These aren't bad AKs, but they are ones we feel that are over-hyped to legendary status in today's market. This is just for fun and to some extent was done a bit tongue in cheek. So when your favorite shows up,well don't take it personally. Just know you have an overrated AK! hehehe

I've had that in reverse though, I had my SG550 for sale in GunList and some dealer called me up and tried to BS me into trading it on four MAK-90s which at the time you could get for around $300. I was like, dream on. "Oh but they're worth $1,000". Okay, sell them for $4,000 and get back to me when you have the cash. Surprisingly, I never heard from him again.

Absolutely, all these people who spend all this time and money getting "milspec" - which means made by the lowest bidder. The current best example being the P320 which is massively overrated. Also, what the military uses their guns for is not what we use our guns for.

Of all the hobbies I've been involved in, the gun hobby has easily been by far the most filled with misinformation and general total idiocy, over any other hobby/interest I'm well aware of. I've found that it's a very lonely hobby because of this, you just learn to dislike fellow gun owners after long enough...that is if you aren't one of the morons who never did any research of their own on their own guns, having just a surface level superficial interest. I think guns are too serious an item for people who aren't fairly serious about them. If it ain't obvious, I could go all day.

Start by getting a kit on gunbroker someone undersell by bad keyword use (eg misspelling izhmash for example) then build your own. The initial investment is high in tools though. I have several kits bought in the last 6 months for $400-600 mostly wasr10, romy g but also a polish 556 and a 1968 russian in there also ($750). You have to pay private sellers with money order but I have never been conned yet in 10 years of buying guns in USA.

If you recognize the market is small and prices high right now, why get into the AK game at all? At least, why right now? Back when kits were $100-$200? sure gamble with a build and make it a fun learning experience, but checkout the prices on kits these days. Even 'cheap' ones really aren't worth risking fucking up doing one's first build attempt. They were trying to sell me hunting rifles. I cleaned them out of all their cz's and some glocks, pmr30 and a sub 2000, all at the 'old' prices. I got a new 308 saiga for $999 recently on a gunbroker auction, the seller was very annoyed with me but he completed the deal. There are deals out there. Ammo is crazy but there are still gun deals.

Hi Misha. Thank you for sharing your expertise! What do you think of the new Arsenal SLR107R-11E that is assembled in Nevada? How does the quality compare with a SAM-7R made in Bulgaria? I dont think they have been assembling AK's in Nevada for very long, and with most mechanical things it takes a while to work out all quality problems. With ammo so high now, its not like we can shoot 200-500 rounds ourselves to "prove" a new gun's reliability.

I remember, back in the nineties, when I used to live in Cuba, how the Chinese Aks had a bad reputation. The biggest issue was how easy they rusted out, compared to the European counterparts. They also broke more often than not, I guess the metallurgy was not up to par. I found it interesting that, once in the USA, people would talk highly of them. They definitely upped the quality for US sales, compared to the “military grade”, select fire versions they sold to other countries.

Hey Misha, I'm one of the ones who has suffered a broken 7.62x39mm Valmet firing pin. I have tried probably a dozen different types but have not yet found any other type of AK firing pin which is a drop-in fit. I spoke with a M92/S (semi auto Rk95) owner in Finland who also ran into a broken pin after a low round count. He was able to send his bolt back to the SAKO factory where they re-profiled it for a new improved pin. I need to go through the rigamarole of trying to obtain overseas customer support, but I was lucky enough to find one original spare pin in the meantime. Spare pins are totally out of stock everywhere (even in Finland) except when an old-timer lists his "uknown Valmet pin" on GunBroker. Valmets are fun to own, to put it mildly!

I remember when the first Maadi AKM's was advertised in Shotgun news. They were asking $1200 for them back then. Some people purchased them, since they were the first AK copy that was introduced.Few purchased them since ammunition was rare and very expensive. The Valmet was too different looking from the soviet AK.The Chinese AK's were great AK's and sold well because they also imported cheap ammunition with their rifles. The cheapest AK's I saw were $250 dealer price. The wood is Teak wood. The Polytech Legend series were much better made than the Norinco rifles and the price reflected it. Try to find Peter G. Kokalis reviews of them in Soldier of Fourtune magazine. The Legend variant had better made triggers and parts. We have come far since then.

I put many thousands of rounds through that rifle with never a problem. I will say this, the furniture was miss-matched poorly stained than looked like some form of plywood! Thanks; a very enjoyable discussion. I was glad (I think) that the WASR 10 didn't make the list... This video is why I'm completely happy with my WASR. I did not want a 'premium' AK like RD or Krebs (good on those who do!), but a simple, relatively crude rifle such as Pvt Ivanovski would have been issued. THAT, to me, is the spirit of the AK. As for Chinese prices: Back in the early '90s, I worked for a wholesaler and shipped Chinese AKs for $180, Chinese SKS' for $80. The current prices are breathtaking...

The reason Wasr10's didn't make the list is they can be bought for $800 brand new, So it's kinda hard to overpay when a rifle is only $800 on the new market today and $650 on used market/In mint condition or unfired

I was wondering if the Valmet would be on the list, and I wasn't disappointed! Mine was number 914518, manufactured in 1991. It's a gun with the primary purpose of being easy to manufacture and service, so that buttloads of them could be churned out during a war. I don't know why people think it's a diamond or something. It's just a Kalashnikov with slightly tighter tolerances, thanks to the higher standards of Finnish manufacturing.

