Honestly, I'm so happy that you went through with putting up a simple 2022 setup. 2021 was a lot (irl and bujo-wise) and I need my 2022 to be more steady which will be heavily reflected in more minimal spreads. So happy to take inspiration from you!

I so happy you are doing a very basic journal. That is 1 of the things that I like. Please do card making to help yourself keep it simple. I really need a basic journal and you are about the only example, therefore leader, in this. i also like the extras like stamping because it helps me be super simple, but with a touch here and there that just make my journal look professional without turning it into an art project or taking up the valuable time that I am trying to save - ironic isn't it? Love this video.

I also want to thank you for slaying the Comparison Monster and sharing your method for beginning a new year. My sister, who is The Planner Queen, introduced me to your videos last year - and I actually journalled for a good three months while I was recovering from an injury. Then, I had a set back and suspended my efforts. Your 2022 video came up in my queue after I watched your 2021 intro to the system for the third time. Today, I scrolled through maybe 20 videos on the topic until yours came up. Was glad to find you because you were my portal into the system and I knew you stressed simplicity. The addition of using templates, stencils, and colors almost derailed my interest, until I grasped that you're a designer and you have included these as optional. I've been using an 80-sheet, wide-ruled composition book -- which worked for me. I do like graph paper and rounding corners. Hey, I Iike color too! So, I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to help some of us get started with an approach we are familiar with. My youngest brother used "phenomenal" when referring to the prospects for 2022. May you have a productive, prosperous, and phenomenal 2022!

I didn't know these Peerless sheets existed. They're AWESOME! Especially for travel, I'm thinking. Just went over to their site and they're running a very generous flexible coupon sale for the holidays, too, with a lovely note that's worth reading. I love small businesses. Thanks for shoving that internal critic down in the box where he belongs so we could see this. I have a favorite little stick figure cartoon meme that goes like this: - A cake artist carries their creation to a table, where there's already another, fancier cake sitting there. The artist laments that their cake isn't as fancy and showy as the one next to it, and the imposter syndrome comparison monster stuff comes in that they're not good enough, their cake isn't good enough, they shouldn't even bother. - Then a fan/customer/regular joe walks up to the table, sees the uber-fancy cake and our artist's pretty cake, and bursts into joy. "Yay!! TWO beautiful cakes!!" And they're bouncing around like it's the best day ever. You gotta beat that internal critic into submission as often as possible and if it helps, try to look at it from a regular joe's perspective. Us normies out here, we just enjoy seeing you do what you do. There's room for everyone. From the Ryder Carroll pen-only cryptic hieroglyphic symbol spreads, to your creative yet minimal spreads, to Elizabeth's art museum quality spreads. We love 'em all and want to see 'em all, because we like watching people do things that they ENJOY doing and seeing what cool things come out of it. Plus it gives us ideas on pages or sections that we might want to include in our own stuff. {{{HUGS}}}

Never feel like you have to be fancy for people to appreciate what you do. We all have different needs from a bullet journal and frankly sometimes I get tired of all the fancy spreads and stickers and washi tape when all I need is something functional. Also, I used to do a full month at a time, but I’ve changed how I do things and only do them weekly now so I can change things up and try new set ups.

@@markyourpages I was inspired by your video to go totally minimalist this week! Just my stencils and markers and only a few stickers. Last week I went full-on vintage and I’m just as happy this week as I was last week. I really enjoy making my bullet journal a weekly process rather than a monthly one. I have more time to reflect on what works and what doesn’t and also what you said about focusing on short term goals like your food spending. I have things like that in my life that I like to focus on when it matters rather than setting up a whole month in advance. Thanks so much for sharing your process and your set ups and whatnot and I completely forgive you for your slavish devotion to Archer & Olive;) I’m Team LT 1917 120 GSM all the way! Ha ha ha! Although I WILL say that because of your video I’m willing to try the A&O B5! Very intrigued by the idea of all that extra space!!

