This movie doesn't necessarily get a bad rep, but it's so underrated. Truly a great sci-fi movie. The interface they come up with to interact with holographics has already been inspiration for tons of other stories, movies, games, tech. It wasn't the first interpretation of it, but one of the best.

There are a lot of other good movies based on Philip K. Dick novels: Blade Runner; Total Recall; The Adjustment Bureau; Imposter; A Scanner Darkly. I was surprised how many there are, actually. There are over 25, most of whick I haven't seen. Also, the hotel manager is Tom Cruise's cousin William Mapother. And now off I go to clean my fridge.

This movie was on repeat when I first saw it! Shout out to you two for reviewing and uploading it. It got me outta a deep depression at 17. Such a horrible time in my life, but I would secretly order PPV on cable and it would wake me up and put me to sleep. This and “Inception” when I got a little older the depression came back! Just to clarify, the very first prevented murder wasn't a case of just the guy thinking of murdering his wife & her lover. We definitely see him try to stab her before Anderton grabs him. As John said to Danny, the precogs don't see what you intend to do, only what you will do. Of course, they weren't aware that minority reports exist. But those still concern alternate actions rather than thoughts. Both alternate actions that were shown to us, John not murdering Crowe & Lamar not murdering John, didn't involve minority reports and instead were cases of the perpetrators being informed of their futures by the precog visions.

My blind dad had to move in with me when the insurance he had paid for for 40 years only covered 6 months worth of medical care (America!). I used this movie for inspiration and tied rope strings to the bathroom and kitchen so he wouldn't walk into a wall or fall down the basement stairs. And I'll be honest, as a bachelor, my fridge didn't look much better than that guy's. I had to clean it out and make sure there was nothing expired he could grab.

I love all of the creepy moments in this film. The drug dealer that looks like he came out of an Alice in Chains music video, the bit with Agatha telling the woman not to go home, the eyeball removal, and so on. Also I appreciate the bittersweet ending, considering that the precogs have to go into hiding and all Agatha has left of her mother is the footage of her death. ... in the meantime, I hope the guy at the beginning got a divorce.

Originally, this was going to be a sequel to Total Recall, but Spielberg took the reins and made it into a standalone movie instead.

Guy at the beginning had his arm drawn back ready to plunge the scissors into the wife. An argument can be made for this murder being a foregone conclusion. But he still didn't actually do it.

You guys have to do War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise at some point. Spielberg and Cruise are a hell of a combo.

I wish you'd have shown. your reaction to Agatha's story about John's son and the future he never got. I tear up every time.

When Tom Cruise is yelling, "SEAN!" in this movie during the pool scene, I can't help but laugh. It's because of the meme of Ethan yelling Shaun over and over in the video game Heavy Rain ... I can't get it out of my head.

One of the underrated moments of the movie is its subplot: A detective having to solve his own crime, when he is not the victim, but the murderer. And also the depiction of a surveillance state that is going to the level of mind reading - one of Philip K. Dicks ("Blade Runner") themes, who wrote the short story this was based on. Other movies based on PKD using similar themes as this one are "Paycheck" and "Next". Movies also having a similar style in future technology are Steven Spielberg's "A.I.", a project he inherited from Stanley Kubrick, , and "I, Robot" with Wil Smith. You might want to put an eye on those movies, too … (pun intended) Btw, the woman in the mall warned by Agatha was Lucy Liu. (O-Ren Ishii from "Kill Bill", or one of Charlie's Angels) The isolation tanks are an idea back from the 70s, where they were actually used in research of ESP (extra sensory perception). That's why they show up in "Stranger Things".

There was a short-lived TV series based on the movie that takes place 10 years later, with one of the Precog twins Dash comes to help a couple of cops try to stop terrorists, government spies, corrupt cops, politicians and other occurrences. It was cancelled after 10 episodes.

Little fun fact. Spielberg got inspired for the car assembly line chase sequence by his friend George Lucas doing exactly the same in Star Wars Attack of the Clones. When Anakin and Padme have to fight their way out of the droid factory.

Agatha is the actress who plays Alpha in Walking Dead by the way

A few years ago there was a TV series sequel to this movie. One of the brothers couldn't handle still having the murder nightmares and became a vigilante to try to prevent the murders. He's found out by a cop and they team up. It lasted a season.

"Ads directed at you.. that'll be annoying". LOL. Welcome to 2022, it came true.

Stranger Things did not get inspired by Minority Report. The sensory deprivation setup the Pre-Cogs had was actually based on 1960’s sensory deprivation tanks that scientists used to analyze the brain as they studied the possibilities of telekinesis and other mental skills. The multi-tasking gestures used in Minority Report are not new either. It is tech the U.S. government was already using at DOJ and the Pentagon in the early 90’s. It’s tech that eventually will become available to the public, like most military equipment and tech does. They will have it and use it for decades then issue the old versions of that tool to the public. It’s new and amazing to us, but old and uninteresting to them. Much like the flying aircraft carrier from the Avengers movie and it’s cloaking tech. They had a special on the Military Channel all the way back in 2004 about them using that very same tech on Marine uniforms and different vehicles and aircrafts. The movies show you a small portion of what’s really out there, but will never divulge ALL.

The precogs see the future of events to their conclusion. The precrime police intervene before the point of conclusion. The perpetrator has no true idea on how the events will pan out. Anderton, on the other hand, had information of his destiny and chose not to kill Crow as he had already seen his future crime, and with that knowledge, he can make a different choice to change his future.

