My parents went through the Great Depression and so I grew up hearing "use it up, wear it out, make do or do without." So all that generation knew how to live a simple life. I had 3 dresses and 1 pair of school shoes. As soon as I got home from school, I changed out of my school clothes into my older clothes ("play clothes") so my school clothes would last longer. I don't remember my folks ever buying new clothes for themselves - we didn't have much money and it wasn't in the budget. But I never knew we were "poor" - we lived on a farm and raised our own food - we ate better than any folks living in town! So I grew up knowing that having a lot of "stuff" wasn't the marker of a happy, successful life. I'm 73 now, and I am so thankful to my parents for what they taught me.

My hubby by his own admission is lazy when it comes to putting things away. I said to him on day “ for a lazy person, you sure give yourself a lot more work to do. If you just put your stuff away straight away, you only have to do it once. By putting it wherever and then having to put it away in its right spot later, it’s double the work” He just looked at me, paused for a few mins and then said “ Didn’t look at it that way” He has been putting things away as he goes….still needs a little reminder but nowhere near like he was before.💕

Usually written out in a card because I'm not super creative, but especially with young kids you could put a picture of the experience in a balloon or attached to a little trinket to make it more festive.

My mother lived on a farm in North Dakota through the Depression. Her family didn't have much. She learned how to use and reuse things and then make them into something else. Quilts and rag rugs are classic examples. She raised three children and kept us and dad fed and dressed on dad's mechanics wages. People don't do that anymore.

I've learned declutter before organized, know your family organization style and come up with a system that works for everyone. We enter thru kitchen so we have a command center to drop off mail, keys, shoes, jacket, bags. Having a place for everything and everything in its place. I also keep all space visually clutter free and limit myself with drawer, basket # of hangers etc. I've created a morning, night and weekend routine. When you don't have alot of stuff it's easy to clean and organize so my house stay clutter free all the time.

I love the visibility rule. I'm new to decluttering and am a self proclaimed pack rat. Even though I am motivated to declutter my home after watching the series of videos on KZfaq, it can be overwhelming when I think of everything that needs to be decluttered. So the visibility rule will help me, I hope.😊

Love the idea of using things until they’re worn out. I haven’t heard that specifically mentioned before, but it makes total sense! Better for our wallets, homes, and the earth. Have $ automatically transferred to your savings account every month.

Using things until worn out can be overdone. I remember trying to do a project for my mom and she had not one decent tool that functioned properly including screwdrivers and scissors. She had the money to replace these but didn't.

Just remove the basket? It only has one blanket that you probably dont need for the entry. I like the title you gave Dana decluttering guru. It's like a hoarders heart self talks. Dana does confess to having a cleaning lady. She takes her laundry for the wash and fold. I can't relate to her because we have to do all our own work. My motivation is if I do declutter properly I wont need to pay for those services! I'm working on it.

This year we are giving experiences or consumables to our family members other than our daughter. She is a 2 year old that due to me coming from a blended family has a surplus of grandparents. We're giving her 1 birthday present and 1 Christmas present. My parents that live closest and help with her care are giving her presents to stay at their house. We're also encouraging friends to gift a book for foster kids instead of a toy if they want to give a present. We've had great fun in involving her in getting her outgrown items together to donate to local foster kids her age.

My teens get one reminder to put their things away. If I have to deal with it, it becomes mine and I get to do whatever I want with it-and they KNOW I don’t mind throwing stuff away. I’ve tossed magazines, little toys, flip flops, a baseball, trading cards, papers…you name it, I’ve probably tossed it if they haven’t dealt with it after the one reminder rule. My kids KNOW! 😉 (That being said, I would never toss anything I know has high value (sentimental or monetarily. The kids don’t usually leave those kinds of things out and about)
