Hey folks in this video I do a deep dive into the world of adapted lenses on the Fujifilm GFX. It's a common practice but I haven't seen many videos about it so I figured I'd do one. I mention Jonas Rask a few times in the video. Here's a link to his channel / jr050680 .
You can visit his website jonasraskphotography.com to get good insight about adapting lenses to the GFX as well as a lot of other good info on Fuji cameras.
I'll also be doing other videos about my cameras and lenses in the future so stay tuned!

Thanks for your insights on these lenses! I recommend some Tamron Adaptall lenses, especially the 135/2.5, 24/2.5, 28/2.5 and 90/2.5. They are compact, sharp, inexpensive, looking awsome and have a hughe imagecircle, even bigger than Minolta. And you can buy the adaptalladapter for the GFX adapter you already have (M42, Canon FD, Minolta RC, etc).

Interesting video. I've been an X-Series shooter for years - having moved over from Nikon DSLR system. I got the 50r a few months ago and I have the 32-64mm zoom - which is a great lens and covers most of what I need. However, I've also been a film shooter for 45+ years and currently have an Olympus OM system which seems to have lenses that partner well with the GFX. I bought the K&F OM to GFX adapter and I'm starting to use the GFX with my 21mm/f3.5 (17mm on GFX), 50mm/f1.4 (a quick 40mm on GFX), 85mm/f2 (67mm on GFX) and 135mm/f2.8 (107mm on GFX). So far, there doesn't seem to be much, if any, vignetting evident. I'm hoping to get a 200mm/f4 soon(ish) to get a bit more reach / compression for landscapes, etc.
@daygon128
@daygon128 4 жыл бұрын
That's awesome Paul! I'm not sure if I have seen any examples anywhere of OM lenses being used with it so that's very unique. I bet with Olympus's quality some of those lenses are sublime on it. The absolute best thing about this Fuji system is it's adaptability!

Thank you for sharing, Corey! I was itching to see if Jonas had shot with the 100 and some of his Minolta or other vintage lens and found you... love what you shared. I shoot the Sony A7R system and have various Minolta, Canon, Nikon and Leica vintage lens... and keep wondering how the Fujifilm system might work for... you know, medium format versus full frame. Anyway, really love what you shared.

Thank you Scott! I had an a7RII before I bought the 50R and was using a Kipon speed booster with my Mamiya 645 lenses. While it gave the medium format "feel", it was lacking in the image quality department due to the distortion caused by the speed booster. If you are interested in going with a GFX, I'd strongly recommend the used market because most of them have seen little to no real wear. If you are a portrait, studio, or landscape photographer it's a no brainer. High speed stuff isn't it's cup of tea though. I'll be doing another video about adapting lenses in much further detail soon!

I totally get why you use and experiment with legacy lenses. Personally I owm the XT3 as my main digital camera. Currently I have about £3000 tied up in 4 fujifilm lenses and approximately £500-£1000 in lots of weird legacy lenses. At a guess I shoot 50% of the time on the old lenses to get unique looks and have more fun. If I had to choose between the dedicated and legacy lenses as a desert island choice, it would be legacy without hesitation. 👍🏼 up for the vid and encouraging others to toe dip into the murky waters of old lenses. Ansel Adams did quite well with old lenses 🤔

Great vid wish I saw it sooner. I highly recommend the Mitakon 85mm f1.2 and 63mm f1.4 for portraits. And converted a Leica R 35mm f2.8 (can find em for less than 5 bills if you look hard enough) slight vignette but usable for landscapes.

Thank you Juan I have not used the Mitakon lenses for the GFX yet but do have the 35mm for the X-T3 and love it. I've been very interested in them for a while so will likely pick them up. Is there any vignetting on the Mitakon 85mm 1.2?
@xjuanx92
@xjuanx92 3 жыл бұрын
@@daygon128 yes there is a slight vignette on the 85mm but is easily manageable in Lightroom. Can confirm the 63mm has far less since it’s designed more for the GFX sensor and the 85mm is left over from the FF designs. I have the same 35mm in my XPro 3 and love that lens as well. I may look into that Minolta 58mm. They seem to he reasonably priced as well as the Canon 58mm f1.2 FD lens.

