With grading being so ridiculously popular. You're basically turning books into posters. McFarlane has some amazing covers which I feel is why the Batman and hulk have the values they do. It's also why he has so many other books doing Homage covers to his artwork. Great video.

As someone currently saving up for a (low grade) ASM #1, I think I can speak on this. It's as expensive as it is due to demand; there are a ton of people, myself included, whose primary goal in collecting is to complete ASM, and you can't do it without #1. Further driving up ASM #1 is that for most people, myself included, AF 15 is out of range. I can save 10K for a low grade ASM #1, but 50K for an AF15 is out of my league. ASM #1 has become a (very expensive) consolation book of sorts for Spidey fans. I'd also add that it's a very easy book to re-sell, if you ever want out of it.

Great video! I too loved the splash screens of "Please don't hurt me"....(8x if I counted correctly). I must say it was a master class in walking the tightrope between your opinion vs what me be 'popular' opinion. My favorite line.."WOW...I woke up and chose violence today". Noicely done! My thought on prices is that during the Covid boom I think many people started to become more interested in comic collecting. They saw what collectables values might offer and started to become more interested in collecting for profit (and maybe just re-sparked their interest in the hobby from their childhood days). Have a great day!!

As someone who collects cartoon books, I do think it’s worth mentioning that the high prices for books like SpongeBob #1 are based on scarcity not only purely centered around high grade, but also just scarcity in general. Books like that often had/have print runs barely breaking even 4,000, and since they were made for kids, finding a high grade copy becomes nearly impossible. People sleep on cartoon books!

I've read all four issues of Night Nurse in a compilation volume that Marvel put out in 2015; 1 to 3 were quite enjoyable hospital drama stories, 4 was a Gothic-style tale trying to cash in on the Dark Shadows-inspired trend of the early 70s. $30,000 for #1 in 9.8? I laughed a lot. As for newsstand vs. direct editions, I don't care - they're the same comic. The different bar codes make not a whit of difference to the stories and art. Nearly all these graded books are so far out of my price range that their price increases are merely an interesting side note to my reading and collecting.

I think some people during the covid boom thought, once again, they were "investing" to put their kids through college or whatever. So they paid what they shouldn't in a frenzy. The Wolverine #1 for example... it's not getting "more rare". More of this book are being graded daily. I have ungraded raws. Normally as a market gets flooded prices drop. But comics aren't doing that. It's now tough to see books that are out of my price range and not something I want to risk buying to see it drop back to sane prices.

Ah, Batman #423. Years ago I had the money to either choose between that in a 9.8 or Venom #7 Variant of him holding the gauntlet. I chose the Venom issue since at the time it was a hot item. Not one of my best decisions. I had no idea that Batman issue would spike like that. Eventually I got mine but paid far more than the original offer (not 2k though). Personally that one is my favorite McFarlane Cover even though it was a rush job. Still a little grouchy I had the chance to get that at $575 but paid almost 3x as much.

I acquired ASM 1 in a 5.5 in 2015 for 9K, it went to 28K during the pandemic and seems to sit at around 20K now. Those COVID prices were crazy. There are some 5.5 I’ve seen lower than 20K because sellers are in need of money. I’d love an AF15 but can’t afford one. I’ve been collecting ASM for over 40 years.

I think Marvel/SONY is laying low on Silk, maybe to let her shine in her own light. Obviously they could have introduced her during the spiderverse movie or the upcoming one. But it seems like they are keeping her separate. That tv series was announced a while back, but who knows if that's still happening. Hopefully SONY don't ruin her like morbius or venom ii. She seems under rated now, but i think she has a lot of potential.

I agree with most of the books you have on this list. On the Batman 423 the one thing that you are missing is that there are only 283 blue labels and 92 sig series on the census, and there are definitely more than 283 people out there wanting a 9.8 a copy of this book out there. So this is strictly a supply and demand issue on the Batman 423 I do find it odd there are so few 9/8 in so many submissions and so many 9.6 and 9.4 on the census. When you look at all the other box in this area around this one, the percent of 9.8 to 9.6 is much higher than this book. I feel like for some reason CGC is intentionally keeping the population low on this book.

When I started collecting comic books about three years ago, Wolverine was one of the few titles I was familiar with. So I wonder if it's people with deep pockets, the popularity of Hugh Jackman, and little knowledge of comic books that are keeping the value of the Frank Miller Wolverine #1 up so high. It's the same thing with Derek Jeter. I mentioned something on Geoff Wilson's KZfaq videos about Jeter's Topps rookie card being the only recognizable card I bought when I got back into cards about 10 years ago and on his next video, Mr. Wilson showed off 5 or 6 psa 10's!