Saw this in theaters when it came out and I was blown away, too. Everything about it was just so mesmerizing, from the visual looks, the worlds building, some of the individual shots, the film noir approach, etc. And honestly, if you just did a Tom Cruise marathon and only watched his movies for a month straight, you couldn’t go wrong lol, Spielberg too for that matter.

I prefer the original short story for this one... they dumbed down the premise slightly for the movie. Here in this movie, the three precogs are essentially a 3 vote system on guilt. The precog that votes not guilty "sees" the crime better than the other two and that's why he's not guilty. The precogs are all seeing the same event in parallel. In the original short story, the precogs are in series, not parallel. The first precog sees that he is going to commit the murder. The second precog sees him not commit the murder because he found out he was going to do it. The third precog sees him investigate why he was going to commit the murder and in the course of the investigation, realizes that they guy needed killing - and he kills him anyway. So in the short story, Anderton is actually guilty of the murder, but for cause.

"Is this what Stranger Things was inspired by?" Stranger Things is the ultimate mash up of genre influences: Eleven's origin story most closely matches that of Charlie from Stephen King's "Firestarter." (They both reference MK Ultra, the CIA's experiments with mind altering drugs) Her powers are similar to Tetsuo and the kids from "Akira" who all had numbers tattooed to their hands like she had on her wrist. The way they were pitted against one another to push their potential is reminiscent of "Ender's Game." And the "hairnet" skull electrode interfaces look a lot like they do in this movie.

There is a school of thought that the end is just a dream (after Anderson gets haloed). The guy in the wheelchair even says that you dream when you’re under and “they say all your dreams come true”. Right after that his wife starts helping, he solves the crime and gets everything he wanted. 🤔🤷‍♂️ Dunno if it’s true but it fits the script and makes the ending super dark.

Cruise and Spielberg make great entertaining movies for decades

I knew how much of an amazing actor Collin Farrell from this movie. Then “In Bruges” cemented it.

From mission impossible 4 to 6. These are easily some of the best action movies ever made:) all 3 would be in the top 50.

If I remember correctly they consulted scientists, asking them what technology would probably be in every day use, based on current experimental research, that far into the future and how it might interact with us. They did a great job.

The actor Peter Stormare who plays the doctor who removes Tom’s eye. I met him on the tv show Prison Break. I used to work for a security company for the show. I have paperwork of his death party he threw in Chicago and I got to meet his mom. Peter always plays the bad guys but he was such a cool dude to talk to all the time

My only issue with this film is the ending. It's a sci-fi film noir, and film noirs do not have happy endings. I wanted a truly dark ending for the movie.

This is one of those movies that you will think about multiple times for the rest of your life, even if you don't like the movie. There are a few concept movies that just stick with you. Memento, Inception, Truman Show, Donnie Darko, Interstellar, Ex Machina, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Once you watch them, your brain just randomly drifts back to thinking about them whenever there's not much going on.

Fun Fact: Steven Spielberg actually seeked for advise on tech to display on the movie the technology that was predicted to be available for that time period the movie is set. On the last scene, you can see Agatha drowing the letters AI on the window. That´s a nod to Artifitial inteligence that was a blockbuster failure, but still think it´s one of his greatest and underrated movies...

Something lost on audiences today, I think, 20+ years later, is how the horrific events of Sep. 11, 2001 were very fresh and personal to everyone watching this movie. Should the police employ racial profiling? Should we suspect people for how they look or act? Should we punish otherwise innocent people simply for what they think or believe? Or for something they publish on the internet? What if we could be REALLY sure a terrorist act was about to be committed by a certain person? Put another way: Just how far are we willing to go as a society to prevent another 9/11 from every happening again? (Or a mass shooting, for that matter.) Are we willing to abandon our expectations of privacy? Our very civil rights? All in the name of "protecting society?" These are pretty essential questions, and I can't watch this movie today without being taken right back to 2002 when these questions were raw and fresh in every audience member's thinking.

Minority Report stands among the best science fiction.

This is not only one of Tom Cruise’s best movies but Spielberg’s best as well. When the surgeon sneezed into his hand I about died from equal parts laughing and disgust.

Not to mention that just because you intend to kill someone doesn't mean you will be able to. Failed assassination attempts are a perfect example.

I have had my eyes taken out of my head to adjust the muscles on each side of them. It's called bilateral eye surgery. I could not be in any light and had bandages on my eyes for a long time. It was very painful.

What it comes down to is interruption of reflex. Much murder is reflexive, not truly deliberative. Most people, upon reflection, decide the repercussions of murder is not worth the act. Without reflection, without deliberation, emotional reflex too often leads to death (see statistics on gun violence). Rather than criminalizing it, potential murderers should be put in therapy, not halo'ed imprisonment. To return to the example of the rolling ball caught as it falls off the counter: if the guy had been started by a yell of "Don't touch that!", his reflex to catch it would have had him allow it to fall. Intervention is great, but incarceration is not the best consequence. Love you guys loving this. It is a really tight, excellent film.

the thing that annoys me most about this movie, why did they not remove Anderson from the "authorised list" for the security at the police station when he became a fugitive, or after he broke in the first time? his wife is still able to use his eyes to gain entry to him at the end. who the hell is in charge of the security for that building?
