This is the kind of video I like finding on KZfaq about comics... nothing about spec or investing or grading. One of my faves you will never find on a spec list- Atari Force #2. Great art by Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, interesting characters, and a fun story. First DC comic I picked up off the rack as a kid.

Amen. I was terrified this was going to be another list of favorite spec books. Instead, I get a guy who loves the medium, talking about his favorite books. They aren’t all keys….yes. This is the kind of conversation I wish I could have with my own friends.

I always love these countdown type videos. Certainly I've read thousands of comics, but I think it'd be difficult for me to come up with an actual Top 50. It's difficult to rate them in order, especially when certain storylines take multiple issues. Be fun to try, though.

Now this a 50 comics list from an actual comic fan. Really depressing when it's obvious some collectors are just trying to get all the highest price books without actually knowing comics! The art. The writing. The history of a character (the lack of this could be talked about by me for hours). Be a true comic fan people! Great list man.

Great list, definitely some issues I need to pick up. You seem to have very similar taste to what I like in comics. Some of the standouts for me were Daredevil 161 (one of the first comics I had when I was 7) and Swamp Thing 37 (my dad bought it for me when new and it turned me into a more serious comic collector). Definitely agree about Alan Moore, probably my favorite writer ever.

If I had to choose a couple of favorites, off the top of my head would be, Batman Vol 2 #5, where Batman is trapped in the court of owls labyrinth. Man, it was done so well, and it was so creepy. The flipping of the pages made it seem like you were losing your mind alongside Batman. And I think Ultimate Spider-Man #1 is definitely one of my favorites as well. Congratulations on 10k!!

Great video James. You have a great memory. My memory is awful. Even after reading stories multiple times I still can only remember bits and pieces. One comic that really struck me and it was a surprise was The Dark Knights Death Metal The Secret Origin 1 shot. I had never read anything with Superboy Prime before but I thought it was a great story with great art. It makes you really sympathize with the character.

One of my favorite comics of all time is the original Superman # 149. It's an imaginary story about the death of Superman.I can never forget that comic, the cover, all those super people from all over the universe that come to his funeral.Everything with Supergirl taking over at the end. It's just a perfect comic book. I like it way better than the modern death of superman. My second is the first appearance of Green Lantern. When he gets that powering ring and it does whatever he wishes for it to do, I thought that was amazing. It was like having your own geni. I could get an old ring when I was a kid and I would be off in my own world, and I would be Green Lantern. .It didn't matter what color my ring was. My own imagination did the rest.

Great video, thanks for introducing me to some obscure issues and I appreciate your explanation as to why they're personally significant to you. Happy to see books being rated on content rather than value. Personally I find the Claremont Byrne x-men run iconic. Still stands up but at the time wow! An Avengers #177 that always stood out for me was the one where Korvak beats them half to death and its Thor in his Donald Blake persona thats the most use. Aside Terry Austin is my favourite inker ever, Byrne was just average without him. He always went above and beyond to add details to sometimes the barest of pencils. Got to agree with sword of Azreal, that was a really hot book for a while.

I think most of the books I like no one else would EVER have on their list. Crimson 7 (the Christmas issue, but honestly that whole run was just amazing and I will always have that in my personal collection), Rising Stars 8 (I believe it’s 8 where they are figuring out how an invulnerable hero has died, but again, that WHOLE RUN is ridiculously awesome and I will have that compendium on tap as well!), Titans Elseworld: Paper Scissors Stone, I mentioned action comics 775 in an earlier comment because it is my NUMBER ONE book to have and read. Amazing spider man 36 (which is expensive now but that issue is AMAZING and it’s got nothing to do with spider man and everything to do with captain America and his handling of the “situation” in the issue. Don’t wanna ruin it for those who have not read it.), darkness 1, Thor 385 (this issue is what a comic fight is supposed to be between heroes), hulk 24 and 25 volume 2 (and this is what a comic book fight should be between arch rivals. When you hit someone so hard they lose a body part, I’d say you’re sworn enemies.), spider-man 6,7 and 16 the McFarlane ones, x-force 4, deadpool 4 (how he gets in and out of a hulk fight is amazing), murder mysteries HC edition and the Light Brigade collected edition, thanos quest 1 and 2, infinity gauntlet hc, captain marvel vol. 2 number 2, body bags (the entire series), Mask returns 1-4 and Mask strikes back 1-5 which in my opinion NEVER gets any credit for just how amazing the mask actually is (one of the best heroes ever created I think. The concept and how the mask interacts from person to person is extremely interesting in itself.) I don’t have to even look at my collection or anything to remember these because they just pop up in my brain automatically.