Really enjoyed this video. I use tons of adapted lenses on my Fuji XT-3 and really prefer older lenses for there character and the beautiful bokah. My favorite lenses include the Zeiss Jena Pancolar 50mm f1.8 and the Auto Revuenon 55mm f1.4. The bokah you get with these lenses is out of this world.The Revuenon is a TOMIOCA lens.He made a 1.2 also, but I always get beat when bidding ! My favorite macro lens is the Tokina 100mm f 2.8 D. I even have the Fuji 80mm macro, but much prefer the Tokina. By the way, it's a wonderful portrait lens as well. I use it a lot. Thank you so much for this video Corey! Your affordable alternative to GFX glass is eye opening and definitely relevant these COVID days. We all need to save a buck. As you say they work. Would you know the ideal focal lengths in 35mm format lenses to minimize vignetting on GFX? from this batch here i only heard you mention vignetting on 28mm. Does that mean there's less or no vignetting on say 50mm or 135mm lenses and up? Although from your examples i honestly liked even the 'character' of the dark corners. i don't even see the need to crop it. I've also heard that the larger image circle on the Otus lenses, even Sigma Art series would make a great combo for the GFX. what are your thoughts on this? Thank you in advance and more power.
@daygon128
@daygon128 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Jude! In my experience I've seen hard vignetting on all focal lengths depending on the lens. For example my Canon 135mm f2L gave me hard vignetting on anything near infinity, but was ok if I was in the mid range or near minimum focus distance. I've found that about 75-80% of the time the vignetting can be mostly corrected if not outright eliminated in Lightroom or other editing software. It will however reveal lens distortion on the edges, so I have to correct for that too. Like you said, a lot of times there is a character the vignette gives the images, especially for close up portraits and I just leave it alone. Anyone that is interested in adapting lenses to the GFX, especially vintage ones, can't expect the optical quality of Fuji OEM glass. But that said, I adapted them to get away from that. I never like my images to be clinically sharp. My personal taste is for them to have a feel of the old days of analog film when you were never sure you nailed focus. Speaking of optical quality, I think Sigma and the Zeiss Otus is about as good as you can get with adapted glass, except for the lens I'm about to do a review on: The Schneider projector lens. I have all the pieces to make it work and am now testing it and LOVE it. It covers the entire sensor with 0 vignetting like my 645 Mamiya lenses. The only other lenses I would like to try are some of the Sigma Art lenses like the 35mm 1.4 and the 105mm. The 35mm on the GFX is the perfect wide angle so at 1.4 would be a dream. I'll have the new video of the Schneider lens up very soon so please subscribe and hit the bell because you are in for a treat. Stay tuned and cheers!

Interesting video. That's some impressive field curvature magic with the Canon 50 F1.8. The corners are more into focus than the mid part of the frame. It does kinda diminishes the benefit of the larger sensor and smaller dof. Using a full frame sensor and 40mm F0.95 or F1.2 will provide very close to identical type of rendering and dof. I bought the Laowa 35mm F0.95 fullframe lens exactly for that reason. Wide angle and the depth of field of a 50mm F1.2, great combo.
@daygon128
@daygon128 2 ай бұрын
Yes I wish that Fujifilm or Laowa would make a 1.2 lens for the system. Many people in the community don't care for DOF or bokeh but I'm in the opposite camp. The brightest lens I'm aware of that is made to cover the GFX sensor is the Mitakon 65mm 1.4. I'd really enjoy a native lens like that with autofocus. I didn't know Laowa made that lens until recently and I'm really excited that someone finally made an ultra bright 35 for full frame. I'll have to try it out soon!

Hi Janmejay just seeing this. I'm planning a further in depth video talking about lens coverage on the GFX with samples. In the mean time I have a general rule that anything 75mm or longer covers the GFX sensor with minimal vignetting or absolutely none at all. Anything shorter than that is hit or miss depending on the size of the rear element. I've found that any lens designed for 35mm full frame that is not longer than around 75mm normally has coverage issues that require post processing correction.

