Whoever finds the definitive cure for hair loss deserves a Nobel Prize in medicine and free groceries and healthcare for life.

As someone who has been on the hair loss journey for about 15 years…minoxidil was my first solution for my diffused thinning hair. It absolutely regrew my hair and it took over 5 years before my hair started to get back to the same point it was in terms of noticeable thinning. I highly recommend jumping on it and waste no time. It is going to take a minimum of 3-6 months before you see a difference. If you are destined for hair loss it will not likely keep it forever but it will help a lot.

I started using generic Minoxidil 2% and then 5% when I was in my mid-30's. While I was concerned about my thinning hair, I still had a full head of hair, I could just tell things were going downhill. Since it is difficult to get product onto scalp, I would just use it at night and I would put anywhere from 3ml to 5ml. A lot of the product was wasted because it soaked into hair. Maybe I was one of those good responders but within 3 months I could tell something was happening and by 6 months I knew something was happening. I continued to use for about 10 years. I would get lazy and stop using it for a few months and then I could tell the hairs were getting thinner and so I would start back up. Once I had been using for a little while I was not worried about applying every night. As long as I did on a regular basis, it seemed to work and I was very happy with the results. However, I stopped using product for several years and my hair thinned quite a bit. If I would have taken action, I am sure I could of got things going again, but I had a lot of things going on. I gained a huge amount of weight and although I was a happy person, I just stopped caring about the way I look. I am 59 today and I buzzed my head when I was in the hospital and for some reason I liked the convenience of having a shaved head. Not sure how it looks to others, but I like so that is what matters. If I had decent head of hair, then I would prefer that, but I got tired of my hair thinning out so much on top. I still had hair, it just looked thin, so I prefer the shaved look.

I will add my personal experience. I started using minoxidil when it was by prescription and I was in my 30s. I am now in my 60s so I have been using it about 30 years. Did I get my college days thick hair back, no. Did it stop my from further thinning, yes. So I kept the hair I had at that time and still have a much better head of hair than most of my contemporaries. I feel the individual hairs are becoming more fine but that is no doubt due to age. Plus I added Finesteride to my regime about 12 years ago. So if you are expecting the hair of your youth your expectations are too high. If you are expecting a decent head of hair try it.

Hi Gary, what do you think about 5% topical minoxidil (liquid) mixed with 0.0125% Medroxyprogesterone? My downside so far is a bit of residue left on the scalp (visible if tanned, I guess alcohol removes the tan a bit too!) and the hair feels a bit drier. I have very long hair and I should wash it very often which is a bit annoying. Also, is there a way to increase the sulfotransferase enzyme availability (maybe through food etc)? Any opinion regarding low laser therapy as Hairmax Bands? Thank You - You're amazing!

This is a fantastic video, Dr. Gary. The only minor detail about Minoxidil's side effects is the difference between the recipe and medication. If you have irritation, dandruff, or itchiness, that is the recipe's fault, and if you have headaches or dizziness, that is from the medication. Interestingly, the biggest Minoxidil brands are all manufacturing their product in the same facility in Israel using the EXACT SAME RECIPE. The recipe has not been changed, improved, or revolutionized for the past 20 years, and that's a shame. I suggest to my audience to order one bottle from 4-5 brands, test each for 4-5 days to see which one their skin likes the most, and only after that order for six months. During the initial quarantine in the U.S. I ordered the 2% liquid off of Amazon to see what it would do. I started noticing my hair getting thinner since around 2018. I got the generic and took a pic in July 2020. My hair was thin in the area if you were to place a headband on (ear to ear) and go forward. Took weekly pics and didn't see much change at all until October. By December of last year all my hair has thickened back to the point where it looks like there was never an issue with thinning. I guess I responded well.

Fuck! So,. I started Oral minoxidil two months ago, but also take excedrin (with aspirin) for recurring headaches. Do I need to increase my dosage (minoxidil 1.25 twice daily) to adapt for this???

I grew a full beard with the use of minoxidil, took about a year to get the results I wanted, I think I could still take more to thicken it up a bit more, but overall I'm super impressed and I haven't taken minoxidil in years and my beard is still here, I love minoxidil its changed my life! I only could grow hair on my neck area, had almost no mustache, and no cheek hair, I'm rocking the full beard now I highly recommend this to guys that want to grow a full beard and cant! Minoxidil is super amazing I love it, 5% Kirkland foam is the stuff I used, I also used the 5% liquid but its a little more annoying to apply and also feels like your face is wet for about an hour, and it also did burn a bit after application, the foam is much better, what's interesting is I did notice hair growing in places I didn't really want, like the top of my hands and my ear lobes, and even had some sprouting on my nose a bit, but those were just vellus hairs and they all fell out once I stopped using minoxidil, as long as you apply it to the area that you want hair, it will grow, don't worry about the tiny hairs growing in other spots they will go away!

