The urn could be symbolic for humanity. Pandora opening the urn and letting out the enumerated evils upon the world would then represent how most of the causes of human suffering are self-inflicted by vices like greed, wrath, pride, et al., and lust (connection to Pandora, the first female human, opening the urn). In other words our internal vices cause misery for those external to us. Hope staying in the jar would represent how hope is the one characteristic of all of humanity that doesn't primarily affect those around us. I've never heard anyone use this explanation, but it sounds like a plausible theory to me.

I heard a different version where the box contained *good* stuff, all the gifts from the gods, and when she opened it they escaped and humanity was left with nothing but Hope that still remained in the box.

There were two kinds of "hopes" in ancient Greece, and though there was no consensus on which one it was, it could also have been the bad kind of hope, the one where a person foolishly hopes for things to go their way when all evidence points otherwise. A deception they cast upon themselves.

Perhaps Hope stayed in the jar because - unlike all the evils which tend to actively hunt us down - Hope can only be acquired through seeking it out yourself. This goddess, named Elpis, is the Protogenos of Hope. Now, what is a Protogenos? The Protogenoi were basically the predecessors of the Titans, and they were also the primordial embodiments of various aspects of existence; e.g. Gaea was the earth, Uranos/Ouranos was the sky (& also the king of the Protogenoi who Kronos overthrew), Oceanus was the seas, Tartarus was the deepest, darkest, most unpleasant parts of Hades's domain (AKA the prison of the Titans and the Ancient Greek version of Hell), Thanatos was death and Elpis was hope. Also sometimes included in their ranks is the primordial Chaos from which all of existence emerged from.

Personally,I think it's a kind of metaphor. Men are the box and Pandora releasing all the evils is a sort of nod to some people or things bringing out the worst in us. But,since Hope is often the last to die,it means it stays where it is. At least,it's what I think.

So they are in a sense, less intelligent, their IQ has decreased and they can't perform the same complex activities they could when they were young, but they still have wisdom.

KG Motte Okay, so according to Wikipedia, Hesiod didn't explicitly say what Hope staying in the jar was meant to symbolize, so it's open to interpretation. That said, I'm pretty sure from context that Hope is supposed to be a positive quality, and that it staying in the jar is SUPPOSED to represent that it belongs to mankind. Thinking on it, I guess one interpretation could be that Hope being contained in the jar makes it something that mankind can control; thus while death, disease, etc. happen to you whether you like it or not, hope is something you have to choose. EDIT: Apparently, there is some lost-in-translation nonsense with the word hope, so my interpretation may be way off.

Carlo Mazzeranghi In your mind, what kind of stories would you get from analyzing (this version of) Pandora that you wouldn't get from looking at similar characters? Despite the extravagance of her creation, she strikes me as very straight forward; she was created to bring evil/ misery into the world and enjoys doing so. She's more or less Maleficent, but beautiful and without magic powers. Don't get me wrong, I like Maleficent; characters with simple, pure motivations are appealing to me: Lord Dominator from Wander over Yonder, Saitama from One Punch Man, and most iterations of The Joker are also examples of this. Even by modern sensibilities I'd hesitate to say Pandora's a tragic character or even a victim, let alone the major victim. She's literally the only human who suffer inn this story. As a followup, there's nothing inherently wrong with a character fulfilling the ends for which they were ordained, so long as the relationship isn't abusive and person enjoys the role they've been given. Take the appliances from the Brave Little Toaster; on one hand all man-made machines must hide that are fully sentient and exist as solely as *tools* to be used by man. On the other hand, all machines (even *evil* ones) love humanity for unknowingly giving them life and genuinely find joy and fulfillment in doing what they were created for.

Poor Hephaestus. Yeah, Ancient Greeks took a huge deal with it comes to beauty to a ridiculous standards, to the point there's a saying *Kaloi k'agathoi* ("the Beautiful and the Good"). Phryne is a good historical example of this. She was a courtesan who's put on trial for committing blasphemy against Aphrodite, but she defend herself by citing her beauty basically saying "why would you condemn me to death if the gods gave me this beauty", and then the judges let her off free.

I always thought this story was super hilarious... I mean, I'm sure it's based in a lot of bad practices with women in greek city states and such... But it is pretty amusing. Even if I don't agree with what it implies about women. I think the over exaggerated implication is kind of funny, when you really look at what Greeks seriously thought.

Are we just going to overlook heroes like Theseus and Odysseus? Paragons who were paragons because they had brains and brawn? It works both ways.

Not so much. Yes, he was quick to point out their cunning, but the big point was what they were capable of and what they were willing to do with that capability. It doesn't end with her being cunning, but with her and women in general acting like your greatest ally and support when things are good then abandoning or betraying you when you're no longer convenient. It wasn't that women had the capacity to think for themselves, it was that they were liars and manipulators who took advantage of their abilities to screw over the men in their lives. I'm guessing he'd fallen for some very bad women, maybe gold diggers who declared their undying love until they were able to get the attention of someone richer.

Earlier story than that even, Pandora is the all giving mother goddess. She is represented on vases being hammered up from the earth. So yes her gifts were good, bad, everything. Hesiod is just a misogynist.