So just to be clear....when you adapt full frame lenses to the GFX system does it still have the same "medium format look" or not? I assume you have to use 35mm crop mode when adapting lenses or you will have serious vignetting correct?
@daygon128
@daygon128 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't used any 35mm lenses without having some form of vignette, however some are much worse than others. For example, my Minolta MC Rokkor 135mm 2.8 had considerably less vignetting than my Canon 135mm f2L. It all comes down to how the lens itself is designed, and at this point it's mostly trial and error. The ones that do have less vignetting are easily corrected in post. And you are correct that 35mm mode eliminates the vignette altogether. As for the "medium format look", it's a strange thing really. The camera completely transforms the feel of the images coming from 35mm lenses. So much so that you can't tell they are the same lenses. This is partly due to distortion but mostly because of the larger sensor creating much more drastic focus falloff. It makes the cheap Canon 50mm 1.8 STM look incredible, and with the Techart Adapter you have autofocus. The closest I've gotten to the medium format look with any lens on it is with the Minolta MC 58mm 1.2, basically 0.95 on the GFX, and with the adapted Schneider Ultra Cinelux projector lens I'm about to do a review on. They look amazing and definitely worth it if you can handle manual focus. All of these lenses I'm talking about in this video will give you significantly more shallow depth of field than any lens Fujifilm currently offers for the GFX, aside from the 110 f2. And as with the Minolta lenses, the tonality is very close as well.

I use the Fotodiox adapter and it's worked fine for the 4 years I've had it. All of my MD mount lenses work with it and only the 58mm 1.2 has any play with fitment but it isn't enough to be a problem. I believe K&F Concept also makes one but either brand should do fine.

That's awesome Drew! I would highly, highly recommend either renting one or borrowing one before owning it. Reason being, and I'll make a video on this soon, is that the GFX line of cameras behaves completely different than the APS-C X models. Much slower frame rate for shooting will be a no go for some, but if still life and portraits is your thing, it's a no brainer. The 50R is going for great deals now on the used market, and most photographers really take care of them so I'd highly recommend it!

Very interesting and enjoyable video. Currently awaiting the arrival of a GFX 50r and I'll hope to be doing similar. Can't afford to splash out on Fuji GFX lenses right now but have lots of quality Nikon, Canon FD, Zuiko and Voigtlander glass which I can't wait to try out on the 50r. I have an x-T1 and was hoping for a Fuji full frame but the 50r seems to be the answer to my prayers judging by what I've seen/read. I had bought a Sony a7 in the hope that would give me full frame but while the image quality is ok the handling is terrible compared to the x-T1. I want and need a fill frame camera with a proper shutter speed dial!! I'm particularly interested in the results I get from the Canon FD 35mm T/S and the 55mm f1.2. Should be interesting! Some great images and thanks for posting :)

Thanks and hope you enjoy your 50R! I too was using Sony and the ergonomics and menu systems were poor compared to Fuji or Canon. The only thing I wish the 50R was better on is speed. If you are using it for fine art, still life, or anything that time or fast moving objects are not the focus, it's a winner. You'll love adapted lenses on it!

If it's for the GFX I'd choose either the one for Mamiya or Contax 645. I love the idea of the one for the Pentax 67 lenses, however when you do the math, the speedbooster doesn't quite get you the field of view of a 6x7 negative. But with the 645 speedbooster, it actually gives you a slightly wider field of view so it will fully utilize those lenses. I've already used the Mamiya lenses on the camera with a dummy adapter and loved them, just couldn't get their full potential because at the time there wasn't a speedbooster available. If money wasn't an option I'd go for the Contax 645 adapter with the Zeiss Planar 80mm f2. It would be amazing.

I had one issue with the first one I had with the lens having a bit of play. The second one has a small amount but it really depends on the lens itself. @daygon128 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't used the 80mm 1.7 yet but I have used the Schneider 80mm f2 and it's incredible for a projector lens. However I'm certain the 80mm 1.7 would be a superior lens since it's more modern and designed to work for the GFX. The sticking point is the price. I believe that currently the lens costs too much, as I do every other GFX lens, so the vintage lenses or the adapted Canon mount lenses work fine for me. In fact, the Techart adapter with the Canon lenses works comparable to the GF lenses. They're very slow to autofocus which is something Fujifilm needs to correct with their lenses before charging so much. If you're looking to get insane depth of field and unique character on the GFX, then the vintage glass is the way to go. But if you're wanting a sharper, more clinical look, especially for professional work, I'd invest in Fuji glass. Hope that helps!

