Beautiful - both Mirella Freni and von Karajan. How lucky we are that these performances were recorded and preserved for future generations. Thanks to whoever has posted this video.

When Freni is at her best like here, for me, there is no more beautiful lyric sound. I know this is personal taste, but the balance and color in her voice is just glorious. And she performs this with direct simplicity, the essence of Mimi.

Qué bella voz, impecable interpretación. Mirella Frenni, una de la últimas voces legendarias. Técnica netamente italiana, voz cubierta y a la vez de máscara. Un sonido redondo, fluido y bello. La voz sull fiato, resuena, suspendida. Después de la Callas, una de mis sopranos favoritas. Bravo, maestra Mirella 👏👏👏

Inégalable dans la Bohème ,une voix d'or et de miel ,légende du Met et de la Scala .Admirable dans Butterfly et Adriana Lecouvreur .Étonnante dans Tatiana d'Eugène Onéguine' en russe ! Et inattendue dans la Marguerite du Faust de Gounod .Une très belle artiste ,très émouvante ,une grande musicienne ,une très grande Dame .Merci Mirella

Если бы мне сказали лет 35 назад что Я буду смотреть мастер классы,,,Я бы сказал ему что он сумасшедший,,Но сейчас Я в свои 53 года смотрю все это и просто поражаюсь что опера это Царица,Королева Вселенской музыки!!! Брависимо,великолепно...Видимо это приходит с возрастом!!!! Я очень люблю итальянскую музыку...80х диско,,,но ОПЕРА,,,ЭТО КОСМОС!!!!

E' mancata oggi la "nostra" Mirella! Un giorno triste per gli appassionati di musica lirica. Con estrema commozione sto scrivendo queste poche righe su questa grande cantante modenese,proprio come il suo caro amico Pavarotti che l'ha preceduta da ormai molti anni,nell'Olimpo dei grandi!

Ho il ricordo bellissimo di una Boheme al teatro Carlo Felice a Genova!!! Talmente dolce e commovente che mi sono trovata a piangere senza nemmeno accorgermi. Una recita meravigliosa come solo lei sapeva rendere Mimi. Grazie infinite per quanto ci ha dato questa grande interprete!!!

A native New Yorker, I have lived in Milan for the past thirty-eight years; and Mirella Freni had a lot to do with my decision to come here. Her performances, back in the Sixties, at the Met (and in Philadelphia, and in Cleveland, and in Salzburg, and in Paris, and in all the places I went to in order to see and hear her) played a role (although they were not, of course, the only factor) in my determination that Italy was a land of marvels, where I absolutely needed to live. I remember reading somewhere the adage that "people had better be careful about what they wish for in their youth, because they are likely to get it." Well, I'm seventy years old now, and I have gotten out of life much of what I yearned for in my youth. And guess what: "Je ne regrette rien."

David was the love of opera that made you to live in Italy? I am older than you and as a very young men I lived in Genova and I can understand your feeling.I used to go to the Carlo Felice in Genova and of course at the Scala. The first time that I went to the opera, I was so much impressed that I had to hide my tears. Un'opera non è solamente musica ;le parole ne fanno una poesia che rispecchia la sublimità. No rien de rien no, moi aussi je ne regrette rien.

Mirella Freni was magnificent but equally noteworthy is the orchestra, which accompanied her perfectly, with just the perfect level of dynamics, which caressed Mirella Freni's singing - allowing her to express the vulnerability and innocence of Mimi's character. Brava!

I completely agree. This is why Karajan was known as a "singer's conductor". Some conductors treat the singers like instruments, either too fast, too slow, making the orchestra too loud and overpowering the singers, etc. Not Karajan, he always knew how to elicit great vocals.

Herbert von Karajan won’t take his eyes off her. That’s proper accompaniment and it’s why he’s one of the greatest conductors in history. He understood that singers were one of the musicians playing before him, but they just happened to be behind him.
