Film Camera: Canon A1 with a 50mm f/1.4 Canon lens -- FujiColor Superia 200
Video Camera: Canon 5D3 with a 35mm Summicron F2 (1970) Leica lens
This is our first STORY in our new Snippet/Story style and we are so very excited to share it with you.
This week we tried to weave the beautiful experience of film photography with a bit of a how-to-video with the hopes of inspiring you to get out and capture your environment.
The entire experience of shooting film from choosing your film stock, to manually loading the film, to the sexy sound of winding the film after each photo, well it all just begs you to slow down, to focus on the moment at hand, and take it all in and then... the most important part... to stay present. No checking how the photo turned out, no re-taking the selfie, not even the need to see how many likes it got. Nope, a film camera gives you the luxury of hoping that you captured the moment and letting that be enough.
And while I can go on and on about the lessons that film has already taught me - and this was just my first roll ! - the main thing that making this story taught me is how lucky I am to have a partner as patient and thoughtful as Lou! His work ethic is unlike anyone I have ever met and the passion he pours into creating these beautiful moments each week never ceases to amaze me.
I'm grateful for this week's video for reminding me of time spent: hanging at second hand camera stores, capturing special moments with dear friends, and enjoying perfect moments of summer when you feel surrounded by love.

I believe that most digital cameras have manual modes that you can adjust these settings (aperture, shutter speed, etc) to experiment with before you start shooting expensive film.

If you really want to learn, buy a hand held meter and shoot fully manual. I feel you really learn the relationship between ISO, Shutter speed and Aperture.

Indeed. For me part of the allure is that you only have 36 shots on a roll. That forces you to be frugal and much more thoughtful. With film I think you tend to make pictures rather than take pictures.
@TheRobertSt

MrMfloor Yes there is: the photos will last for 'ever'. Take a digital Photo and it will be gone within 10-15 years. Take a photo with an analogue and it may last over a 1000 years. Do you have all of your digital photos taken 25 years ago? Don't think so.
@jonathanwalters5739
@jonathanwalters5739 7 жыл бұрын
TheRobertSt The archival quality is more along the lines of 100 years under proper storage conditions, not 1000 years. Also, that is for silver based medium, and in the colour development process, all the silver is replaced with dye, so again, the archival quality of colour film doesn't quite hit even the more reasonable 100 year mark.

@@marianolopez101 haha it's possible but I mean, being a photographer that specializes in film/instant film isn't that wild of an idea. I know for a fact that many photographers freelance solely using film. a lot of people want their special event captured both digitally, and on the film they look at all of their older relative's special events on. so like, hiring a polaroid instant film photographer for your wedding isn't completely unheard of.

I did have to watch some videos on how to use the thing because I do have digital and everything, but as far as the Canon goes, I just leave the f stop in A mode and let the camera decide on the scene. I think I agree with many of the comments on here. This is a beautiful story and it is wonderful to see such young people getting so involved in film. Also, from a technical point of view they explained it clearly, simply and accurately. I think the girl said near the start that she always winds on the film after she takes a shot. I guess this is so she is always ready to take the next one. I would suggest this is not really a good idea as it leaves the shutter springs under tension and over a period of time they can weaken which will affect the shutter sped accuracy. Probably best to wind on just before the next shot. But, I absolutely loved this video and enjoyed seeing the fun and excitement being demonstrated. Well done guys.
@WildWeRoam
@WildWeRoam 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and for the tip! We actually heard that from a few other comments after shooting this video and have since switched to winding right before taking a photo--which is better for the camera but also leads to a lot of moments where we forget that the camera isn't wound yet, so it takes some getting used to I guess! But it's nice to be doing things properly and taking care of the camera so I'm sure we'll get used to it soon!! Hope your having a nice weekend : )

There's just something so special about photographs...I remember dumpster diving, and finding people's old 35mm photos of pets and family - and crying. You can see the happiness that - or imagine the happiness that those quick moments in time brought someone - the memories that it served. That's why I love photography personally, because I always remember how I was feeling when I took a photo, and I love that sense of finality a photo has. Everything was still for a split second in time, nothing changed, and it's there for us to see, forever. Beautiful video - outstanding.

Indeed, slide film is a whole different animal, very sensitive to exposure -1/2 stop in either direction for a usable image, must be very mindful of your settings. If you should decide to accept the challenge, good luck.

Credits to engineers and inventors. For without them we wouldnt have this technology to play around with. Remember, a bunch of ppl worked really hard behind the scenes so we can play around and take pictures. They get neglected by almost everyone. The most important jobs are usually the thankless ones.

I'm 25 now and I still remember the sheer excitement I felt when I was a kid, whenever my Dad stops by at nearby Fujifilm shop to buy film rolls before we head to the airport for a long vacation. Hey guys, just rewatched this video. When you first posted this, I was just getting back into photography. This video inspired me a few months ago to dig up my dad's old 35mm Nikon N2020 he received for his high school graduation circa 1987, buy a few rolls of film, and give it my best shot. A few months later, my friends are beginning to take an interest in film and I am teaching them things that I learned from this video. Your channel, and especially this video, will always inspire me to take the best photographs that I can and share them with good people. Film is the best place to go if you're starting out in photography. It's almost like attending a History class - you'll never stop learning about the medium, and it'll only give you a greater understanding for other modes of photography (like digital). You can make it even more interesting by progressing through different ages of camera systems. I started with my mum's Olympus OM-1 from the late 70s, then my grandad's Nikon F-301, and now I have a Canon EOS 3 from 2000. I still own each, and have learned from their different technologies. If I could offer one vital tip, its to try as many different films as possible; don't just settle on one because it's the cheapest or 'worked'.
@WildWeRoam
@WildWeRoam 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the insight Henry! That tip could not have come at a better time because we've been really impressed by the portra and were about to get stuck on that for a long time so its great to know that experimenting with other options is always a good idea : ) We have quite a few rolls of portra to get through so that might be what we shoot in the next few videos but after that we will have to give some other options a go! Hope your having a nice week : )
@miniroll32
@miniroll32 7 жыл бұрын
Portra is lovely! Obviously it's fantastic for skin tones, but it also makes a good general film. If I was you, I would try Ektar next. That will give you an appreciation just how 'opposite' films can be; whereas Portra is subtle and calm, Ektar is saturated and lively. Many people call it the Holiday film, and for good reason. Did you purchase the Portra yourself? I might suggest buying film prior to using it, only because it's very easy to let them expire! There are plenty of online film stores (7 Day Shop, Discount Films Direct, etc) which have free postage, so they're delivered in 4/5 days which is great. I will upload some of my shots to Flickr and share them with you :o) Edit: Here's the link; www.flickr.com/photos/tom_clarkes_world/?
@WildWeRoam
@WildWeRoam 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the tip! We will definitely try that one out very soon!! The "Hollywood" look sounds very enticing : ) We usually just buy a few rolls at a time so I don't think they will expire but my uncle also gave us a ton of rolls he had in the freezer so we've been trying to shoot through those as quickly as possible! And thanks for sharing your work!! That black and white lighthouse shot is gorgeous! Makes me want to head to the ocean hear in Germany and give that a go!
