Dasha, what is wild about this is that years after King wrote this, something a little like it really happened to him. He was walking alongside a road when a truck hit him and he was hospitalized for a long time -- and the staff was told "Please don't make any 'Misery' jokes, no 'I'm your number one fan' or any of that."

You were actually right, the word FAN is a shortening of the word fanatic. It has softened from the meaning of the root word, but this movie made the phrase, "I'm your #1 fan!" kinda scary. In the book during the hobbling scene, she didn't use a hammer, she used an axe.

Paul trying to switch from Misery to a different type of novel, like he did with the book Annie burned, mirrors something Stephen King experienced. He had written horror books for a while and suddenly switched to fantasy and wrote a story called "Eyes of the Dragon" that his horror fans HATED. The negative feedback he got on that with terms like "just stick to horror like we love!" were part of the inspiration for some of Misery. So yes, good call by Dasha, this movie/novel are 100% a commentary by Stephen King on his own fans. Well, some of them. :D

Dasha, great reaction, exactly my own reaction when I watched this movie for the first time! Annie Wilkes would probably be called a psychopath in the American psychology classification. A few years ago, on the Hulu platform, they did a Stephen King endorsed series called "Castle Rock". It ran for two seasons. The second season focused on a young Annie Wilkes. The actress they chose did a terrifyingly great job portraying her. If you can find it, you should watch it. If you want, of course.

So, here's something about the book: In the original novel, Annie Wilkes doesn't break his ankles. She chops off his foot with an ax, and cauterizes the wound with a blowtorch. That scene was a big reason why screenwriter William Goldman wanted to write the movie - and when they changed the scene, he was *mad*. Eventually, however, he realized that they were right to do so - that (to paraphrase) "if they'd done what I wanted, it would have been too much," that the audience would have hated Annie "and, in time, hated us."

Dom Perignon used to be under Moet & Chandon; the label on the champagne bottle reflected that. Both are now owned by LVMH. Strike anywhere matches used to be more common, but a number of manufacturers stopped making them for safety reasons (fire and chemical). Fan is short for fanatic. Annie Wilkes definitely took it to a fanatic level. Maybe a bit beyond that. Kathy Bates truly earned the Oscar for her performance in Misery.

He plays a gentlemanly stagecoach robber who, after 33 years in prison, finds that the world has changed (stagecoaches are a thing of the past), so he decides to becomes a train robber in Canada. Years before this movie came out I read the book and believe me the book is much more gruesome. He's called the KING of horror for a reason........On a side note, I've been watching your (Dasha) channel for awhile now and I can't help but notice how much your English has improved. Far better than my Spanish! :)