Totally disagree. I bought my Wolverine #1 off the rack in 1982. It is his first solo title and an iconic cover. 1982 was 42 years ago and counting. 13k copies 9.4 or higher is not going higher by much more. Especially in newsstand. $1k is going to hold and the book at 9.8 with less than 4k copies is a tight market given there are hundreds of thousands of collectors who want it.

Wolverine 1 was the most spec'd on book around that era when it came out. First appearances were important for the biggest characters but #1s were bigger in general and the X-Men appearances in anything were key. My older brothers friend that collected reserved/bought 50 copies of it from our LCS. I hadn't talked with him in decades but did so recently/briefly and he said that a lot or most of them got water damaged at some point in time which I found strange as I would have thought they were all bagged/boarded.

Smaller for how long? Night Nurse wastop-notch from one of the greatest years in comics. There are only 6 copies in a 9.8 and less than 50 at 9.4 or higher. 20 years from now, ABC could announce a primetime drama for Night Nurse, or she might get another series. Who knows? As a comic book with low print and high disposal rate it is rare. That is undeniable. NN was also towards the end of the "normal life" depictions in comics, which means there is sentimentality for the Silver Age Romance/Good Girl, even though it is early Bronze. People blow $30 on cars that depreciate and go to the dump, but getting one of the SIX Night Nurse #1's in a 9.8 lasts for centuries.

The price of Batman 423 is high, but that price has been set by the high demand for it. It's an early McFarlane cover that has been used as an homage cover many times over. It is, however, a bit of a shame that dollar for dollar this book has a higher value than say Detective Comics 359. But it seems for now people want Batman 423 more than they want Detective 359.

Besides Golden, Silver and Bronze Age, what dictates an old comic? Comics from 1999 are now roughly 25yrs. Old. What is a normal print run? What is a standard of a low print runs? Low print runs should hike up prices but by how much? 5%,10% or 15%? How much should an authentic autograph raise a comic book? Again percentages 5%,10% or even 15%? It’s strange that comics have a grading standard but no standards on low print runs or autographs? Should artists/writers that have sadly passed autographs be in a higher standard? We love comics but grading them isn’t enough? Mark Jewelers? .30 and .35 cent variants how do we put prices on these? Controversial? Error Editions? Prices go up but by how much? Iconic Covers? Yikes! This needs to be addressed!! What do you think James? Comic Community?

I collected for about ten years years starting in 2001. (I was 49 and become interested in them after I bought some for a customer's son who was having problems in school. I thought comics might lead him to "real" books.) I was aware of expensive vintage books but never bought any. I started collecting again in April of 2023. The number of variants was a bit of a shock. And the prices for some of the modern variants seemed insane to me. $500 for a virgin variant when the same art with print on the cover was $5. What??? But if people can afford it, who am I to tell them how to spend their money? It's all a bit baffling.
@danpetitpas

The price of back issues all boils down to supply and demand: How many people are chasing which comics and what they're willing to pay for them. Age and print runs can explain some valuations, but walk into any comic book store and you can see plenty of 40-year old comics selling for a buck or less. The newest twist, and what you're probably reacting to, is that some fans have worked their way into very good paying jobs and they have a lot of money to pay for the most desirous issues. This has raised prices on many runs beyond what the average person can afford. But the market sets the prices, and if a dealer overprices something, he's not going to be able to sell it until the price comes down. And we've seen that fair-weather comics fans with lots of money came into the market during COVID, drove prices higher, and now prices have fallen back to pre-COVID levels for a lot of books. So don't think in terms of age, print runs, autographs and so on. Think about a book in terms of how much are you willing to pay for a book.

Batman 423. Do you think the comic books worth more because of the errors on it? the moon not completely colored correctly. There's two issues with coloring. Once you see them you can't on seen it, Todd said it himself lol I wonder if that's why there were so much.?¿? 🤔

High prices, but it's the price if you want the book at this moment in time. I like Spongebob!

Corection "the era of the direct edition ", during that time 1979, the newstand was way more availible than the Direct. those comics with the line drawn through the upc are more rare by a long shot. gotta disagree with you on that one.

Correction to your correction! hahaha - Sure newsstands were still more prevalent up until 1984 until directs took over, but the 1979 direct editions and comics shops started the craze of keeping books pristine. Perfect example, in 1979 there's way more newsstands on 194, but yet there's WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more 9.8s that belong to the direct editions! goes to show you the new way of thinking!

Basing this on 9.8s is unrealistic. Get real. Maybe if you didn't buy 9.8s you'd have a million bucks.
