I remember watching this live with my family in 1989, while my dad also recorded it on VHS! 6 weeks later we saw it at the theatre! This is one of the best not just musicals but mega-musicals of the 1980's + one of the best period!

I don't detect any arrogance with these 2, even during the auditions. they have made history

@@Marinabalagot2010 They are both English speaking Frenchmen. Composer/co Librettist Claude Michel Shonberg(the one on the left) was born in Vannes, France, and Lyricist/co Librettist(The one on the right) is also from France though he was born in Tunisia to a Sephardic Jewish family. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claude-Michel_Sch%C3%B6nberg en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alain_Boublil

Lea Salonga voice and beauty made Miss Saigon a huge hit. The rest of the cast was also very good.

Not really. The people behind it made it popular.

they wrote Martin Guerre and The Pirate Queen... both did not make it as good as the previous ones... :(

And then they wrote "Margurite", with Michel Legrand (Amour, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Young Girls of Rochefort) composing instead of Schonberg(Who just worked with Boublil on the libretto, like with their other shows).

Martin Guerre was still a hit and made its budget back within 8 months so who cares!

It's funny the french have never warmed up to the musical theatre
