Well, that's hardly "demented". It just undeniably IS a parody of alien invasion movies. I think that's what everybody considers it to be. That said, while not bad, it isn't NEARLY as good as the films you compared it too. It's half a Naked Gun at best.

Personally Independence Day was absolutely not for me. All the bluster and ridiculousness. I think there's definitely something to Minty's theory that most of the US audience wanted something big, loud, and macho vs those who enjoyed the satire and intelligence in Mars Attacks!

I like (not love 🤷) it myself, but I doubt anyone failed to understand the satire. It is neither subtle nor smart. Roger Ebert said that the filmmakers appeared to have thought they were too good for the material. That seems about right. It's dumb in a way that feels contemptuous instead of loving.

I was like 10 or 12 years old when my dad took me and my brother to see it in the theater and it left an impression on me forever. At first, I was actually scared by it, but by the time it was on VHS, I became observed by its unusual style. The mere fact that every Hollywood superstar was killed off was revolutionary and that the cgi actually still holds up is mind blowing

My sister was a young kid when she saw it. It terrified her. We made fun of her for it and terrified her more by staring at her and going “Ack, ack, ack”. She watched again years later and could stop laughing. She couldn’t understand why it scared her.

I beg to differ. Converting the explosion from the nuclear missile aimed at the space ship into a bong hit was the best. I mean how, after taking the hit, the Martian laughs “Ack, ack, ack, ack” like teenaged stoner is classic.

I first saw Mars Attacks back in the VHS rental days. When I watched it at home it finally struck me that when I was a kid in the 60's I had just a handful of the trading cards before they were yanked off the market. Wow! I had completely forgotten about them. So to me it's a Fun Sci-Fi farce that I'm glad to have in my own collection and I've watched it again many times..

I also like MA, but it is as flawed as most people think. It LOOKS much better than it "watches". Lots of the humor barely lands and, despite what defenders of the film claim, Jack Nicholson (who I love) doesn't work very well in either role. I don't buy him as a President, and he's trying more than he's succeeding in his other role.

I met one of the special effects artists for this movie at a carshow why back in the day. He had attended Ringling school of the arts in Sarasota Florida (where the carshow was) and he was now teaching there. He had a white/white/black mid ‘90s Saleen Mustang convertible with a speedster cover. It even had matching white wheels. S281sc. I later owned one of those cars in triple black in the early ‘00s.

I love that you point out the TV dinner scene as particularly funny, which I totally agree on! What even lifts it up further for me is that it is very probable that some families found themselves watching the movie while eating their dinners in front of the TV looking dumbfounded into the mirror their TV screen has become for a few seconds and not even realize what just happened 😂

This film came out when I was in college, and after graduation I worked at a job that had HBO on a TV in the lobby pretty much 24/7. Mars attacks was in heavy rotation by then and I caught bits and pieces of it over several months. It was at least a year before I actually sat down and watched it all the way through. Excellent film on several levels, and has aged well compared to some of the other films from the period. Will always be in my top 10 thanks for breaking it down for us!

When this came out when I was a kid. I didn't want to go, but my dad stated that I would most likely love it. He was correct. I cracked up a bunch and still one of my fav "stupid comedy", as my wife puts it, on my list.

American here...I loved this movie from the get go but knew it was not going to work. I found it hilarious and totally got the B movie ethos they were going for but my wife just didn't get it and thought it was dumb and unfortunately my kids were just a tad bit to young and the movie just a bit to violent for me to share it with them. When everyone got older it turned into one of those movies that all us boys never tired of and for many years was our go-to thanksgiving day movie.
