The mere fact that a low end film camera could correct red eye shows just how advanced Minolta was for its time.

Thanks for your review. I’ve got the Dynax 300si version of this, but it looks basically the same. I’d agree that this is a pretty simple camera to use & it takes great photos. It’s a bit on the bulky side for a point & shoot, but due to the meaty right sided grip, it’s easy to keep it steady when taking shots. I’ve not had any problems with it & it seems quite a reliable camera to use overall. When you take a shot, it makes a satisfying ‘clunk’ sound as the shutter is released.

Yeah it does have a nice chunky shutter sound! It's definitely a 'no frills' camera, but that's what makes it fun, I think.

I just bought one to capture my mother's Birthday Trip to Istanbul in may, which I thought it would be a fun Idea. I was looking at second hand cameras on the internet and the average compact Camera was 15 to 20 €. Then I stumbled across the Dynax which was 25 € including the Lens and bought it right away. It arrived yesterday and I started setting it up. I can't wait to try it an see the results! Thanks for your Video!

Technically, this camera does qualify as an SLR, as it has a reflex mirror, prism and through-the-lens viewing, despite the limited functions offered. I only wish that the 300si included an exposure compensation feature (or at least an ASA value override), as this would allow for some user control over exposure and thereby greater overall usability in difficult lighting situations. Perhaps Minolta thought that including such a feature would confuse the intended target market.
@filmismorefun
@filmismorefun 5 жыл бұрын
I totally agree about the exposure compensation. It really is limiting, but as you suggested, Minolta may have not wanted to confuse the target market. Or, possibly strip it of all features to make other higher tier cameras more appealing to a different target group. However, it's still a fun little camera though. 🙂
@rookmaster7502
@rookmaster7502 5 жыл бұрын
@@filmismorefun Good point about the higher tier cameras. I do like that the camera includes a focus lock option, as this can sometimes make capturing moving objects a little easier - at least in situations when you are able to anticipate where the focus point will approximately be.

My mother recently gave me this camera (Maxxum 300si) that she hasn't shot in years. One feature I wish this camera had is to be able to manually set the ISO. I bulk roll a lot of my b/w film, and not all the cases are DX coded, which means the camera defaults to 100 ISO exposure.
@filmismorefun
@filmismorefun 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dustin. One thing you can try is creating DX codes on your reloadable cassettes. You can use metal tape and electrical tape to fake out the camera. I hope that helps! 🙂

I have a 350si. As far as I can tell controls are virtually the same. This is my first film camera experience. Are there any settings for film ISO, shutter, etc.? Is it all automatic? How does it know what ISO is installed? Also every time I turn it on, that startup sound lasts for about 5 seconds and autofocus doesn’t work. It makes a sound like it’s trying to autofocus, but it doesn’t. Anything I might be overseeing?

This camera is like photographic tryptophan... It is so boring, just pushing a shutter button. This is in fact an SLR though, just an overly complicated, overly bulky, automatic SLR. I personally never understood why these were popular, when there were so many awesome small point and shoot cameras that were even more capable. My old Yashika point and shoots were more capable AND had Zeiss lenses... It's like these minoltas were for the people that wanted to look (and feel) like a photographer but didn't want to learn how to actually shoot. Why assume all that bulk for nothing? And now with how expensive film and development is, I sure as hell want to make the most out of every frame. I probably would stop shooting film after 40 years if this was the only camera available... I own 50 plus film cameras an not one of these. Actually not one Minolta...😂😂

"Photographic Tryptophan" 😂😂😂 I agree, this camera would appeal to people who don't want to learn how to expose and just want an automatic camera. Some of the lenses in the Minolta AF lineup are really good though. I've always thought of it as a 'bridge' film camera.
