There's all sorts of supernatural beings with varying levels of importance and divisiveness ranging from epic hero with a god somewhere in their ancestry and the local nature spirit to the titans and Olympians who literally shape the world. Amaterasu is Olympic tier.

Most people don't learn the full original context of the story. If you read Japanese notes on the Kojiki, they explain that Amaterasu was goaded from her cave because the gods were telling her that they found a new sun goddess and they were celebrating. Then they used the mirror to think there was another sun goddess other than herself. It's also explained that all the weird things Uzume did to draw Amaterasu out of the cave were meant to symbolize a ritual that people performed during eclipses.

This is similar to a khasi folktale I learnt few years ago. When the world was innocent, there was a dancefloor for the animals to dance on in the morning/noon. The sun and moon wanted to join them but were too busy doing their duty. {Ka sngi (sun) and U bnai (moon) were sister and brother.} One night, the sun and moon danced on the dancefloor. When the animals saw them, they laughed and made fun of them. The sun was so embarrassed, that she ran off and hid in a cavern. Then, there was total darkness. The animals were frightened. Then an owl said to them 'would anyone like to volunteer? We need the sun!' many tried to volunteer but couldn't. One of the was a peacock. When it was The peacock's turn, he went to the cavern and tried to seduce the sun to get out of the cavern. The sun was so horrified by the peacock's behaviour, she chased him out of the cave. The last one to volunteer was a rooster. When the rooster went to the cavern, he mad a deal with the sun that when he crows 3 times, she will have to come out of the cave and bring light again. The sun agreed to it When the rooster came out of the cavern, he crowed 3 times and the sun came out of the cavern. The animals were overjoyed and that's why the sun comes up when the rooster crows thrice. This is the legend of the sun and the rooster. In my book, it's called 'krem lamet Krem latang'.

well the more complicated explanation of what occurred is that the terms of the competition was that each would create gods from a single item from the other. amatarasu created 3 gods from susanoo's sword and susanoo created 5 gods from amatarasu's necklace (which i think was given to her by izanagi when he created her or it may have been from another god)

It was originally called Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi (天叢雲剣, "Heavenly Sword of Gathering Clouds"), but its name was later changed to the more popular Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi ("Grass-Cutting Sword"). Also, Susanoo did not work on or create the sword. He found it inside the Yamata-no-Orochi after slaying it.

I also suspect it was named grass cutter ironically given that it’s powerful wind bending ability was discovered when the owner attempted to use it to cut grass and instead summoned a burst of wind. It’s like naming a weapon can opener because you discovered it’s destructive ability during target practice with soda cans.

As the dress fell off, the other gods started laughing and joined her; Amaterasu was confused to what was making them laugh, and she emerged. The moment she emerged, she was captured so the gods could seal the cave. It was the sight of herself that distracted her because she'd never seen what she looked like. The typical story shows that she hid because she was frightened of her brother and the rejoicement of the gods ebbed her fear, not a "I-Have-A-Girl-Crush" or "narcissism" nonsense thing.