It’s always cool to see people’s favorites that are not a nun bid expensive keys that can inform others about good stories that are affordable to get. I’m not familiar with many of these books, but Avengers 11 I picked up over the summer and it was absolutely epic writing and the art was great. I used to read the Ultimate Spider-Man as well. One of my favorites is The Amazing Spider-Man run by JMS and John Romita Jr . But more specifically issue 32 or 33 (can’t remember) has this amazing part where Peter really thinks their might be chance he will die to Morlun, and so the last thing he does before he think he will die is go tot a pay phone and tells Aunt May how much he loves her. And I think that perfectly shows who he is. It is one of the fist comic books I ever read and the artwork is so good, that’s why I love it!

One book I will ALWAYS KEEP in my collection and have multiple copies of is: Action Comics 775. This is a comic that EVERY FAN OF SUPERHERO COMICS should read. It not only shows how hard Superman sticks to his moral code, but how having so much power weighs on him. It shows how MENTALLY TOUGH Superman is (which most people never think about and an aspect I LOVED about this book) and just why you DO NOT want to get on Superman’s bad side. This is a semi key (first appearance of Manchester Black I believe) but you can get it for under 10 dollars USD. This is THE DEFINITIVE Superman story and it shows just why Superman is THE blueprint and prototype for all superheroes. For anyone who thinks that (whatever hero you believe could place them in this spot) could beat Superman, this comic book shows just why that’s just not gonna happen. This book puts the “Super” in Superman!

When you mentioned the first Kelley Jones Batman issue on the list, I was thinking about how surprised I was you didn’t choose the red rain issue. I guess I should have just been a bit more patient lol. I don’t know if I can make a full list, but I really like Batman issue 6 from the new 52, just because it was a wild experience reading it. Same thing with Batman and Robin 18 from the new 52 (was cool to see an issue completely free of dialogue). If I can throw in run, Kelley jones’ work on deadman, and the Batman year one story line would be on my list.

I believe he said DC was basically taking stories from his trash can or rubbish bin with Blackest Night) , #41-#39 , #37-#33 , #31 (props to you on this. This is one of my favorites) , #30-#27 , #25 , #21-#18 , #16 , #13 , #8-#4 , #2 (This one I'm not a fan of really. I basically never was a fan of taking out Barbara Gordon and how they had to keep upping the ante with Joker. I have this book as I bought a 2nd or 3rd print for a couple bucks to have it. But its one ...ugh.) . I have to hunt down Red Rain eventually. This was a great list and its refreshing to see someone post about books they enjoyed and not speculation , CGC etc. Great job. Also as a bigger DC fan , its nice to see a lot of DC here.

Spectacular Spiderman : The Child Within #178-184. Great story about abused psyches of Vermin and Harry Osborn. Culminates spectacularly in issue #200. Cover to #180 is iconic. 10/10 would reccomend, hehe.

Spectacular Spider Man 200 is such an UNDERRATED BOOK! That’s the culmination of an awesome story and one of the best fights between arch enemies/best friends that you’ll ever see in comics! Speaking of underrated books Batman/Spawn and Spider Man/Batman is in this category.

Enjoy that this list is personal, everyone has different tastes and interests. A lot of these books are in my wheelhouse of 80s books that I read - the medium was maturing as I was.