I just finished my 6th month of Minoxidil for female pattern hair loss. I noticed no change after 3 months with 2%, so I increased the dose, as recommended by my derm. Because I began treatment so early in hair loss (it runs in my family so I knew what to do), I’ve been able to reverse it pretty well. I don’t have unwanted hair growth, but I have noticed that my eyebrows and eyelashes look better than they ever have in my life. This video was so helpful! I guess the women in my family just respond well to minoxidil, as it’s what we all use.

Great video: I have a Minoxidil story to share [true by the way! lol] This little story is the reason I watched this video in the first place! Back in the day (approx 1977) I was a registered nurse at a VA hospital in St Louis. Usually the vast majority of our patients were men, but occasionally we had female patients. Here the patient was an obese African American female with malignant hypertension. FYI: Malignant hypertension is a term that has been used to describe patients with elevated blood pressure (BP) and multiple complications (End organ damage) with a poor prognosis. Today, the term hypertensive crisis is used to describe patients who present with severe BP elevations as follow: Systolic blood pressure greater than 180 mm Hg Diastolic blood pressure greater than 120 mm Hg No medicines were working for her. So the head physician on her team obtained her written consent to try minoxidil. I don't recall the dosage. But.....within 7 to 10 days she displayed facial hair growth (like you would see on an adolescent male starting puberty). Her BP dropped considerably: we did supine, sitting, standing AND following a brief walk in her room. We were amazed BUT SHE became more and more dismayed due to the beard growth. I have to admit I forget the outcome for her---not sure if we finally reached a middle ground, say where her BP was still elevated but NOT in the alarming malignant hypertension range. And yes she DID have to shave. But of one thing I'm certain --- none of us ever forgot her. (Case in point is me writing this 45 years later!) She had a naturally funny personality. 🧔🏾‍♀🤶🏾 In THOSE days she probably stayed on our medical unit for at least a month! We all grew to love her.

Androgenic alopecia unfortunately runs in my family. My mother started using minoxidil 3 years ago and it significantly improved her hair loss. But due to other severe side effects she had to stop using it. Shortly after starting the treatment she started feeling dizzy, tired and getting headaches regularly. After a while she started fainting multiple times and had to be admitted to the hospital. Turned out she had severely low blood pressure. Her dermatologist ruled out the possibility that minoxidil was the cause of it, but after months of regular fainting she decided to stop using it just to try it out and her condition normalised. I hoped that I was less sensitive to the drug and tried it myself, but unfortunately I started experiencing the same side effects so I stopped before it could worsen. Seems like some people are extremely sensitive to the drug and need an alternative formulation. My mom and I are now looking for alternative methods that could improve hair loss without vasodilation.

Excellent information. I am a 57 year old post menopausal woman with genetic (both parents have hair loss) hair thinning. I use HRT including a fairly high dose of testosterone (helps with tons of things like muscle growth, energy, mental clarity and sex drive). But this increases my risk of hair thinning. I have found that a low dose of finesteride, oral prescription progesterone (the “pregnancy hormone” which most women know decreases hair loss) and minoxidil has made a big difference for me. I work 4 days a week and wash my hair about twice a week. I did find that the minoxidil caused greasy hair. So I don’t use it on the days that I don’t wash my hair. If I know that I am going to wash my hair the next morning, I use it that night. Then on weekends when I am not going anywhere or I can wear a hat or just don’t care if my hair looks oily, I use it twice a day. This ends up being that I use it about 8 - 9 times a week, on my 3 days off I use it twice daily. I use the 5% and have never had any side effects. I don’t have thick hair but I never have really. I can have it a little longer than shoulder length and it looks good. Just wanted to offer another experience because this can be very frustrating.

Does it mean I better to stop using 3% salicylic acid shampoo? I have dandruff problem and I found it salicylic acid shampoo very useful in controlling dandruff.

Oh, wow, it's so weird to see my picture in your video...! 😳 I think the eyebrow Minoxidil picture could benefit from some more context though: I was plucking my eyebrowsto a thin "thread" for probably 5-6 years (90's girl here), and the roots got damaged, resulting in spiderweb-thin hairs. I thought my brows would grow back on their own eventually, but when that didn't happen after 4 years, I thought I would experiment! So, the Minoxidil either re-activated my roots or did something else...permanetly, because I stopped using it soon after 3 years, and my brows have stayed largely the same since (6 years ago?). I've seen similar experiences from others since 😊 The hairs are maybe a little thinner and sparser now, but I still clearly have eyebrows 😊 So, for someone starting out with non-damaged eyebrow hairs, I believe the results would be much less dramatic, BUT Minoxidil might be a great way to revive once damaged brows 😉 After my review, I've seen other people try it on different forums, and it worked well for them too 😊 Might also be something to tey if you have traction alopecia, maybe...? BTW: I mention it in my review too, but: DO NOT GET THE MINOXIDIL IN YOUR EYES. It stings. Badly. I applied it in the evening and if I rubbed my eyes in the morning, it was still there.

