Lovely familial sound of the Mirless ticking over. I noticed the valve springs seem to be housed within the cyl. head. The mirless I worked on the springs were open and the valve stems carboned up when doing a lot of slow running. We had a special tool for bouncing the springs prior to starting in order to flake off the carbon and ensure the valves closed promptly.

This is a KSS type, the one you worked on will have been a K Major, they were the next step up from these. Now if it was a large vessel, theirs a chance it could have been a Monarch Model, but these were a huge engine.

The famous KSS Mirrlees , it was the forerunner to the K Major, they were the donkey of the manufacture, they just keep going, ive rebuilt a few in my time along with the K majors. They really are bomb proof.

Im not involved but do work on the River Thames so follow the history of these old sun tugs. There is only 1 left on the Thames itself and very few in the world, a couple in greece etc. Great to see these still running and earning a living

Thanks for the information. Were you involved with any of the Saga tugs?? If I find out anything about Saga Moon I will let you know... I'm happy that you found the photos I put on my forum. I love these old tugs!

Great video (and photos on the forum) of this ex SUN tug. Great to see she is still going. Sadly SAGA STAR i believe caught fire last year or in 2011 and was scrapped. SAGA MOON i believe is also still operating locally to SAGA SUN?

What would be the fuel consumption on this at 460 rpm?