Ofc Misha picks some of my favorite variants, the SGLs, the Maadis, the Hungarians, and the Chinese AKs. I’ve always liked the Maadi’s for being a licensed copy of the AKM that is almost identical to the original rifle, the Chinese for having the bayonets and being unique, and the Hungarians just for being a standard AKM, with the fact they were the 3 AK’s available in the ‘80s because I’m a hardcore ‘80s nerd and I don’t count the Valmet because I don’t really care for them for being basically nearly their own platform and not being AKM’s. I get that the Saiga’s kind of cheap out, though just having a Russian AK seems cool and it’s people like me who are the reason why they are so expensive. Though I still like Romanian AK’s a lot and they are cheap and easy to find. Nowadays I think the Serbian M70 ZPAP rifle is the most over rated AK and people freak out about them just because they are affordable and have a bulged trunnion which basically isn’t necessary on a Semi Auto rifle, though it’s nice they make them like that because that’s how the military models are. Though I still prefer an AKM that is compatible with Soviet parts. Great video as always Misha.

I had a MISR (which I suspect was a MISR-10) and it was worse than an IO AK, Pioneer Arms, or Century. The rivets of the front trunion were so off that the barrel was crooked enough that the bolt would not go into battery and would hang up on the top of the chamber of the barrel. I had to lift up the charging handle with force to get it up and over so it could close. And it had the worst trigger slap out of any AK I've ever had the displeasure to use, 10x worse than even the terrible trigger on my SAR-1. Ever since, Egyptian AK's are the only ones I will only buy if I am able to inspect them in person. It was the biggest piece of shit gun I've ever held, and it made I.O.'s look good.

@@lioncelica5170 I know that the MISR-90’s were some junk that Century Arms made where they took a bunch of spare Egyptian and Chinese parts and made quite the abomination of a rifle. One had dark red furniture (total POS, it malfunction on me and dumped the entire mag full auto- talked about puckering up) the other had plastic black furniture. I never was a big fan. Even in the early 90s those mags were hard to find and ran $60-80 each. I sold them off and went to a Magnum Research Galil ARM. I always loved Galil's. I am surprised they didn't make the list. I have probably owned around 20 Galil's previously. I had a Poly Tech Legend and I truly loved it. What a fun gun!!! If i remember correctly it was around $400 in '86. Now it's a perfect center zero lol. Gun has ran 3000 + with no issues. I did have to sand and fit the wood but over all its beautiful and runs perfectly. More accurate than the WASR to 200 yards, dont have a place here that goes further than 200. I did the AK Operators Union 25 yard Zero and it did the trick. My Romanian Bayonet fits perfectly, my Cleaning Kit and Rod of course go into place fine. The GF3 in my opinion is a better fit n finish and as reliable as the WASR ever was. Misha, dude its so good to see your videos again! Sold my Arsenal for $1,000 a few years ago. Barrel smoked and bubbled from the paint, and the sights were off as they weren't put on straight. Fun to shoot! I miss that AK. Thanks Misha!

I bought a SAR1 Romanian in the 90's . Ive fired thousands of rounds thru it and it has never had a jam or failure to fire. Still they seem to be looked down on and Ive been looking to upgrade. I got a MAK-90 and was surprised that my SAR1 was more accurate and had a better trigger. I went after a Hungarian SA85M but it was so expensive I let it go. Im starting to think that I'll just shoot my SAR1 and maybe hold out for a milled AK if they ever come down to reasonable prices. Thanks for cutting through the hype and for your knowledge.

I just want inexpensive AKs that aren't hot garbage but stamping machinery is very expensive. Has anyone tried making AKs using aluminum forgings?

AK’s action is too violent to use aluminum, it will deform.

@@R.Tafolla maybe steel inserts, but that'd probably just move the stress somewhere else. I guess that's why aluminum roller-lock guns aren't a thing too.

@@servicerifle16 Oh...in the '90s they definitely tried aluminium alloy rollerlocks....it didn't workout so hot.

James River built some very nice kits on Maadi parts. While not an import, they did a really nice job and the finish is great.

Maybe I just got a bad 1, but my Maadi was a really poor example of an AK platform. Bought mine new in or around 1999 for approximately $450.00. It was basically a parts gun sold by an importer like Century or something similar. It had American trigger, hammer, piston, and pistol grip. The inside of the gun was oily and had quite a bit of sand in it. The wood, if you could call it that appeared to be carved out with a dull knife by poor carver. The hammer was cast and the parting line down the middle was so high that I had to file it down so it would actually function. It was relatively accurate at 100 yards. With its favorite ammo it would group 3 shots in 4''. However, most ammo would group into 6'' or so at 100 yards. I'd advise anyone looking for an AK platform to look at something other than a Maadi made in the late 90's or beyond approximately that time frame. I was happy to be rid of mine a couple years later for a decent profit. I've had several AK platform guns and the Maadi and the Norinco milled receiver MAC 90 were the worse of the breed. The Norinco was beautiful in every way except accuracy. Regardless of the ammo chosen it would not keep its shots on a 5 gallon bucket at 50 yards. It must have had an oversized bore. My stamped receiver MAC 90 is very accurate. It will shoot anything and most ammo really well. I've shot many groups well under 3'' at 100 yards with iron sites. Have you noticed that what ever is the cheapest variant at any given time is said to be "Junk" but once that variant is banned it somehow becomes very desirable and the quality improves 100%. People are strange when it comes to this subject
