I heard and met her at the Met in 1993. I was stunned at how much larger her voice was in person and sooooo powerful yet beautiful and then I met her in her dressing room and thought how does that voice come out of such a tiny woman? Performance of my life!

I am so lucky to have been able to see Mirella Freni at the Metropolitan Opera several times and to go backstage and talk with her many times. One of the greatest sopranos to grace the stage. RIP. I was so sad to hear of her passing.

Although she never sang the role of Tosca on the stage, Freni certainly knows how to spin a beautiful Puccini line. It's a relief to hear her after listening to other famous sopranos.

Arguably, THE best. I find it hard to fault her in anything she sings. Just amazing.

@@stillstanding6031 The problem with this interpretation is the VOCAL DEPTH itself. No matter how perfect she is or tries to sing this note by note - Freni simply does NOT have the depth as she is a light lyric soprano and this requires a true dramatic voice such as Callas, or Nilsson, or Dame Eva Turner. Tosca requires vocal DEPTH!

A true lyrico-spinto soprano, virtually extinct now. I’m full of sadness and nostalgia with the news of her departing this World. Fortunately Mirella left us a wonderful recorded legacy. For example, IMO her Mimi in the Karajan recording of La Boheme is the most musical and beautifully executed performance on record.

E' mancata oggi la "nostra" Mirella! Un giorno triste per gli appassionati di musica lirica. Con estrema commozione sto scrivendo queste poche righe su questa grande cantante modenese,proprio come il suo caro amico Pavarotti che l'ha preceduta da ormai molti anni,nell'Olimpo dei grandi!

Puccini was her composer .She sang his music with such beauty and emotion and purity, she embodied all the femininity and vulnerability and inner strength that the Puccini Heroines demand! God that voice was ethereal !
