1:34 The different types of minor 2-5-1 progressions
4:03 Some simple drop voicings
6:12 Voicings using higher tensions

8:24 Modulating to the relative major
11:49 Whole tone motion using augmented chords
12:52 A nifty voicing for the C minor chord
13:30 Adding contrapuntal motion
In this lesson I will play a short piece in the key of C minor and then we'll discuss some of the ideas behind it: The minor 2-5-1 progression, how to voice it, how to modulate within the minor key and how to add interest to your chords by whole step motion or by using contrapuntal motion within the chords themselves. Hope you learn something interesting!

The actual keyboard is filmed with a Canon T5i, wired via MIDI to a computer running ChordieApp. The ChordieApp on-screen output is captured using Camtasia Recorder. Videos are combined via Camtasia Studio.

Enjoying this Mr. Mangold. Some very interesting colors. At around 10:30, you introduce an interesting chord: an E7b5b9. Something we don't very often hear. So let's just look at the triad: E-Ab-Bb. 1-3-b5. A chord with a unique quality. Of the qualities we're most familiar with (for triads) we have just 4: major, minor, diminished, augmented. Have I missed any? Far as I know 1-3-b5 doesn't have its own name (let me know if I'm wrong) so I will cheerfully suggest one. In my own playing, I've been calling this a "demented" chord. Kind of has a ring, don't you think? And thanks again for all you do!

Excuse me! Isn't the definition of Drop 2 is taking a closed-position chord and dropping the second-highest note down an octave in order to create an open-position chord? I am just asking to prevent confuson.
@MangoldProject
@MangoldProject 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. Did I do something different? I might have made a mistake in the video. I sure hope not.
@erhanmusician
@erhanmusician 4 жыл бұрын
MangoldProject For example (04:16) Dm7b5 is D F Ab C and the second highest is Ab not F and/or C. Yours is another progression but unfortunately not drop 2. I mean I'd say drop 3 but I'm not aware of anything like drop 1 or drop both together. Well if it works it's fine but I guess drop 2 is inappropriate naming for it.

Mr Mangold, It is very much appreciated that you have created these tutorial videos. Especially those which explain the theory of jazz (chords, voicings, etc) as you do in your video "Minor Jazz & The Minor 2-5-1: Voicings, Tips & Tricks" (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r92Pi5md1crUn40.html) What is the software that you use in this video? As you play all of the notes are shown on the treble clef staff and bass clef staff. This would be useful for learning music theory.

@@MangoldProject The pads are in the same range as the piano, which makes the piano sound muddy. It might sound good for an actual performance or song, but it's not good if you're trying to learn advanced piano chords and need to hear the voicings in detail. I love your content and believe your channel is the most informative piano channel on KZfaq, but the pads literally add nothing to your videos. You've built a good following for yourself, so no need to listen to just one guy. But as a subscriber I have to personally state that your videos have become unwatchable since you added pads and I truly wish it weren't so. Sorry :(
@MangoldProject
@MangoldProject 4 жыл бұрын
@@mli3083 Hi Mitchell. I've taken your comment into account. I don't usually add the pads, and I will avoid doing so unless I think it specifically adds to the video.
