Congratulations, Dennis!!! As my test pilot, Sir Eric Clutton said after performing the first flight of my Mini-Max, "You now have a brand new airplane with about a hundred things wrong with it". I'm thrilled that the only problems you ran into were camera related. Throughout this video, all the emotions I felt on the day Eric flew my airplane came back - the apprehension, the joy, the excitement, and the knots in my stomach, not to mention choking back tears from missing my days of flying which are now behind me. One of my fondest memories was the day I flew my airplane home from Eric's airport to my home airport, and looking down to see my airport acquaintances and family at the end of the runway as I approached to land. Godspeed, Dennis. Does anyone have a tissue? Jealousy and nostalgia aside, 😂 I wish you many years of enjoyable and safe flying...

Hey Michael, I always enjoy your messages! I certainly had all of those emotions and more. I test flew on Veterans Day, my first solo in 94 was on Independence day. I’m flying in some of the most historic air in the country. It’s a lot to take in all at once. Are your days of flying truly over? For you I certainly wish that was not the case

@@DTMinimax Thank you, Dennis. I'm about to turn 62, and no longer have the financial means to fly. Even ultralights are prohibitively expensive these days, as are airport hangar fees, etc. Realistically, it's highly unlikely I'll ever be able to fly again. You'll have to enjoy it for all of us who can no longer do it.

Hi Dennis, Congratulations, Congratulations, Congratulations. It’s Graeme Brown from Sydney, Australia. I have been following your every build video since you commenced your build in the rear of the factory, close to the rail line, somewhere I think it was in LA. I remember the trains going past at regular intervals. What a remarkable achievement with your build. You have been so meticulous with every part of your build. You must be very proud and satisfied with the outcome of your many, many hours of hard work. What makes it more remarkable is you hand built every part, not an assembled kit. I have built many scratch built RC aircraft from plans and also many kit RC aircraft and I know what goes into and the time to build an aircraft from plans. Well done Dennis.

Thanks so much for your message! You’ve certainly seen a lot of videos! I’m glad I chose the path I did, it is the most rewarding adventure. I couldn’t have asked for a better first flight, I was enjoying every minute of it! From 2x6 boards from the lumber yard, to the many trips to Aircraft Spruce, from the Factory, to the Compton Airport, to my garage, to my fox field hangar…what a journey.

Dennis thanks again for your educated replies . You are correct a 503 in the 1030 airframe is a big jump , we have located both 1100R and 1600 plan drawi gs and are checking where the airframe variatio s or " beefing up " occur . The 1100 is approved to upgrade to a 1600 with a fan cooled 447 , however we have got our wieght down to more or less 500 lbs by using a free air cooled 503 and changing the wheels from cast alluminum to the black nylon type . The main difference so far we could find in the drawings is just that the 1030 has the ply leading edges at the empenage and the 1100 has the laminated edges . We are so close to the gross wieght design with 10 ltrs of fuel that we are probably going to test fly . ( That's the plan today , if we chicken out I have a 447 under the bench and I will drop that in plac3 of the 503 ) Will keep you posted , RiP
@DTMinimax8 ай бұрын
How did your W&B work out with the free air 503?
@robertripley10008 ай бұрын
@@DTMinimax Dennis good morning , the W&B with the 503 is good , no problem , and the test pilot who is slightly lighter than me is happy to test as with him in it she is 500 lbs which is good . With me in her we did W&B again and that was also within the limits but wieght is 25lbs over . The only stress area I am concerned with is the tail unit which is the " light wieght " tail design , and it worries me if this will be OK ? However , due respect to Americans , but the things that I see people.e building into mini max's and the size of some of the guys flying them over there I am inclined to not be so worried 😯 RiP

It was so exhilarating! There were so many emotions all at once. Having Parker’s voice on the clips brought me to tears when I had a chance to process it. The plane was perfectly in trim and I haven’t even used the trim tab yet on the elevator. The controls are much lighter than I expected.

Dennis I am so sorry for all the questions but I can't get anything out of the "MINI MAX " ( Do they actually exist anymore ? ) and due to the big 503 in the little 1030R airframe I am worried about heavy wieght and stress . I have 447 but with a fan it's not much lighter than a free air cooled 503 😢😢😢😢😢 Can you advise are the leading edges of your fin and tailplane made out of laminated straps of wood or is it this ply glues around curved type formers ? Can you possible find a way to send me as some sort of attachment the drawing details of your main spar construction? Sorry again , RiP
@DTMinimax8 ай бұрын
No worries, I’ll help you all I can. My tail pieces are the laminated leading edges. With the weight of my engine, I had to go that route. A 503 on a 1030 airframe is a big jump. There is some extra material in the wing spars of the Eros which was designed for the 503. I don’t have those plans but I’m assuming it is probably the same as the V-max. You’re done with construction, right?

@@DTMinimax So a question: The engine I have is a 20hp b&s. I will adapt the engine with gear, but I still think I need to lighten the plane. The shape of the hi-max is very nice, it looks like a smaller 152 than the 152. Is it possible to make it from aluminum, using the dimensions of Hi-max but completely changing the construction style? Like an affordaplane with a closed cabin
