This is my super cheap and minimalist DIY truck shell camper bed platform. It took a couple hours to build and only a $90 including the storage bins. It is super easy to remove and install when you are switching between camping mode and truck mode. Please leave comment with any you have, constructive criticism is always welcome too!!

Hi there, I saw your vid. I've been truck camping since the mid 80's. Here's what I've learned & I'll pass them on to you. 1) Get stuff you need at a camping store for backpacking. It's small, compact, & light weight. 2)Get splash guards for your truck. It'll help keep you & your rig clean. They work. I know. 3) When parking for the night, park headlong into the wind. That way if a storm comes you won't have to worry about a side wind ripping off your camper shell. Plus, if anything comes bouncing towards the truck, since you have a slimmer profile, it might miss you. If it does hit, the front of the truck is reinforced. 4) Use bug spray on the interior doors & windows/ screens openings to help keep bugs out. Use wasp & hornet spray around & on your tires to help keep critters out. Basically, all points of contact on the ground. 5) An inch is a lot of room. Learn how to stack & get used to sand & dirt. Use floor mats to put your shoes on too 6)Air out your sleeping area every morning or often. In an enclosed space the air gets stale & it will smell like feet & assholes. I know this from being in an 80 man berthing when I was in THE NAVY! 7)Use a small fan to circulate the air in your sleeping area. This will help prevent hot & cold spots from forming & help prevent condensation & mold & mildew from forming. I hope this helps. Great vid, thanks for sharing. Drive safe. 🤠

I wish I could hop in and out of the truck like that, torn meniscus at 65 makes the in and out a little slower but I'm still truck camping in the great state of Arizona. Great stuff thanks.

Nice and simple but I would guess that $90 bucks, would be close to $150 now. I bought a sheet of 3/4” plywood a few months ago. It was $80 just for one sheet. Insane!

Had the same set in mine. You might want to put a piece of carpet down on the plywood. I tubed mine so if I dropped anything I did have to pull the platform up. Could you epoxy some small wood pieces to hold the curtain rods or go with the reflective. Nice setup, keep it simple.

Thanks Tom! Right now I have a moving blanket that I put on the plywood but I would like to carpet them in the future! I have a solution for the curtains that I am making a video about and hopefully you will like what I decided to do!

Are you happy sleeping in what you built? I am thinking of doing something similar to sleep in when I want to go hunting or when cheaply traveling across the country. I haven't bought anything yet, but have the truck ordered. For a truck cap I am wondering whether I should get a cap that is level with the cab like you have, or whether I should get a cap that is taller than the cab (so it would have a little head room). What do you recommend?

I did exactly same setup in June. It’s very simple and cheap. I bought my mattress from Sam’s Club for $129. Great video my friend. How do you put up the Shell window curtains? I don’t want to put screws into the shell. It’s gonna leaks.
@TrucktoTrail
@TrucktoTrail 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it is a great set up! I have not installed curtains yet, but I plan to use the bolts that hold on the window frame to mount small curtain rods. I will make of video of this when I do it. Another option, if your shell is carpeted, is to Velcro curtains to the carpet.

@@TrucktoTrail my Shell is fiber glass. Nothing is sticking due to cold and heat. It fell off overnight. So I build wood frame inside the Shell so I can hang curtains all 4 sides., and hang other stuffs.

Won't you screw at least your plywood to those thick sticks beneath it. Was that the 2x2 ? I'm bad in describing woods. My apologies. So that your plywood will be more stable while sleeping on it.
@TrucktoTrail
@TrucktoTrail 3 жыл бұрын
The biggest reason I don't screw the parts together is so they are easy to install and remove. It is really stable to sleep on because the pieces fit snug in the bed of the truck. Thanks for the question!

$25 for a 3/4" sheet of plywood? Can you send me the link? Thank you.
@TrucktoTrail
@TrucktoTrail 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Stephen, I can't seem to find the link to the sheet that I bought, so it is possible I was wrong about this price, but I'm very sure it wasn't more then $30. I got it from home depot and it was sanded on one side. I built this before the recent shutdowns so that might be the cause of the price increase, also. Sorry I am not more help about this matter. If I do find the link I will be sure to add it here.
