The desert may be one of the last places on Earth you'd expect to find a beauty pageant. But on Christmas Day, while you were busy testing the limits of your digestive system, VICE's Charlet Duboc was traipsing through sand dunes in Abu Dhabi's remote Western Region, all in the name of beauty.
In the West, we think nothing of beauty contests for dogs, horses, flowers, even women. But the leggy, doe-eyed lovelies on parade here are of the four-legged variety, and are judged on such criteria as having a nice firm pair of ears and floppy lips. Just like supermodels, at the height of their careers camels can command millions of dollars. Who knew?
While the super-car or the SUV has replaced the camel as the most popular means of transportation in the modern Emirates, the animal retains an important place in the nation's heart. "Beautiful camel" may strike you as something of an oxymoron. But many a bedouin or sheikh will think nothing of dropping up to $3 million dollars on a so-called prized beauty, in the hope that she'll bring home the coveted Bayraq-the fairest camel in the land. In this episode of The VICE Guide to Travel, Charlet finds herself the only woman in the desert, looking for the elusive beauty in the beast.

The Elephant of Doom Except horses are beautiful and elegant. These dark camels are really ugly. The natural colored ones had some nice examples of camels, though.

To all of the people hating on the fact that they spend so much money on the camels and not on helping struggling humans, do some research. I have lived in the U.A.E for almost 15 years and I can tell you that they are the kindest, most generous people you will ever meet. 100's of millions of dollars if not billions are spent to help those who are less fortunate in and out of the U.A.E. They are always one of the first countries to send aid to struggling regions all over the world after they had been struck by a natural disaster or another atrocity of some kind. Many of those people will donate and share their wealth without making announcements about it, their not helping to impress anyone or the haters on the internet its between them and themselves. Get familiar before you talk. Peace.

During the month of Ramadhan the banking sector must experience strokes from all the charity payment that pass through through out the Muslim world. Literally the biggest charity event in the world worth billions of Dirhams/Euros/Dollars. I'm used to looking at horses and judging their features. But camels? I have no clue. They all look the same to me. I can tell a dromedary from a Bactrian and this guy's camels seem sleeker and darker colored than the Australian ones. That's about all I know. Oh, and that all camels are adorable.
