'You can't declutter into minimalism.' - Golden words. Most people think that minimalism is about how many things you have. No! That is called materialism. Minimalism is NOT about things: it's a different way of living, being and thinking, in contrast to the materialistic world of today.

I didn’t think I was a minimalist, until I heard how people talk about what they own and saw other people’s homes. Not a judgement, you do you. It just made me realize that I live my life VERY differently. A lot of my minimalism has come from having to live within my means (having a baby really changed my mindset on this) AND that my mental health requires a relatively tidy, clean and organized home. Your Instagram and KZfaq channel have helped me feel less alone in this strive for responsible consumption.

1. Let go of "finishing everything on your plate". 2. Let go of "just in case". 3. Make minimalism a habit. 4. Get honest with yourself about stuff and debt and what you're doing and why. 5. Ask: "who am I now and who do I want to be? How will I get there?" 6. Ask: "am I willing to part with 2 or 3 things now to bring this new item into my life?" Note: just because there's space doesn't mean you need to fill it up! 7. Embrace change. 8. Recognize that no one else gives a sh*t about what you're wearing. 9. Recognize that minimalism is not all or nothing, and it doesn't happen overnight. 10. Recognize that this is your journey, and you get to have your own set of rules for what minimalism looks like in your own life.

Re: compliments, I had an ah-a moment when someone complimented pants that I had worn probably 50 times in front of them. But they hadn't noticed until the 50th time. Because, to your point, no one really gives a shit and very few people actually pay any real attention to what we're wearing!

My approach to "just in case" is that if the situation ever did arise, I would simply deal with it then (e.g., rent a dress, borrow an item, etc.). There is always a solution.

I still finish everything on my plate. I love leftovers, but once it's on my plate, I finish it. But, I instead switched to a smaller plate to begin with. That way I put less on it.

I'm no expert minimalist, but I think if you are interested in the lifestyle, these are some useful tips to embrace the concept if minimalism a little bit more and put it into practice...especially if you're a non-minimalist. How do you embrace minimalism?

For me minimalism is having what I need and want in my life and not having things because others have them. The items I have kept during my decluttering and the items I buy now I consider handpicked by me and only me! I want to have things aswell as people in my life that I want to take care of and that I love, not things that just take up my time and waste it (cleaning, organizing etc). You do have a relationship with your things and if they don’t give you joy, why should you keep them in your life?

I am starting the process. I started with my closet. I loved the freedom I experienced the first week or so. Then I noticed a general feeling of angst with the empty closet. I started to journal and discovered this feeling “what if I don’t have enough?” It has been much more of a spiritual and psychological journey! Love the comment that do not have to fill negative space.

I've been a minimalist for a few years now, growing on my journey, and I really enjoyed this video. ❤ P.s. I have a toddler, kids' toys, clothes, normal furniture, and an average 3 bedroom house, and I'm still a minimalist. 😊 It doesn't have to be bare walls and empty rooms!!

I also found minimalism by being an overspending 😳. I had so much stuff that I didn’t need and so much debt that I finally hit a wall. I have been decluttering for about 3 months now and I feel so free now! I’m on a roll, my bank account is stable, I’ve started to pay off my debt, which will take several years !

Wow - this really speaks to me! I was doing the same with shopping and putting off saving for a new home! I've stopped shopping for unnecessary purchases and decluttering items around me home. I've been donating and selling items and I'm feeling so much better!

This is. A great video, I am living this way for over 4 years, I can’t imagine living any other way now. I buy intentionally, if I need a particular item that is when I shop for it, and only look for that particular item in stores, no browsing. Besides keeping my home minimal , I have narrowed my wardrobe to about 35 items per season. Once you figure out your style, it is so easy. I always keep a donation box in the back seat of my car, once it fills up, I bring it to donate

Love this content! I think minimalism has not only a visually effect, because all the junk is gone, but also a mentally effect. You have to remember where you store your stuff, how much you have or in which condition it is. This information is in your subconscious mind, and clutters your head too. So when you’re decluttering, you get rid of the information in your head as well and this is why you feel so much lighter after decluttering. I highly recommend the book Magic Cleaning from Marie Kondo. It changed my perspective to keep only the things that spark joy and her way to declutter by categories shows you how much of for examples books you really have. Oh dear, this comment is longer than I thought. 😅 Love from Germany 💕

I done a few huge declutterings, that lasted a whole weekend, or all the afternoons of a work week. Now I m at a point where I still have 3 small clusters of clutter. I plan to tackle those by spending an hour at a time. The rest of my house is decluttered and tidy.

