightly lifted black bars compared to the QN90A - yes, specular highlights were a touch brighter but the compromises were unacceptable. QN95C was definitely improved but only to match the QM8 - this is why the QM8 is my current reference miniLED TV (until next year!). Hisense surprisingly added miniLED to its U6, which was completely unnecessary as the Q7 without miniLED beat both the U6K and U7K. Personally, I believe that a TV does't need miniLEDs unless they have more than 400 dimming zones.

My objective as a reviewer is to match the strength of a TV to YOUR use case. If the flaws I point out is not something you'll ever see, then you win! The QM8 is still my choice for best value HDR TV but the point of this video is to demonstrate what can be done without miniLED (and less dimming zones) - it's obviously not perfect as you saw the raised blacks and blooming of the X90L but the QM8 is still an excellent TV matching the performance of the QN95C more often than not. I think I have watched every video review on U-Tube related to choosing between the Sony X90L, TCL Q7 or QM 8 or the Hisense UK7 or 8 and it is mind boggling, although half the fun. "On paper" I settled on the Sony X90L and went to Costo to buy one. Costco had a much cheaper 65" TCL and Samsung running on either side the of the Sony X90L. No doubt the Sony has a nice picture, but when I stepped back about 15 ft both the TCL and Samsung were noticeably brighter, and incidentally had good pictures. I realized right then and there that despite all the reviews and descriptions about nits by nerds (meant affectionately), that brightness really is important to me. Don't get me wrong, I love spending time researching and watching all the reviews, but man, you just have to go somewhere and watch these TV's side by side if you can. Your eyes may change what your brain may be trying to tell you based on what others have to say! I just ordered a TCL QM 8 ...

I actually watched this from my new Sony X90L. I previously had two TCL Q7'S that buzzed and reached out to you on Twitter (thank you by the way). I originally wanted a QM8 after watching you test it out but they didn't have a 55 inch. I ultimately went back to Sony (I had a Sony 900f after a 900e died just outside of the one year warranty). I've been very impressed with the Sony X90L. It's handling of low bit rate content I imagine is much better than the QM8 which should tip it for anyone watching cable TV which can vary per channel, per show or even per commercial. I do think this year's TCL remote is much more comfortable and the soft buttons are great. I also had a issue with VRR while playing Borderlands 3 on the Q7 that makes me wonder if it is present on the QM8. Turning on VRR for that specific game made it look like nighttime and the colors shifted everywhere when you used the stick. One area I think Sony needs to improve is the game bar. Other companies offer more features with their game bar. Additionally, gamers want gaming TVs with more picture adjustments as it's not always about lower response times for us. But overall, I'm supremely happy that I ended up with the Sony X90L over the Hisense U8K, TCL Q7 and QM8 or even last year's Samsung QN90B that I was considering. I don't see myself leaving the Sony nest for a long time. Lol The color and clarity are the first things you notice.

@@stopthefomo Hi Fomo, thanks for taking the time to reply. Having had the TCL QM8 85" 7 days now I was disappointed because out the box going through a Sony STR AZ ES5000 ES Receiver was the problem. A friend corrected my issues with the TCL. I think you and Brian should , if possible, address issues with up scaling with different Receivers, that most people who buy large Panels would be using for their, Home Entertainment System , will be using. I certainly could use some guidance. By the way, the TCL does not come with a Manual. Do other TVs do?

Ive been looking at the TCL QM8B which from the looks of it all is the same as QM8, MiniLED with FALD, is it any good for £564?

Hey FOMO, since you can’t get your hands on a reference monitor, why don’t you use your phone as a reference guide, since they’re basically calibrated straight out the factory?
@stopthefomo
@stopthefomo 10 ай бұрын
Nope, reference monitors are specifically used/calibrated by Hollywood creators so it would be the only true "reference" - so because movie content creators do not use the phone as a reference, I cannot call it a "reference". Even a "reference monitor" is inaccurate as they only go up to 1000 nits - for content above 1000 nits, it's all subjective and viewer preference really!
@braulioribeiro3897
@braulioribeiro3897 10 ай бұрын
@@stopthefomo So a 14 Pro Max, wouldn’t be accurate to the creators intent in HDR, up to its rated 1600 nits? I’m not saying it should replace a dedicated reference monitor, but wouldn’t it show you if a TV’s gamma curve or color accuracy is off a bit?

You could also throw the Q7 into the discussion. No MiniLED. Amazing contrast. Deep blacks. And I would say less blooming than the X90L. Rtings review will be coming out soon, and I will say it scored very highly with contrast and black uniformity.

Are you saying the Q7 looks better than the QM8?
@MichaelC_22
@MichaelC_22 10 ай бұрын
No. The Qm8 will look better in many ways, but the q7 is no slouch. Qm8 will get much brighter, and colors will "pop" more. However, the contrast in both TVs is similar, and in dark scenes, the q7 will not crush blacks as much as the qm8, for example.@@tomtube1012

Could you please guide me if TCL C845 same as QM8, or very similar regarding picture quality/panel. Thank you!
@stopthefomo
@stopthefomo 8 ай бұрын
Panels are different as the QM8 has more dimming zones. The C845 is a step down from the QM8 but a step above the Q7 (USA). Picture quality should be similar but the QM8 should be a touch brighter with better blooming control (all else being equal) but again all speculation based on hardware specs as we don't have the C845 to compare!

I hope this isn't a dumb question (if it is, sorry) but do you believe that Mini Led's may eventually replace LCD or even QLED TV's the same way that OLED basically phased out Plasma?
@loldatfunny
@loldatfunny 10 ай бұрын
no because it costs more to make mini LED Tvs and most people don't care that much about picture quality so companies will continue to make regular LCD Tvs who will buy TVs for the cheapest possible price. I doubt the production costs of Mini LED will come down enough that companies are willing to mass produce as low end/cheap TVs
@stopthefomo
@stopthefomo 10 ай бұрын
So to be clear, a QLED TV is simply an LCD TV that uses quantum dots in the backlight system with the only difference being that QLED is Samsung's trademark for the quantum dot technology but Hisense also uses quantum dots in its ULED TVs - ultimately, they are all LCD TVs. All premium LCD TVs today (over $800) are using quantum dots in their backlight so essentially these premium LCD TVs are all QLED now!

I think the best of both integrated by Sony would be a killer combination means mini led with 2000 dimming zones and sony algorithms to control it will surely beat oleds.

QN90B is better for gaming but HDR image quality for content watching is similar enough that I'd save money and get thge TCL 845 unless you need slightly better motion settings or low bitrate processing both of which are better on the QN90B.