@daygon128 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen enough photo samples to draw a solid opinion but I do have an opinion of the brand. They seem to be engineered extremely well for the price. The only thing that has hampered them in the past is quality coating of their glass in terms of flaring, fringing and CA. The 90mm seems to be a very interesting case study because if it is genuinely made for the GFX mount and not a converted 35mm lens, then the character of the images should be different than anything we've seen by comparison. This was also the case for the Mitakon 65mm 1.4, which for many is a must have lens for the system. Lens distortion is the killer of 35mm lenses converted to the GFX. While it's mostly correctable in post, I prefer lenses that cover the entire sensor so if the 90mm can do that then it should be a real treat especially for portraits.

I shoot with Canon ,my Pentax 6 x 7 and sometime my old Nikon F2AS which has my favorite lens the 105mm. In order to use my Pentax 6 x 7 and Canon lens. Do I need one or two adapters and do you have any recommendations? Thank you
@daygon128
@daygon128 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and yes you will need an adapter for each type of lens mount you'll be fitting to the GFX. There are two types of adapters for medium format lenses like the Pentax 67. The first is the dummy adapter, which is just like the adapters you would use for full frame lenses. They have no optical element inside, so with the medium format glass, you will receive a cropped image of the true size. For example, the Pentax 105mm 2.4 is the equivalent of an 83mm 1.9 on GFX, but on the 67 it is a 52mm 1.2. The way to get the larger view is with a focal reducer/speed booster. Companies like Kipon make them but they are very pricey and few people have done reviews on them. Personally the only speed booster I would buy would be for 645 lenses, as the GFX sensor size is close enough that the focal reducer actually gives you a larger image than 645. I'd recommend companies like Fotodiox or K&F Concept for the full frame lens adapters. They have almost every mount adapter for the GFX. Hope this helps!

Yes you can! One potential caveat of the 65:24 crop mode is that it must be shot in JPEG, unless they have changed that in a firmware update. So you'd have to have your colors right when shooting in that mode. Either way it's a very cool feature and it can be used with most lenses!

What would be your opinion on this? Would this be the best set up possible for iq, character and Medium format look?
@daygon128
@daygon128 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply! I haven't personally used the Pentax lenses on the GFX. However, if using them with a pass through (dummy) adapter without a focal reducer, you will have quite a lot of crop due to the size difference between the GFX sensor and the 6x7 negative. Even with the focal reducer, you would not quite get the image size of 6x7, so I would recommend using 645 lenses with it, as the sensor is much closer to that negative size and will allow you to get more of the potential out of the lenses. Hope this helps and I just uploaded a video about the Cinelux lens so check it out!

Almost all Canon EF lenses will work with it though, and most of them are much cheaper than the new RF lenses. I've also tried the Mamiya Sekor C lenses from the RB series of cameras and they work amazingly on the GFX. Probably overall they are my favorite so far, since they have no vignetting or need to correct distortion. Hope that helps. The images need to be corrected with a lens profile or through manual adjustment for distortion anyway so usually it does that automatically in Lightroom or ACR if you have the profiles. Next year they bring a 80mm 1.7 i think... here the same. i dont have any gf lens for the fuji system. using the canon autofocus adapter with the 85mm 1.2 L lens most of the time... I cant understand why all the big camera companies went all in with full frame (exept fuji and hassleblad). I have the old 6D and could never bring myself to buy a newer DSLR. The Dynamic range of the 6D isnt great, focussing is just focus and recompose, its not extreme high resolution, it has no ibis... all these points are much better in the newer models - for example r6. but will a picture from the r6 look this much different from a picture of my old 6D? i dont think so. its both full frame... perhaps i get more photos in focus and the newer lenses are sharper. but the look of the image wont be that different - and the old lenses are sharp enough for me... what will canon sell in the future? i now can wait until the prices of the r6 drops and buy it in 2-3 years for 1500dollar or less, just to get better dynamic range, autofocus and ibis...after this, there wont be any reason for me to buy a newer canon EOS R full frame camera anymore. they will bring more and more megapixels, but im not that interested in this. A lot of beginners will start with a cheap full frame body (u can buy a Canon RP for 900 dollars, or an old 5D mark II (for 400) or a sony A7 mark 1) and the pros will search for ways to make their images look different and unique. At this point fuji and hassleblad will have a complete system with a lot of lenses and good autofocus, better quality than full frame and a different look. Nikon Canon Panasonic Sigma and Sony do all the same and i dont think they can all survive with this. they didnt really innovate... when sony startet with mirrorless, they were sleeping, Fuji brings first "cheap" mirrorless medium format and they are sleeping again...