I started taking this 7-8 years ago. It seemed to slow my loss down but definitely did not stop it.

I had no idea an oral version was even available. I knew it had it's roots in BP medicine, but thought it would have to be prescribed orally as "off label" usage. My 16 year old son started to experience severe hair loss which he found very distressing. I purchased Minoxidil 5% topical solution and initially started with an application both morning and night. After 4 weeks , reduced this to one application at night due to scalp sensitivity. After 3 months his hair was noticeably thicker, after 6 months or so his hair was back to normal. I switched brands and interestingly his hair loss started again at an alarming rate. I was afraid that his hair would not come back. Thankfully, we switched back to the original brand and his hair is full, thick and very healthy, even his barber is amazed.

I had a clean face before so I tried minoxidil variant on my facial area in an attempt to gain a facial hair, after 5 months of thinking its all futile effort, small hair follicles started growing on my beard and sideburn area and it started to regularly grow every time I shave it. Wow this is the best and most informative video I’ve ever seen on minoxidil, thank you so much! ❤️ I have chronic telogen effluvium from hypothyroidism, plus AA, and have been using the foam for the past 10 years even before it was ‘officially’ approved for women. It has helped decrease the severity of the CTE flares when they happen (roughly once a year) I have enough coverage that I don’t need to use hair fibers.

I started experiencing age-related hair loss which got progressively worse over time - especially in my crown area (top of head and mostly the back part). It started in my late 40s and I'm now 60. I finally went to my dermatologist last year. She told me to start using Rogaine (I'm using the 5% foam) and prescribed Spironolactone 50 mg tablet twice a day. I started this regimen at the very beginning of December 2021. It's now August 2022. I've noticed that I am experiencing "less" hair loss, but the hair growth isn't much. The back of my head and the top still feel pretty thin - maybe only a little better (there definitely seems to be more bounce to run my fingers through). But what I positively hate is when I'm just going about my business and I feel a hair fall on my shoulders, my neck, or my nose or as I'm typing on my computer (for example), I see one fall from my head onto my hand. It's scary especially when I'm cooking although I have learned to wear a hair net. The worst part is once you start this regimen, you have to keep it up for the rest of your life otherwise, over time, your hair will revert to where it was before you started. Feeling kind of stuck.

First off, thank you so much for all the wonderful videos. I've been in and out of dermatologists' practices about my very suboptimal hair since I was a teen and I am sick of being told "it's your genetics, suck it up" when I had decent hair as a young kid and androgenic alopecia doesn't even seem to run in the family. Your videos are so much more constructive and give me hope. I've been on the 5% Rogaine foam for six years and it made a tangible difference when I started for sure (noticed by my hairdresser at the time). I unfortunately go through excess shedding phases whenever I am under a great deal of stress so it is hard to tell whether these would be worse or the same w/o minoxidil and I have never been in love with my hair to this day but it definitely does *something* for me, even if it only really lasts for a few months at a time. I have a couple questions for future videos as regards optimizing the minoxidil results.... 1) You mention avoiding salicylic acid. Does this also apply to topical uses (e.g. skincare containing salicylic acid, specifically acne treatments) or just medication that you ingest? I wonder whether using a new cream combining SA and retinol may have reduced efficacy over this past year. 2) I know finasteride is off limits for women. What about topical DHT blockers? I see a lot of allegedly DHT-blocking hair serums advertised but I am worried about mixing minoxidil with other topical solutions (if I should at all and what to consider when choosing a serum). 3) Similar to 2, how well can you "mix" topical minoxidil with other hairloss treatments? I'm specifically interested in trying PRP and LLLT. I've tried at-home microneedling for about 9 months (once a week) and could not really see additional improvements but my mental health was also at an all-time low throughout that period and maybe I wasn't doing right, so I might opt to have it done by a trichologist and a little less frequently, given that the studies are so promising.

Amygrow is great natural hair growth oil. I do see short strands of hair coming back. So it will take a while to see growth coming back. As for the price, it is a good value for your money. My only issue is that it can make the hair have a little tacky feeling. However, that goes away when your hair has dried. I have read up on other products but decided to purchase this one. I am happy because it works.