Another vote for 'glad you posted this' from me - I'm not a creative bullet journalist by any stretch of the imagination and it's nice to see some setups more in the realm of what I can do and what I'd find useful. Even a lot that claim to be minimalist are full of Intense Calligraphy and Intricate Doodles. I love the blue squares 'behind' the headings as a simple way to add some colour. Your video has also made me re-think which pen I'm going to use for my headers too which is a bit of a random take-away but potentially very useful XD

Hey Mark. I can’t thank you enough for talking about the comparison monster rearing it’s ugly head; it felt so deeply relatable. I filmed my first plan with me half way through and then scrapped it, because I honestly felt like it just wasn’t good enough, or worthy enough to share in comparison to others. It’s hard to show up on a social media platform and share something as personal as the inner workings of your journal; but your thoughts here have given me the courage to own who I am and own my style. So thank you so very much!

I'm glad you decided to record this, it is a simple and pretty setup and much more useful than many artistic setups I have seen. You know what I love most about this? That compared to a lot of other Bujo content creators your hands make the B5 look like an A5, I had to skip back and one point to make sure I did not misunderstand and it really is a B5 :) Thanks for talking us through the grid spacing, I have 3 university degrees and work on my PhD but my brain does not compute grid spacing without someone drawing it out for me step by step.

You be you, because you are just fine as you are. I am also moving into an A&O B5 for 2022. I plan for this book to actually cover my entire year in a single volume. And I'm going to be so minimalist this year that all I'm doing each month is a new single color and change the format of my titles. On occasion I might do some embellishment, but really only a tiny bit. I hope 2022 is a good year for you.

i have to say just so you know that i'm in the same club as many here.. no matter how many fancy setups i watch, i mostly never do that kinda thing in my journal, except a little bit for monthly or yearly setups and color coding for important info/headers and trackers. i feel like too much decor takes up my writing space and i take A LOT of notes haha! so i'm glad that you put this out for people like me who feel like their journal performance isn't over the top but is definitely functional... :p Comparison is the killer of Creativity (and productivity)

I'm so glad you went ahead with this video! I just started using a bullet journal in September. I love it and want to continue, but I've been feeling super intimidated about setting up for the new year. I've been feeling like I have to know exactly what I want to include for the whole year before I start. You've reassured me it's ok to start with something basic and build it up as I go along. Thank you!

That is awesome to hear! I felt the same way and was like... no way - figure it out as you go along. That's the fun of it. It just took me a while to come to that realization. Now that I did, I'm good with it and really excited for 2022.

thank you for taking time to explain your grid spacing guide. i’ve watched so many videos on the grid spacing guide but i’ve always been confused and never was really able to get the hang of it. but i definitely feel more confident about it and feel like i understand it way better now. this will definitely save me time in my journal from now on!!

Love your setup. Super glad you did not listen to the monster and filmed this. I enjoy watching more artistic spreads but I'm not going to make them. Your spreads are simple which is more my style (at least it is easier to make something similar) :) Your journal looks awesome!

I might be really late since I just discovered you, but I wish more men in my life will admit that they need a journal to be organized, and I keep telling them to bujo but I get immediately shut down because they think it's too girly to do so since the only thing they know are those monstrous bujo KZfaqrs and their spreads, they don't even bujo yet they are trying to compare themselves to them...most of my early bujo's were abandoned just because of this.

It's all about finding what works for you. I agree that sometimes seeing the overly designed journals turns people off. Even some of my more simplistic spreads are too much for some people - but it think it's best to find the right approach for what you are trying to do. Sometimes it's just an active todo list, or using a method in a blank journal. The best we can do is introduce the ideas to those who might need it.

I think that it's an easy thing to try and do - that's a girly spread or that's for a guy. My goal is more to help other people, regardless of gender to find the ideas and inspiration. Guys are not as visible in the planner community, so this is my approach to stand out a little bit more. But again, I agree we shouldn't gender bullet journaling. It's a notebook at the end of the day, right?