Thank you for this! The past two years I’ve WANTED to start being a “minimalist,” but I had and all or nothing approach. I’m realizing I can start small, just start. A low-buy approach would suit me better. Also, having all this stuff yet not REALLY having substantial to show for it really resonated with me. I keep telling myself I can get this and that because I have a good income, BUT I’m still renting and my goal is to own. And, you’re right, that compliment on your clothing is so fleeting! I have also hid packages and have said something was old when it was new. New to me is a month and now I feel foolish when I think about how silly that sounds. My birthday is next week and that’s when I do my yearly reflection and set my goals. This time I need to get to the bottom of my spending problem. Thank you for this, I’m subbing and I’m going to keep watching to keep me motivated and inspired.

Christina got me to Aja Dang’s channel and then onto Dave Ramsey and I think this goes hand in hand with minimalism, essentialism and of course taking control of personal finances. I have learnt to abandon cheap thrills and defer enjoyment to reach much more important goals in life, like saving up for an emergency fund, plan for a family. When I am reminded of where I want to be, no, I do not need that shirt. Thank you again.

Number 6 is the best and most helpful , I think. All these decluttering videos and yet if the actual mindset and habits haven't changed then nothing has really changed. Number 7 was excellent too...oh now number 8.... my epiphany about compliments was when I realized many people would comment on my nice 'fill in the blank'....but what I realized is I was always looking for the comment because I felt so terrible about my actual physical appearance...and then I realized they are not actually giving me what I wanted/ needed. And I realized I had to get to the place of accepting my appearance myself and not accepting and looking for this 'false' sense of people 'approving' or 'liking' my appearance. Hope that makes sense. One of your best videos ...ever!

I would love if you talk about feeling guilty I decluttered 4 years ago . I was not working for a few years . Now I feel bad spending money . My clothes are falling apart as they are old . I like to buy nicer things so they last so when replacing I am spending . Not crazy but still spending
@Christinamychas
@Christinamychas 4 жыл бұрын
I talk about guilt a lot on my channel - it's still one of the biggest issues I grapple with frequently. I think what's helped me is to 1) consider what's reasonable - if your clothes are falling apart and you need some replacements, it's okay to spend that money. 2) budgeting - it gives you both the freedom and the restrictions to put your money where it needs to go 3) ensure you're being kind to yourself; I'd often probably never think a friend was doing something wrong if they came to me grappling with something similar. Being gentle on ourselves is sometimes challenging, but I feel is really key to finding that balance ❤️

Maybe it would help you if you calculated the cost per wear of the items? But honestly, guilt is not a logical emotion. I would suggest you practice TRUSTING yourself!! You make good decisions! If you think buying that item is a good idea, even if it costs $100-300, it probably is! ❤

I relate to every point you make. I’m not a minimalist yet but I do hope to eventually get there. I’m still struggling with my wardrobe and I feel guilty about the decision to keep what I have after I culled 2/3 of it because I know I still have a lot. The worst part is that I want more and feel unsatisfied with what I have despite owning plenty. I’m really trying to discover what my underlying motivation is. It’s a struggle.

This was supposed to be my low buy year... WAS. But I ended up buying more things. I saw a lot of sales of hair care (I have a like 33 fl oz now), face creams (maskne), food and wine (I mean...), and told myself it was better if I buy in bulk "just in case", and no, I didn't hoard toilet paper. I feel like I can't stop buying things but that's because It makes me feel safe and the little rush of dopamine really helps coping with the lockdown anxiety.