Great video! Very informative. Over the last 18 months, I've tried both the topical solution and foam versions of Minoxidil on the crown of my head, on which my hair has begun thinning (I'm 31). I began by using the topical solution. It worked very well, but the propylene glycol was making my scalp incredibly itchy, and so I switched to the foam. Since I did that (about 3 or 4 months ago), I'm shedding more than before, but I no longer have any scalp irritation. On balance, I prefer having worse results and not having to deal with the itching, which was ultimately causing me to scratch and damage my scalp anyway.

Thanks for this so much! I had to take immuran about 15 years ago for RA and my hair thinned by about 30% while on it. After I stopped taking immuran, about half of what I lost regrew. But all these years later, I've always wondered if monoxidl might help regrow what didn't come back. It sounds as if there's only a low chance it might help, but at least I understand that a little more now.

Hi Dr. I'm a 18 yr old , am experiencing stage 2 hairloss(thinning of hair and receding hairline throughout the top head and crown), expected by my genetics(both maternal and paternal sides men being fully bald) .... The full head of hair I once had is not gone, it has just migrated to my ears and nose. Using minoxidil in those areas has allowed me to grow an amazing mustache and sideburns.

I am on the 5% topical and after about 2 and a half months I see results, nothing out of this world, but clear progress.

Been using Rogaine for over a decade now. Worked amazingly early on, but results begun to diminish as I approached my 30s. Had to implement Finasteride, though hairline is crap at this point. Giving hair transplant serious consideration at this point.

As a woman with light thinning , topical Minoxidil, bhringraj, rosemary and keratin has made my hair nice and full. If I ever lose more, I know I can use and style wigs. Also, I use scrunchies or clips to bind my hair and gently bind it.

I am to this day not 100% sure if I was actually balding or if it was the result of growing my hair long and putting it in a top knot held by a rubber band which ripped out so many hairs each time I took it out. Anyway, doctor suggested rogain. I took it and I just got worse and worse. I lightly applied it to my temples as well. My issue is no male in my family was bald. Not my dad or two uncles or my grand dad. And on my mum's side, none of her male brothers of father either. However, she and three of her sisters (twin) and two others have very thin hair. My two older brothers have got a better head of hair than me (though one is thin like my mum) To this day, I still think it was a mistake taking Rogain as I am now completely bald on the crown the size of my palm, but have good frontal hair at 40. Though my temples are thin too now where I also applied Rogain but it was not that bad till 3-4 years ago. I had stopped rogain after a few years due to no results, just shedding. I decided to take Finasteride and have now been on it for a year, have not seen anything really. I don't know why nothing is working correctly. All the "Anti Hair Loss" stuff I take seems to have done more harm than good. But I never really shed a lot of hairs to begin with, it was always slow. I do know that I was told I had an inflammed crown once or twice by dermatologists a few years later and I was suffering from itching a year or two before I started to go bald. But all I know is, 16 years later and I wake up everyday stressing about my hair loss and no amount of "Don't think about it" helps. Not even sure if I should ever try rogain again or leave it be. But nothing seems to work.

Hi Dr Gary, love your videos, I'm truly learning a lot. I'm a 26 year old woman with traction alopecia and thinning, plus I have fine hair. My mom (72) has female pattern baldness but my grandma and aunties do not, neither do my sisters. I seem to be the only one suffering from it and i do have trichotillomania as well so that doesn't help lol. Would Minoxidil be a good recommendation for me or would the irritating side effect be of concern because of my trichotillimania (I'm getting this under control for the most part) ? Thank you :)

I started going bald when I was 17. It bothered me until I was 21 when I shaved it all off. After 20+ years of aerodynamic slickness, I don't know if I want hair again.

I've been doing that for two years along with PRP and 2 hair transplants, very happy with the results of the 3 combined, but I'm curious how much the medical therapies are vs the transplant, which seems to have done the most. I had stage four lymphoma and I went through six months of Chemotherapy and I lost all my hair but after I finished chemotherapy I started minoxidil right away and it helped my hair grow back faster than normal for most post-chemo patients!!!

I subscribed to your channel because I like your teaching technique your explanations are simple to understand so thank you. In the 1980s when they were developing the topical formulation I was involved in research and offered to be one of the test subjects but had to many hair follicles and was rejected from the study at the time I was a young man who had the beginnings of male pattern baldness. It can be emotionally difficult going through the baldness stages but I would not want hair again today I dont see being Bald as a disadvantage but having hair to me would be bothersome. I think the shape of your skull may play a role in why some men dont look good Bald.

Both 2% and 5% made me dizzy after 6- 7 weeks. When I stopped using it, the dizziness went away, although I did see hair regrowth as baby hairs.
