Why would the UK and US continue to pump out ships in the closing stages of WW2, even when they knew that the war was almost won (and the Axis navies already rested on the ocean floor) only to then scrap them in the early 1950s?

My Dad did his National Service on the Super-B in the 1950's, went to the Carribean then down around the cape and up the West coast to Vancouver. My father in-law did his in the Army and ended up picking potatoes. Hence my interest in the RN and Dad did take me to Navy Days at Chatham in the 60's or 70's. I took and passed my AIB at HMS Sultan but decided to do my degree at Southampton first and joined the SURNU on HMS Woodlark in the 80's (was on the Woodlark in Amsterdam when the Falklands kicked off). After experiencing BRNC whilst part of the URNU decided to take a civvy job with BAe but often wonder about that other road I nearly took, but doubt I would have been as lucky as Dads cruise on the Super-B

I have an undated photo of one of the minotaurs during her Helsinki visit probably in the 1950s before the 1952 olympic games. Cold war was in full swing and Finland bordering Soviet union had most of the war-related controls lifted. Baltic countries were occupied, which had mostly stopped the overseas cooperation. Minotaur visit was certainly important geopolitically.

I've always found something a little sad about most of these mid/late-war designs. Things moved so quickly from 1940 to 1950 that most of these ships were approaching out-of-date nearly upon launch, and they led correspondingly short lives.

Out of date? What other nation threatened USN or RN after 1945? Russians? Don't make me laugh. Maybe by late 70's you can ~ sort of complain, but the force ratio was still so lopsided as to be laughable. Now submarine warfare.... is an entirely different matter.

@@bkjeong4302 Oh... I'm just ragging on BBs in the age of air-power in general. :) Actually... it was only the earlier of the "last Dreadnoughts" (thinking especially US SoDak and Wash) that fulfilled the envisioned role of the type -- fighting other Dreadnoughts, at Guadal. And the Battle of Surigao Strait had even older ships. Then there is the demise of the Bismarck. It depends on if "obsolete" means "still employed after its intended purpose expired".

No, not at all. Many, many people just like to study naval history. However, since there are some many computer warship games, and since they are generally completely inaccurate (at least in part) it is hard not to take them as a meme. Especially when some ship (looking at you, speed boost/French ships) are complete memes due to the sHP required to move them as fast as WoWs thinks they do.

The original Minotaur could be brought into WoWS as a Commonwealth ship (HMCS Ontario - she was commissioned as Ontario upon completion). She would basically be a modernized equivalent to the recently added Mysore (and earlier Crown Colony class - represented by the Fiji in game, although they actually varied in turret count with some 3x3 and others 4x3). Tier 7 with big consumables tool box - hydro, radar and crawling smoke, maybe DFAA to reflect that late war AA - and she'd be interesting as a support ship so long as her reload rates were tuned right on the nine 6" guns.

Commonwealth T7 (HMCS Ontario - the commissioned name of the Minotaur). Take the Mysore, give her radar and better AA (maybe DFAA). Even with a rate of fire buff, she'd be a bit light on firepower compared to a Fiji but she'd have a better toolbox of consumables.

Generally seen as very much an incremental improvement in the 1943 completed 3 Ceylon class Improved Colony class, the Minotaur/ Tiger 8 ordered cruisers were in some less than obvious ways quite significantly redesigned for late Pacific war use but the much greater internal subdivision, protection, pumps and electrical capacity, development of first real modern operation room and combination of power operated turrets with the guns training automatically in line with local and follow surface and air (poor UK version of 275- variant US Mk 37) from 1945 Minotaur/ Superb and about 1950 on Swiftsure by which time the fit of the 3, particularly the Swiftsure and Superb which with Kenya and the two reconstructed and much widened late Towns Liverpool (1942-45)/and Belfast (1940) are definitely the most capable and refitted cruisers 1948-50. But those changes which meant the 3 Minotaurs and 3 largely hull and internal constructed Tigers by 1944 only had space for 3/centerline main turrets and even a Mk 23/24 Turret with 3 inch armour, 170 ton were far too expensive in weight, space, Manning for these improved 8000 ton Fijis. The reason Superb was not reconstructed post war is that Belfast and Sheffield were larger more comfortable gin palaces, and while far too old for the major rebuild they received from 1956 with minimal return in operational service and by 1957 Superb while 12 rather than 20 years old, was already too old, in general terms and specifically as a late war built Colony/Tiger with a max planned life of 20 years in hard Nato North Atlantic use

Penultimate Cruisers? How about Bristol type 82 - is borderline Cruiser, or even the Invincible Class Carriers they were through-deck-cruisers ;) - All the politics of calling things cruisers or destroyers and being disingenious.

WoWs is a historically accurate game regarding modeling ships...questionable...

Not even close. Wow is absurd. The modeling characteristics of the ships is ridiculous. It's just a game

In-game mino is design ZA, it says so on the wiki page, the guns actually existed, on the tiger class, as drach mentions in the video. there are many inaccuracies and completely made up ships, in-game mino is not one of them.

I think mainly because UK was bankrupt, and reduced commitments due to giving independence to the colonies... Please note UK did not finish paying off WW2 loans until 1990's.

Why on Earth would you built a cruiser with 6 inch guns - that are not dual purpose - in 1941? Why not either build more Dido's (that have DP guns) or 8 inch cruisers? 🤔

Rate of fire, plus the 6 " guns had similar range, putting more tonnage of shells on target.

OK, we pronounce Minotaur like the yanks do now, that's interesting. I thought they might be "both valid", but increasingly not, it seems. English spoken by the English is not anymore; we need to speak like foreigners do now, because they're not both valid, cultural imperialism by foreigners is.
